Could a delayed flight and a 24-hour cafeteria can teach you on work safety Sty there I will share a personal story Stay there, as I share a personal story and you will understand that they can. After all, safety is understanding people and people are everywhere. Yeah, and after a long time without corporate travels.
Like most everyone on this planet earth. I started travelling for business. And after two years very close to inactivity the air transport system is regaining its capacity and as is to be expected of any system under these conditions, errors and problems will happen What I didn't expect, was to spend 12 hours trapped in a city without a hotel or a bed to sleep Well, given of my condition the only option left, after many hours fasting, was to look for a 24h diner for a bite to eat thing and spend my time.
I had the pleasant surprise to find a excellent diner in the city. I was well received, even though it was past midnight. They gave me a very nice seat and they served me a really yummy food.
What I didn't expect, given the friendliness of the staff, was to see a poster like this taped to the kitchen door Okay I was not received by people who worked in the kitchen. The poster said No free food, No check / No food. Don't overcook.
Clean and restock. Not following these rules can lead to suspension or dismissal. After eating, between dozing off and watching some of my favorite series I couldn't help but making the connection between this poster and everything we live day to day with the safety of work Do we really need to manage through threats?
Do we we need to remind people who work in a the restaurant, selling meals, that it is not allowed to give free food. Do I need a poster on the wall to remind people working in a restaurant that it's not OK to serve poorly cooked food? After all, tips from those kind of meals shouldn't be very interesting for those who work there.
But what does it have to do with safety of work? What? !
How? ! Think of how many signs and posters you see in your work environment very similar to this one The so called golden rules that if not followed will lead you to immediate dismissal.
managing like this only moves people away. If you have a poster threatening to layoff people as a consequence of mistakes as trivial as this, how will they will feel when they need share more complex things, difficult mistakes or complicated situations? Will people really share their needs?
What they really require to perform the job successfully? Trust is the basis for building safety of work. And what can threats do for trust?
I will bathe the Starways in your blood After thinking about that poster and other things, and watching a few episodes of my favorite series, I finally got the check and resumed my travel. The air transport system had recovered and managed to get me back home safely so I could finally rest and share some of it with you Tell me, will you find similar situations where you work?
