thank you thank you very much and good morning you may be seated in fact while you're being seated I think I'll sit down also because I want to get acquainted with you my name is John what's your name my name is John Quail soon Army nice to meet you we're now friends I love Brazil Brazil and I am so honored to be here I am just excited about this day as a young leader in 1981 I came to Sao Paulo and I visited this church and I was inspired by what I saw and what I witnessed while I was here in Brazil Aquino Brazil and I went back to America and built another church and began to teach a lot about leadership so I have been looking forward to coming back to this great country in biblical terms if you live in Brazil you kind of live in Canaan in Canada I I have I have become convinced that there's no place like this place anywhere near this place is and I'm delighted to be here [Applause] my wife Margaret and I have been married for 39 years we have two children they're both married and we have five grandchildrenatos now grandchildren are wonderful when you hold them in your arms you realize how smart and beautiful and intelligent they are whenever in fact you look at your grandchildren and ask why has Intelligence skipped degeneration I was um speaking at a large convention and I just told the story I just gave you yourself and I forgot that my son Joel was in the audience so after I spoke he came up to me and I said Joe I was just joking I was just joking about intelligence skipping a generation and he said no no no Dad don't don't apologize in fact he said I think you're right I said you do they're dodgy he said yes and in fact that he said just last week Grandpa and I had that very same discussion [Laughter] I turned 60 last year and although I'm known for teaching leadership yeah I uh when you turn 60 you become a philosopher of life and so before I begin my teaching today I want to read something to you that will explain life to you how many of you have ever had questions about life okay have good news I have all the answers right here in fact these words are so important that I laminated it it if anything is important I laminate it if I would have been Moses going up on top of Mount Sinai I would have laminated The Ten Commandments I I wouldn't have put them on Stone Those will break here we go on the first day God created the dog God said sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anybody that goes by itself and I will give you a lifespan of 20 years the dog said that's too long to be barking is give me 10 years and I'll give you back the other 10. and God agreed on the second day God created the monkey God said entered paying people do monkey tricks make them laugh did you see entertainers and I'll give you a 20-year lifespanz the monkey said how boring monkey tricks for 20 years I don't think so um the doll gave you back 10 years so that's what I'll do too okay and God agreed Nations on the third day God created the cow you know God said you must go out in the field with a farmer all day long suffer Under the Sun have calves and give milk to support the farmer and I will give you a lifespan of 60 years the cow said that's kind of a tough life you want me to live for 60 years let me have 20 and I'll give you back the other 40. on the fourth day God created man God said eat sleep play Mary enjoy your life okay only 20 years I'll tell you what I'll take my 20.
add the 40 the cow gave you back the 10 the monkey gave you back the 10 the dog gave you back that makes Sadie okay God said okay you've got a deal so that is why the first 20 years of Our Lives we eat sleep play and enjoy ourselves for the next 40 years we slave in the sun to support our families for the next 10 years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildrenosis and for the last 10 years we sit on the front porch and bark at everybody that goes you've just had life explained to you yes [Applause] I'm ready to teach you about leadership I'm ready to teach you about making a difference and I'm excited you're still enthusiasm I'm excited because what's going to happen in the next hour is going to be life-changing how many of you would like to be a better leader is how many of you would like to make a difference in your country is then I have good news for you it's going to begin right now have you got your paper look at your neighbor to make sure they're ready to take notes in fact look at your neighbor and say to them you're going to learn something in fact look at them and say and it's about time let me show you something interesting to you about leadership we've seen leaders as being out front casting Vision Paving the way leading people and leaders do all those things but I have discovered in studying leadership students that leaders before they do all of those things ask themselves some very important questions today I would like to share with you some of the questions that leaders ask themselves in fact on this card that I'm holding up to you now is a list of questions that I ask myself as a leader and I periodically will pull out this list and look at it and review it is and the reason I do this is very important if I am to have integrity in my leadership I have to have integrity in my life I can remember at a conference I held on leadership a couple of years ago foreign so I don't have a yet a job or I don't have a team to lead so the question I have for you is this who should I start leading and I smiled and I said to him start with yourself I want to make sure you get this the first person you should leave is you it will say in fact don't attempt to lead other people until you have led yourself don't attempt to change other people until you've changed yourself the most important leadership principle I know is this people do what people see people truly do Follow the Leader they're going to be just like you they're