type of questions in dualingo English test and we're going to practice how you can share a personal experience because that's a great way to answer these questions and this video is part of our series all about practicing the different question types in dualingo English test so make sure you check that out if you want more practice now of course the det is not going to ask you very personal questions like which teacher you had a crush on at school the less said about that the better anyway what they really want to see is how well
you can explain something personal to you that could be describing a place that you've been or an experience that you've had and the key thing is that you talk about this topic in a conversational way but you still bring in varied and advanced vocabulary now here on this channel we always like you to get involved not just watching the videos but being part of the videos and we're going to do that today as well so what we're going to do I will show you a question on the screen I'll give you time to answer it
you're going to to actually get your phone speak into it record and answer that question then I'll show you an example answer that I've made and finally you're going to listen back and I'll show you how to improve your answer so that you can keep getting better and better scores so before I give you this first question make sure you've got a phone or a tablet something to record your voice because you're going to be speaking now in a second we're going to get started I'll show you the question on the screen this is read
and respond right so you have 90 seconds to read it and to give your answer and remember when you're answering variety is very important don't use the same words and same phrases again and again try to use different words and phrases in that 90 seconds and something useful to include is Reflections so Reflections is when you talk about how you feel about something maybe how this experience changed you as a person you're not just describing what happened you're giving something deeper more interesting so with all of that in mind let's begin the first question so
I'm going to show it for you on screen your time starts now [Music] [Music] okay so how did that feel how did you do hopefully you've recorded your answer save that we're going to look at that in a few minutes but now let me give you my answer hm a memorable Journey well for me that immediately brings to mind a backpacking trip I took when I was younger and always wanted to explore Vietnam and when I finally saved enough money to make it happen I booked the first flight I could if I'm honest I was
a bit nervous about traveling alone and there were definitely some unexpected challenges along the way miscommunication about train tickets the occasional bout of food poisoning those kinds of things but these were outweighed by the incredibly positive experiences I saw the stunning beauty of ancient temples the vibrant chaotic markets and most of all the genuine kindness of the people I met wherever I went I struck up conversations with locals some spoke little English While others especially the travelers from around the world like me spoke English fluently these connections even if shortlived felt incredibly meaningful that trip
really pushed me out of my comfort zone and I learned a lot about myself I was surprised by how capable I was of navigating new places and situations on my own I still think that that Journey helped shape who I am today it gave me the love of travel that I still carry with me so there we go that one is my answer and let's think about why this is a good answer so there's a few reasons first of all it's something personal I'm telling a real story about me so it's going to be uh
something relatable and it sounds conversational it's the sort of story you could tell to your friends it was also reflective so in the last part I was talking about how my trip to Vietnam gave me this love of traveling so I'm talking about how the experience has changed me as a person and I also included some interesting very natural vocabulary so things like vibrant chaotic struck up conversations that means start conversations but I used them in a very natural and a correct way in the grammar so that everything fit together very nicely okay so that
was the first question let's do one more practice question again I'm going to show you the question on the screen you'll have 90 seconds to read and respond let's begin [Music] [Music] all right very good so how was question two how did you feel let's take a look at my answer now so you can see it on screen let's read through ah yes one moment that comes to mind is the time when I assisted a fellow passenger in a train station it was a few years ago not long after I first moved to Manchester actually
I was on my way home after work when I spotted an older woman struggling with some heavy bags she looked quite frail and I could see she was having a hard time getting the bags up the escalator as I approached offering to help carry the bags she lost her balance luckily because I was so close I was able to catch her stopping her from having a potentially nasty accident I reassured her that I would help her taking her bags as she lent gratefully against the side of the escalator later until we reached the top she
was so relieved and she thanked me several times as I walked with her to a nearby bench I sat chatting with her for a while which was lovely she told me all about her children and grandchildren and I told her about my experiences trying to make new friends in a strange city we then left the station together where I helped her put her bags in a taxi while it was just a small act of kindness it felt important to us both she kept thanking me with a genuine War warm smile that warmed my heart it
left me with a feeling of connection like I was finding my place in Manchester so there we go that one is my answer so why is this one strong why is this a good answer so again it's very specific it gives the specific details of where I was who was there and exactly what happened so that part's very good it also again is reflective it talks about my feeling of like finding a connection to the city that I was living in and again I also included some higher level vocabulary words like frail genuine and also
very specific words like escalator those are the kinds of words that can help you to improve your vocabulary score okay so now we have got our two answers I hope you recorded them and we've got an idea of what a good answer could be and what kind of things we should include in our answer so now we're going to go through our recordings we're going to listen to them so I want you to make sure you've got maybe a pen and paper or you're making notes and the first time I want you to listen all
the way through it might be a little bit uncomfortable because nobody likes to listen to their own voice particularly speaking a different language I if I listen to myself speaking Spanish I feel like oh no oh it's awful but it's important to do and the first time just listen through don't take any notes just listen and make a mental note of anything that maybe is good anything that you think oh that was a mistake do that now okay so hopefully you just paused the video and had a listen to your recording now we're going to
listen again hopefully this time you you're a little bit more comfortable listening to your voice it doesn't sound so strange like the first time and this time we're going to listen for some specific details and as you're listening I want you to find three areas that you can improve and these areas could be things like your vocabulary have you included lots of high level vocabulary your grammar do you make any grammar mistakes are all of your sentences the same or are some of them different with variety your pronunciation how accurately do you say the words
do you say any words wrong and your fluency so are there any parts where you can't find the right word okay so listen again and see if you can find three details that you can improve okay so hopefully you've paused the video again and had a listen and here's an example of something imagine you were trying to say the word miscommunication okay when people communicate badly but you you said it wrong you said miscommunication so if you did something like that you should be able to hear the difference when you listen back maybe you don't
notice it when you're speaking but but when you listen back you do notice it and you can practice this several times miscommunication and then make a sentence there was a lot of miscommunication at the office that day and if you're not sure about certain words if you think maybe that word's pronounced correctly or maybe it's wrong there's a great website down here under the video and that's going to tell you uh how exactly to pronounce every different word so any words you're not sure just type it into that website then the next step when you
know exactly how to pronounce that word is listen again to the sentence with that problem like the sentence with miscommunication and say that whole sentence again several times record yourself listen to that and then by doing this you're going to use that word correctly pronounced in exactly the right way way so that when you take your real dualingo English test you won't make that mistake and that could be true as well for a grammar mistake if you notice you've made a grammar mistake or if you uh have a sentence that's very very simple and you
think ooh I could put in a piece of high level vocabulary you can practice the same thing so that when you get to the real test everything comes out much better all right so there we go that is our practice of the read and re respond type of questions giving personal experiences and stories I really hope this was useful make sure to like And subscribe if you enjoyed this video if you're preparing for the det and you want to be totally ready we have a free dualingo English test guide it's available in the link under
