do you know what a vampire is beings who exist from the blood of other humans we all know the story of Snow White how her evil stepmother was jealous of her beauty and tried to kill her with a poison apple but what if this was all a lie what if the real story went a little differently and Snow White's stepmother wasn't evil at all she might have had every reason to try and kill her stepdaughter since after all the girl was a vampire her snow white skin simply a side effect of being the cold-blooded Undead
this is a dark and disturbing Take On The Familiar story that'll make you think about Snow White from a completely different perspective Hello friends this is grief speaking and today we're taking a look at snow glass Apples by Neil giman I recently got some heat from mispronouncing Neil gaiman's name I made the Fatal mistake of calling him Neil Gman and I apologize that was just a straightup flub so I'll get it right this time Gaiman not Gman anyway this was originally a short story by NY Gaiman and was made into this beautiful graphic novel that
was illust ated by Colleen Doran it is a really twisted dark version of the story that basically suggests that the legend of Snow White is made up of lies and half-truths told by Snow White herself in order to cover up the fact that the queen wasn't evil she was only trying to kill a Monster who is terrorizing her and the forest folk it's a great take and is really disturbing so let's not waste any more time and get into it this is snow glass apples explained before we get into the graphic novel I want to
do a really quick recap on the original Grim's fairy tale Snow White because some of the imagery and storytelling will be more interesting if this is fresh in your mind you can skip ahead if you like but I'll make it super brief Snow White was born and unfortunately her mother died in childbirth so her father remarried her new stepmother was jealous of Snow White she asked her magic mirror who's the fairest of them all and it revealed it to be snow white so she sent a huntsman to kill the girl but he couldn't bear to
kill her and let her go instead he took the Queen the organs of a boar and said they were the girls the sick woman actually ate the organs think they were Snow Whites so Snow White is lost in the woods before she stumbles upon the Seven Dwarves and they let her live with them when the queen found she survived she attempted to kill the girl herself in disguise with a poison apple which actually succeeded and the dwarfs placed Snow White's body in a glass coffin until a handsome prince who's passing by decided to take the
coffin to his castle to honor the girl's Beauty in death while they traveled her coffin was jostled and the chunk of poison apple in her throat was knocked out so she came back to life she fell in love with the prince and the two lived happily ever after in his King pretty memorable story and even the original had some disturbing elements like the fact that at Snow White's wedding they forced her evil stepmom to wear hot iron shoes that they had heated up on coals and made her dance in them until she died damn well
if you think that's disturbing wait until you see snow glass apples the story is narrated by the supposedly evil stepmother who begins with the haunting words I do not know what manner of thing she is none of us do she says this about a child and we can see an infant being held by the king whose wife has died during childbirth the queen goes on to say that if she truly was wise she would have killed herself before ever encountering this child not long after this the king took on a new bride a young beautiful
woman with golden hair and the two start boning almost immediately soon after this she moved into the castle with him and his daughter who was 5 years old she says that the girl was pale as the moon and refused to eat with them in fact she never saw her eat at all when the princess was sick she entered her Stepmother's room in the middle of the night her eyes black as coal her lips red as blood and her teeth seemed sharp even in the lampl her stepmother asked her why she was away from her room
and the girl replied that she was hungry so the woman took an apple from the dried fruit hanging in her chamber she says that winter is a time of Hunger of snow and of death it's also the time of the mid-winter feast when they rub Goose oil into the skin of a pig and roast it this detail is actually some interesting foreshadowing that will come to fruition by the end so the princess took the apple and ate it and the stepmother says in that moment she warmed to the beautiful young girl she gently stroked her
cheek with her fingers and the girl smiled which was rare then suddenly the girl bit into her hand at the base of her thumb and you can see she has fangs her stepmother shrieked in pain and was frozen in fear by just looking at the girl she went on to suck blood from the wound until she had her fill and left the wound healed quickly and by the next day it looked more like an old scar but the bite was less scary than the fact that she had been frozen and dominated by this little girl
after this she locked her chamber door and put bars on her Windows as time went on she found that the king called for her less and less he seemed weak and confused and could no no longer make love to her he also became pale and had many ancient scars across his body though he had none when they met soon he died a shell of the man he once was covered in scars and shriveled to skin and bone the ground was frozen so they made a Caren of rocks and stones though this served as only a