going to have your values they're going to see your vision they're going to live their life as they've watched you live your life and too often as Leaders we want to change others and I say before you do any of those things look at your own life and ask yourself this question am I a leader worth following that's an amazing question am I a leader worth following do I live a life of integrity am I able to lift people to higher levels am I able to find answers for people that are asking questions am I able to provide security for those that are are feeling insecure is leadership does not begin with others leadership begins with me as I grow they'll grow as I learn they'll learn as I change they'll change they will basically become like me let me put it this way to you if you wouldn't follow yourself why should anyone else follow you so the questions that we're going to ask are questions of the heart because of the greatness of the leader does it begin in the head of course leaders see things horse leaders have wonderful minds but leadership does not begin in the head it begins in the heart in fact I would encourage you today even as I teach this lesson to you to kind of breathe a prayer to God and ask God to give you the heart of a leader leaders in fact before I continue on I want to pray that over you father why made the men and women in this auditorium today not only right leadership principles on paper principles but may you write those leadership principles on their hearts may they be challenged mentally but may they be moved spiritually search our heart oh God we give you permission right now to just walk into our lives and look at it help us not to want to be a leader for wrong reasons help us not to want to have power or possessions keep us from being lifted up with pride foreign and give us just a heart for you and a heart for people and a heart to lift people so I ask as I begin teaching this lesson that while we write notes and as we listen you'll begin preparing our heart to become the leaders you have destined us to be foreign give me a heart for you God give me a heart for people give me a heart to lead people and to make a difference difference amen amen question number one am I genuinely interested in people is that's the first question I ask myself and the reason I ask myself that question am I genuinely interested in people yes it's because that question check-in checks my motives that question speaks to my heart yes let me give you the DNA of a leader leader leaders see more than others see that is that's why they cast Vision that's why they lead in Direction they see the big picture leaders not only see more than others see neither is but they also see before others see Elizabeth and they see that's the characteristic of a leader yes it is not that they're smarter than everybody else on the team you soon it's just they see like a leader seas and they think like a leader thinks so let me explain it this way if you're on a team of 10 people and everyone in the room has figured it out except you're not the leader of the pack leaders see more and leaders see before now that brings us to the question am I genuinely interested in people yes since as a leader you're going to see more than others see and you're going to see before others you can use that knowledge either to help people or hurt people is you could use that knowledge to either take advantage of people is a tremendous responsibility in your hands responsibility many leaders take advantage of people they manipulate people they move people for their personal Advantage they receive personal gain because of their moving of the people manipulating the people is always easy to sense whenever you as a leader put yourself before your people you're manipulating them when you when you think of yourself before other people you're manipulating them when you get people to do things that are your advantage but not to their advantage you manipulate them and it is always wrong is is simply a hat and the question am I genuinely interested in people if you can answer a yes to that question this will support you deserves that will purify your motives and that will keep your leadership there are three questions people ask when they're going to follow you as a leader is the first question they ask is can you help me obviously that's an important question because people need help and leaders help people Leaders with them leaders add value to them leaders build into their life so when people are looking to you for leadership one of the questions they're going to ask is can you help me leaders should make things better for their people the second question they're going to ask when they follow you as a leader is do you care about me yeah see the question can you help me is about your ability can you help me ask about your leadership skills and your leadership giftedness and you want to be a competent leader but when they ask the question do you care about me that's about your heart and people don't want to follow somebody that can help them but doesn't care for them and to be honest with you we don't want to follow somebody that can care for us that can't help us it's not either or it's both can you help me do you care about it there's one other question they ask when they want to follow you as a leader yeah that question is can I trust you yes can I trust you do you have integrity in your life so that you will not violate my trusted in America a few years ago we had a lot of corporate scandals is a lot of major CEOs of companies were men and women that that violated the trust of their people is during the summer of all of these corporations with the mistrust began to be uh apparentos I was in New York City having dinner with my publisher yes and he said John there's an awful lot of corporate Scandal today and I would like you to write a book he said I want