into theaters going all the way back to the early 9s in the infamous Beetle Juice goes Hawaiian must we go Tropical this iteration of the sequel alone has been in development for over 10 years in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Lydia DEET returns to Winter River Connecticut with her stepmother deia played once again by the great Katherine O'Hara as well as her daughter astd played with big Wednesday energy by Jenna Ortega to mourn a death in the family of an actor it probably is best wasn't invited back for this film Lydia who's now a TV Ghost Hunter is
also accompanied by her producer and boyfriend Rory played by Justin throw before long the Paranormal hinkes begin and Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice returns to reunite with his lost love Lydia we also get to meet several other afterlife inhabitants including a dead actor turn cop played by William defo and beetlejuice's former bride dlore s looking to settle unfinished business and played by Monica beluchi it's actually not much of a surprise that this movie is the end product of years and years worth of development because Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actually feels like two different sequels that are kind of mashed
together one of them is an afterlife set sequel that's about Beetlejuice on the run from his ex-wife in his past the other one is a real world set sequel about the detas being menaced by ghosts once again we get the full setup for both of these movies but we don't really get the full payoff for either of them leading to some conflicts that are resolved quickly and unsatisfactorily and also leading to the idea that Tim Burton was kind of planning to just throw everything against the wall and see what sticks what saves Beetlejuice squared is
its cast who are uniformly excellent and bring the energy of the first film as well as a lot of the laughs of The Supporting Cast I found Justin throw to bring the same kind of oblivious yepy energy that made characters like oo work so well in the first movie movie and I loved William defoe's Undead cop who enjoys Hamming it up and playing the part of a hardboiled detective I caught a trace of Charlton hon parody in his performance Jenna Ortega steps in well to its's essentially wona writer's role in the original and Katherine O'Hara
continues to be one of the funniest actors working today if anything wona Ryder's the actor who really isn't given a whole lot to do at one point deia tells Lydia that she needs to find the disaffected teen that she used to be and I agree Lydia is mainly in the movie to gawk at things run after her daughter and reacts to whatever the ghosts are doing and I really wish the movie had more to do for her character of course as with the first movie Michael Keaton is the MVP as Beetle Juice it's the part
I can't imagine anyone else playing and he obviously loves the ability to do literally anything he wants in the role Beetlejuice is kind of like Deadpool or I guess Deadpool is kind of like Beetle Juice in his ability to say anything break any rule make any reference and be as self-aware as he wants I'd honestly watch Michael Keaton play this role once a year every year and probably never get tired of it and that's good because there is a lot of Beetle Juice in this movie way more than in the first film and if Michael
Keaton had been phoning it in or had lost its touch then it would get old really quickly but his commitment is what saves it and really the commitment from the entire cast is what saves the movie it's hard to keep the movie on track in the face of a very disjointed plot poor Monica beluchi storyline is such an afterthought she disa appears for huge stretches of the film and the story just moves along without her I do have to tip my cap to Tim Burton in the style Department his commitment to sticking with practical effects
like models real sets and extensive Prosthetics makes the second Beetle juu film feel exactly like the first Beetle juu 2 lacks the kind of generic flat and yet sort of glossy look that so many decades later sequels have been plagued with and that's a good thing and it's also good to know that Tim Burton after 36 years years is still able to bring that style and atmosphere that made the first movie so memorable to begin with now I'm not a Beetle Juice purist I did not grow up with it as a kid the first movie's
language and crassness kept it on the do not watch list when I was young even at the peak of my Batman Michael Keaton fandom but I do love that first movie even though I saw it a little bit later because I think that it has protagonists that we really care about in the mands Alec Baldwin and and Davis who are kind of handwaved away in this movie and it's something that I think this film lacks as with so many other movies I think your enjoyment of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will depend on what you want going into
the movie If you're looking for Style laughs and some great Beetlejuice moments it delivers if you're looking for an overall story in movie that matches or even favorably compares to the original I think you might be a little bit let down the script by Alfred Goff and Miles malar who were Tim Burton's collaborators on Wednesday which I really enjoyed on Netflix just can't decide what it wants to be it's it's a pretty big mess which left me for a lot of the film just patiently waiting for the next individual joke or sequence or sometimes honestly
not so patiently waiting for that joke or sequence that would make me laugh and there are some big sequences like the attempted replication of the iconic Deo scene from the original film that just for me felt kind of flat after almost four Decades of trying to crack the story for a beetle Jew sequel these writers weren't quite able to do it luckily for them they're bailed out by an immensely talented cast and an ability to at least write some jokes that don't make this movie feel like an eternity sitting in the afterlife waiting room Michael
Keaton alone makes this movie worth recommending but it's hard for me to go much above the top tier of the it's fine range on my personal scale still even given that overall rating for those who have waited such a long time to see The Return of Beetlejuice to the big screen it does deliver some great moments I just wish it was also a great movie so those are my thoughts on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice what do you think are you going to be headed out to see it in the theater let me know down in the comments