memorial as there was little enough of him left to protect from the Hunger of beasts and birds so now the King's new bride was the queen she was foolish and young and says that she didn't do what she would do now she says she would have had her stepdaughter's heart cut out then she would have her head and limbs cut off finally she would have dismal her she would then throw all of her body parts into a hot fire in the town square and have archers kill any animal that went near the Flames she would
watch until the princess was burnt to Ash and wind could scatter her like snow well godamn lady that seems like Overkill but later you'll get why she's thinking this way she ends by saying I did not do these things and we all pay for our mistakes next we see the queen is holding a heart the rumors say that she was fooled and that this is only the heart of a stag or but they are wrong and some even say but it is the girl's lie that she had eaten the heart she says that lies and
Hal truths fall like snow covering the things she remembers it's interesting because in the original Snow White story she's given organs from a boar and told they are Snow Whites but this is implying that the Snow White story we all know is actually rumors lies and Hal truths she also decides to throw in more details about her dead husband how there were scars all over his body when he died including his bollock pouch and his male member okay I could have gone without knowing that information but anyway let's get to the part about why she's
holding a heart well the queen sent her Huntsman to kill the girl they grabbed her during the day when she was at her weakest and dragged her to the heart of the forest where they cut open her chest leaving her dead and bringing back her heart to the queen she knew it was her stepdaughters because of the fact that it continued beating she hung the still beating heart from the beams above her head and shung it with berries and garlic next we learn of the spring fair a large celebration that would draw in all manner
of people including the strange folk of the forest they were dangerous people some of which were deformed or otherwise altered dwarfs pygmies and hunchbacks we learned that when she was younger the queen had actually worked at the fair telling fortunes using a pool of Still Water and later by way of a magical mirror the stall holders of the fair were afraid of the forest folk if they didn't nail down their Wares the forest folk would take them and run away they did have coin however though it was often stained green with time and the face
on the coin was unknown to even the oldest of the Town folk years passed and the people claimed that the queen was a wise ruler the heart still hung above her head pulsing gently in the night but no one mourned the loss of the princess who was a terror even to them the spring fair was declining in quality by the year and less Forest folk came to trade eventually only a fearful huddle of little hairy men came and no one else the Lord of the fair came to the queen in need of her wisdom he
remembered how she had found a lost infant who had wandered Into the Woods by staring into her mirror and so now he asked if she could tell him what had been killing the forest folk at this news the queen fetched her Looking Glass and gazed into it here she saw the disturbing truth the princess was still alive though no longer a child her skin still pale eyes black as coal and lips red as blood she moved through the forest from tree to tree with Supernatural speed much like Naruto okay that last part wasn't in the
book but it just reminded me of it the queen continued to watch in the mirror as the princess stalked a lowly Monk on the brink of starvation she approached him and he threw her a copper penny she nodded and began to undress okay I didn't expect it to take that route yeah so she straddles the guy and then takes a big bite out of his chest and drank his blood as she did a thin blackish liquid dripped from between her legs okay besides the scene being altogether ukie I don't get why he gave her the
penny I guess he assumed she was a prostitute or something but he didn't really question this vampire chick jumping out of a tree and trying to bang him anyway the queen now knew what was killing the forest folk she declared she would make the forest safe again despite being terrified of the girl a foolish woman would have gone into the forest and tried to capture the creature but she was no longer foolish she spent time reading old books and learned from the gypsy women that sometimes pass through her country when the first snows began to
fall she was ready completely naked the queen climbs to the highest tower carrying a silver Basin and a basket in which was a silver knife a silver pen and three green apples taking the silver knife she drew blood from her wrist into the Basin then she added a mysterious Powder made from dried herbs and the skin of a particular toad it thickened the blood and she dipped the silver pin in it and pricked the skins of the apples filling them with the blood she then waited for the first snowflakes of the year to fall into
her skin and the apples as she sat there naked in the Moonlight after this she cast a spell on the apples to make them highly attractive to the eye the most wonderful apples in the world then she dawned a large cloak concealed herself under it and with the basket of apples in hand she traveled to the creatures dwelling near the mouth of a cave the queen hid and watched soon she watches as a group of dwarfs emerg from the cave she mentions that these were the original inhabitants of this country but were seldom seen these
days the the dwarfs vanished into the woods although one of them stopped to take a piss on the Rock the queen is hiding behind kind of a weird detail but whatever the queen then approached the cave and using the voice of an old woman cried out into it the scar on her hand throbbed and pulsed as the princess emerged her pale skin was still perfect except for a scar above where her heart was taken and the wet black filth staining her thighs she offered pretty ribbons for the girl's hair and the scar on the Queen's