the book to be about business ethics and I looked at him and I said I I can't write that book he said well why can't you write this book you know I said because there's no such thing as business ethics there's just ethics you either have them over here if you have them they'll work in business and they'll work in your family and they'll work in your community and they'll work on the job if I have them they'll work anywhere but you cannot compartmentalize ethics it's not part of your life it's a way of your life so the first question I ask myself is am I genuinely interested in people let me put it this way because I teach on leadership many times people will come up to me and say uh I want to be a leader is and whenever they say that I I always ask them why and I'm very interested in their answer yes sometimes they'll say because I like to lead I like to be in control I like to make decisions I want a parking place wrong reasons there's only one reason to want to be a leader is in that reason is to add value to people yes that's the only reason so I want you on your piece of paper before I go to the next question to ask yourself this question is am I adding value with people our people's lives better because I lead them in my book leadership gold I have a chapter entitled ado if you want to know how a leader is doing look at the followers don't ask the leader the leader always say they're doing a good job look at the followers in fact I want to take a moment now and and share with you three ways that you can add value to people and and for me there are four ways and if you do good on taking notes on the first three I'll give you mine the fourth one episode here are the ways to add value to people yes it amazes me that Christians many times don't value people as much as they should says especially in light of Jesus and how he constantly lifted the worth and the value of people Jesus Christ in fact the ultimate illustration of Our Lord valuing people is the very fact that he came to live with us and walk with us and die for our sins listen carefully if I value my relationship with Jesus I need to Value people it's inconceivable that I could value him and not value his creation so if you want to add value to people value people if you want to add value to people know and relate to what they value is in other words walk slowly through the crowds leaders are great listeners in fact this is how it works yes leaders listen leaders leaders listen learn leader all of the cues of leadership come from listening and learning is great leaders walk slowly through the crowd if you want to add value to people number one you have to Value people number two you have to know and relate to what they value is number three you have to make yourself more valuable in other words you need to keep getting better you need to keep growing you need to keep leaning the speed of the leader determines the speed of the past the size of the leader determines the size of the organization the strength of the leader determines the strength of the people so to add value to people you have to keep getting better yourself you've got to make it a commitment to grow yourself thank you foreign that's an important question what are you doing to personally grow and develop Yourself by the way that's not a selfish question a leader has to take care of himself or herself before he can she can take care of people so ask yourself the question what am I doing to get better growth is not an automatic process if we are going to grow it is because it is intentional we have to grow on purpose I am so excited about so many young people here I was 26 when I had a life-changing principle enter into me says I was having breakfast with another leader and he asked me this question is John what are you doing to grow yourself I didn't have an answer in fact I was frustrated I I didn't know that I was supposed to continually personally grow and so I tried to answer him in an evasive way because I was embarrassed I told him how hard I worked my daily schedule was and I talked for 15 minutes and I was like a plane circling an Airfield trying to come in for land and finally I ran out of Gasolina and I landed the plane as soon as I quit talking he looked at me and he said John you don't have a personal growth plan do you for John Wilson and I said no no that day changed my life I went home and I sat down with my wife Margaret and I said today I heard somebody talk about if I'm going to get better it's going to have to be intentional garage and I don't even know what a personal growth plan is but I'm going to find out myself and when I find one I'm going to develop it for myself that was in 1973 and for 30 plus years I have been on a personal growth plan is and I want to take a moment and share with you two things that will help you to grow yourself Lugar find your strength zone or your giftedness in other words find out what you're talented in what you were spiritually gifted for is the spiritual eyes because in that area that's where you want to grow and learn and make a commitment when you find your strengths that you are every day going to work on increasing those strengths and getting better for example if you love leadership I was having a conversation with a young man today named Robert is and Robert said to me several years ago I picked up your book John developing the leader within you yeah and as I read that book something moved within me and I realized that I wanted to be a leader and he said I began reading all of your books on leadership today this young man is one of the finest leaders in Latin America yesterday find the things that you do well foreign read reflect and write on what you're learning Leia hefleta is in other words every day in the subject of leadership I read about leadership and I not only read every day on the subject of leadership I reflect on what I read and I not only think about what I read you know but I get my notepad out and I write what I learned and I do this every day somebody said to me John you've written over 50 books how did you do that one word at a time every day I read every day I reflect every day I write you say John what do you mean every day was Jesus I mean every day do you mean six out of seven days no I I mean every day every day you cannot accomplish as much as you think you can in a short time but you can accomplish more than you think you can stance and I am at the stage of my life where all the things I have read all the things I've reflected on all the things I've written they have begun to compile yes but I have more books to write that I haven't written today than I did when I started when I wrote my first book I could hardly write my first book because I didn't have enough to say now that I've written 57 books I have seven more books inside of me they're saying let me out let me out I want that to happen to you and it will if I if C every day you read every day you reflect and every day you're right I'm going to take a two minute timeout now and I'm going to share with you for leadership books that will help you to grow as a leader when I began our session today together I asked how many of you wanted to learn how to lead and be a better leader yeah I've got good news you can become a better leader in fact look at your neighbor and say you you can become a better leader go ahead okay in fact when I do leadership conferences the number one question I'm going to ask is people will raise their hand and they'll say John are leaders born and my answer is always the same yeah of course they are Clarence think about that question I've never met an unborn leader don't particularly want to either thank you see what they're asking is are there people with that when they're born they're they're going to be a leader yeah and others when they're born they're they're they're not they're just going to be a follower and the good news is you can learn to leave and the way to learn the lead yeah to expose your life to other leaders read leadership books oh here's a thought read every day reflect every day is and write every day the key is every day here's the first book that will help you it's called leadership it's the lessons that I've learned in my lifetime as a leader is I call this my old man book because I said I wouldn't write it until I was 60. so the day I turned 60. I started writing the book and here it is and it's for you yeah and here's what's really important the first people in the world to have this book available to them is you is in other words no one else has seen this book I knew I was coming to Brazil but I told my publisher could you get an early release of the book so that when I'm in Brazil because those people are smart and talented and gifted you know Jesus I said can we can we do an early release an early release so that so so that they can have the book first the first time I saw this book was when I landed in San Paulo two days ago yeah in America they're not even going to get this book released until April so here's what I want you to do yeah get the book call your friends in the states and say I know something about leadership that you don't know I am excited that this first release is in Brazil and it's a gift from me to you because I want to see you grow as a leader yes the second leadership book is the 360 degree leaders and this book is for people that don't have the number one leadership position in their organizations because when I teach leadership conferences often people will raise their hand and say John I love your leadership principles but I'm not the leader of my team is and so I said I'm going to write a book for a person that isn't the number one leader intelligence how many of you are not the number one leader in your organization okay this book's for you yes 360 degree leader neither president how to influence people above you come here Influence People beside you Influence People beneath you yeah 360 Degrees I almost called this book leading from the middle of the pack with the subtitle follow me I'm right behind you say a very important book even with important and then I have the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership this book is in 47 languages 104 countries it's the basic on leadership I'm curious how many of you have this book raise your hand oh that's wonderful wonderful wonderful put your hands back out makes me feel good in fact put both hands up twice as many twice now the people that have their hands up they're truly the great leaders yes I also have one more thing but I can't find it do they have the leadership Bible here they hope they do okay I'm going to assume the at The Book Table because when I'm done speaking I'm going to bid The Book Table I'll sign books they have the Maxwell leadership Bible if you love The Bible and you love leadership Maxwell for 25 years I was a pastor Province and everything I taught on biblical leadership is in this Bible there are over 600 lessons on spiritual leadership in the Maxwell leadership oh you have one did you get that here did you get that here if you'll stay with me for 30 more minutes I want to talk to you about making a difference when you look in the Bible you find men and women who made a difference and I would like to take a few minutes to talk about a few of them and apply it to your life and where you are at this stage the Hebrew writer says that as you and I run this race that we're surrounded by a cloud of witnesses in other words as we're running our life race the great men and women of faith and the great leaders are watching us and they're cheering Us in French and I want to take a moment this morning to bring a couple of them out of the crowded and let them run one lap with you because Noah made a difference you made a difference for his family it made a difference in his generation he made a difference in the heart of God because the Bible says God looked down and saw Noah and in the in spite of all the sinfulness of mankind [Music] Noah found Grace in the eyes of the Lord deals in other words Noah made a difference and if he were here today he would say you can make a difference you can make a difference no matter how old you are important because when Noah built the ark and rescued his family he was 600 years old how many of you are under 600.