hand seemed to pull her toward the princess but she did what she had planned to do she dropped the basket and and screeched like the bloodless old Peddler woman she was pretending to be she ran away with swift speed and her cloak worked as camouflage in the forest back at the castle the queen imagines what might have happened she likes to think the girl played with the ribbons first then she moved the cloth to see what else was in the basket and found the apples they smell of blood and she was hungry so she couldn't
resist a bite by the time the queen had reached her Chambers the heart that hung from the roof beam had stopped beating she felt safe once more watching the heart hang motionless that Spring Fair was slightly improved that year with more Forest folk showing up and also some travelers from Lands Beyond the little men hairy Dwarfs of the forest cave were there buying up all the pieces of glass quartz and Crystal they could find the queen thought of having them killed but did not as long as the heart hung silent and cold she was safe
it had been 2 years since her stepdaughter had eaten the poison fruit when a prince from Beyond the mountains arrived tall and handsome the queen was practical thinking of the alliance of the two kingdoms as she entered the prince's room in the night to try and get some hot young Royal dick the thing is it turns out the prince is a bit of a freak first he asked her to stand by the window till her skin was freezing cold then he told her to lie on her back with her hands on her chest and eyes
wide open staring at the ceiling he tells her to remain as still as possible kind of like a Corps but the queen starts getting into it and I kid you not the guy is turned off because she moved too much yeah so that confirms it this guy is only attracted to dead bodies AKA a necrophiliac he leaves the castle crying when he happens Upon A group of dwarves there standing by a Caren made of glass and mourning the prince approaches the glass coffin and spots the beautiful dead girl inside for a necrophiliac like our young
prince here this might as well have been Christmas he offered the dwarfs a ton of gold for the girl and they accepted it well I'm sure you can guess where this is going and it's as Despicable as you might think the prince began to violate her corpse and in doing so unlodged the chunk of poison apple from her throat allowing her to come back to life the queen realizes this is true when the heart in her chamber begins to pump and blood drips on onto her face as she sleeps next she hears a loud banging
on her chamber door the prince has returned and has his men capture her before spitting in her face there behind him stood her stepdaughter she walked into the chamber and pulled her heart from the ceiling then in gruesome detail she split her own chest open licked to the heart and puts it back inside her prince Embraces his new bride and they tell the queen that she will attend their wedding next we see time has passed and the queen is sitting in a dungeon in her own filth on this day the prince's men retrieved her they
shaved her body and head and covered her in Goose oil she was brought naked before her stepdaughter and the prince she took one more glance at the princess before being thrown into a Kil a snowflake had landed on her stepdaughter's cheek that didn't melt the midwinter crowds cheer and sing as the Kiln begins to heat up as her flesh begins to burn the queen says she will not scream she will not give them the satisfaction instead she thought of the snowflake on the girl's cheek she thinks of her hair black as coal her lips redder
than blood her skin Snow White and that my friends is snow glass apples I love that this is kind of an ALT history of Snow White the original story is pretty short so there's a lot of room to play around with here while a lot of this relies on accepting the original story to be full of lies there's still some cool lore thrown in here like the Queen's past working as a fortune teller at the spring fair the forest people and the ritual used to create the poison apples there's some interesting parallels here as well
like how the queen in this story cuts her arm three times and allows the snow to mix with the blood in the original story story Snow White's mother accidentally pricks her finger and three blood drops fell in the snow when she sees the beauty of it she wishes she had a daughter white as snow with red lips in the original fairy tale her mother does die at childbirth but I like the idea that this was due to the infant Snow White literally draining her mother's life snow glass apples also gives us an explanation of what
happened to Snow White's father the king in the Grim's version her father is basically never mentioned after he remarries but the vampire Snow White sucking his blood till he dies a husk of a man is a cool addition probably one of the strangest parts of the original story is the prince finding the Dead Snow White and deciding he just wants to take this corpse to his castle so it was a funny idea making him attracted to dead bodies and it's a disturbing way to make sense of his bizarre actions I mean I could go on
there's a ton of interesting detail similarities and differences so let me know what you guys thought what are some details I might have missed and what do you think this story is really about I'd love to hear it in the comments well there you have it hope you guys enjoyed this one I know it's short but I just thought it was a really cool comic shout out to Kil me Katy as always for the intro and outro music which is likely playing right now and of course my patrons for supporting the channel if you want