then you can make a difference look at your neighbor and say you can make a difference if I could bring David out of the crowd here's what David would tell you you can overcome the limitations others have placed upon you said and I know that's what David would say is because as a young man he had a lot of people put limitations on him as a young person he had a lot of people not believe in him never consider him to be having much potential think about it for a moment the greatest King Israel has ever had started his young life with people not thinking he would amount to much and I know David felt that because of the story Samuel the prophet of Israel somewhere one day talked to Jesse the father of David and said Jesse I'm going to come over to your house tomorrow because one of your sons Jesse was excited he went home and he got his wife and he said honey I I talked to I talked to Samuel today and he's coming over to the house tomorrow and you know he's the prophet of the land and by the way honey we need to clean the house and sweetheart he said that one of our boys is going to be the next king of Israel and can you imagine one of our boys will be the next king hey I know what Jesse and his wife did that whole afternoon they said at the table they get out their pad of paper they got out their pen they got out their pins and they began to write the names of their sons on that paper started with the oldest went to the youngest value all my driving and they looked at each other and said which son is going to be the next king king and probably Jesse said you know honey it'll be the oldest boy you just said because in our culture the oldest boy always gets all the stuff and I could hear Jesse's wife say no no I don't think it'll be the oldest I think it'll be the third side the third son why do you think it's going to be here because think about it since he was born still he's walked around the house like he was the king he tells us what it is just real bossy he's always been like okay here's what I know in visual case that day they continually looked over their list of sons and ask themselves who has Keen potential just said hey now you know the story the next day Samuel comes to the house the president somewhere else it's clean it's the boys are all lined up got the coach they look nice the big man's come to town one of them is going to be the king you want to impress him you want to look good you smell good yeah so here put your shoulders back look like a man and Samuel went down the entire line of boys and when he got to the end he was puzzled he looked at Jesse and he said Jesse um none of these boys is going to be the king I don't understand I ask you to have all the boys together because one of your sons is supposed to be the name and Jesse is a prophet of God I can tell you this is none of these boys do you have any other Sons it was at that moment that Jesse understood that there was one son that he never thought had the potential to be a king yes he wasn't in the room he wasn't in the lineup he was out in the field watching the Sheep they quickly ran out and got David and brought him in yes and as soon as Samuel saw him he said that's the one he anointed David to be the king of Israel how would you have liked to be David that day come on out in the field when you know that Samuel was looking for the next king and you weren't even invited to be in the house how would you like to be David and realize that if all the boys in the family you're the least one that your parents think will ever be successful now you see why David would say you can overcome the limitations others place it doesn't stop there remember when they were in battle against the Philistines David's older's brothers were fighting the battle Jesse called David in and gave him some food said go out to the battle give food to your brothers and take news from the war back to me so David took the food he went out to the battle he was kind of excited as soon as his brother saw him yeah he said David what are you doing here you don't belong here David this is a place for soldiers there's a battle going on there's a big giant out there that's just talking here give us the food and get back home see his brothers didn't think that David had potential to be a soldier potency but David hung around that afternoon and he saw the Big Boy come out and he began to hear that whoever fought the giant would get to marry the Queen's daughter and he said that's a good thing I used to have same with two ball ah she's pretty I wouldn't mind marrying her and then he also heard that if he fought the Giant and defeated him he could live tax-free in the land oh he said that's even better he said I'll fight the big boys they took David to King Saul's tent yeah they went in the tent and said Saul then she had a lot we have good news and bad news the good news is we have a volunteer to fight she said wonderful what's the bad news come outside the tent I think I saw siggins kane hey it's him alien came Saul when he looked at David tried to talk him out of it you don't want to do this you're not a warrior that that man's a giant and David said no I I want to do this now King Saul decided that if David was going to do this foreign I mean David David is five foot five weighs 145. he is Saul was six foot five weighs 245.
