what's up guys welcome back to my channel I hope you're having a lovely day today and I hope it gets even better from watching this video today I wanted to look like you know natural Greek Vibes I felt like this was appropriate for the video and I think I ended up looking like I'm about to join the Mormon church I don't know what their relationship with social media is but it's probably better than mine used to be so you know I think it's still fitting but today we're chatting all about how to change your relationship
with your screen your social media and break the addiction that most of us have with it if you want to use this video to completely get off of social media then this will hopefully help you do that but especially if you want to change the way you've been using it obviously there's so many positives when it comes to social media and our screens like I have my whole career because of it and I personally didn't want to get off of it completely but there were so many unhealthy ways of how I was using it and
I spent almost my whole day behind the screen like I had this aha moment I was sitting on the couch and I was kind of going through how I spent my day and I was like okay I spent 8 hours working on my computer and my phone I was chatting with my best friend back home on FaceTime for 2 hours then I was scrolling on Instagram and Tik Tok and I watched a few YouTube videos and then my boyfriend and I watched a show and then I read on my Kindle and I was like oh
my God I literally spent my entire day behind the screen and I was sitting there and I felt like I was in the book Ready Player one without all the action and that is not how I want to live my life okay I want to actually enjoy my life and live a rich fulfilling life that's not behind the screen it really was like that aha moment of I need to really really change something in order to live the life that I want to live because this is not this is not working like this is not
actually making me happy and not to get super morbid or anything but if I was on my deathbed right now this would be my number one regret like the amount of time I wasted filling my brain with so much useless information watching so many random videos that didn't even make me happy like it didn't even make me feel good you know so basically I decided to completely change my relationship with social media and screen time in general and I read a lot of really good books I did some research so I'm going to share the
best tips and tricks that I found and kind of like a road map of how to do this so part one is we're going to get super clear on what the problem actually is is and get you to feel motivated so you actually want to do something about it okay so the first thing you're going to do is you're going to look at your screen time and look at your phone your computer everything that you use because this will give you the full picture one thing I really recommend just to really go full out is
to calculate how many days in a year that is so for example the average person spends around 7 hours behind a screen a day and if you calculate that that's six days in a year that's almost 13 of a year and when I saw those numbers that just like reaffirmed how much I wanted to change this and that's what you want you want that internal drive and motivation that will keep you going I wanted to go a step further so I got my journal out and I asked myself how does my life genuinely like honestly
look like because of screen time and social media so write like how do you feel about that are you happy with that are you because it's up to you if you're happy with what you're doing then you should keep doing that you can click out of this video and we're all good and then I went one step further and I asked myself how would I prefer that my life looks like how would I prefer to spend my time or my free time and for me it was like I want to be outside I want to
be with the people I love I want to travel I want to read I want to go to the market every weekend and get some fresh food I want to get flowers for myself and make really cute bouquet like none of it pretty much had anything to do with social media and again I want to reiterate that this is not so you get get off social media completely and it's evil and it's blah blah blah it's about you finding those positives seeing what's actually important to you what you value and then spending your time on
those and leaving the rest behind one thing that I knew for sure that I did not want to leave behind is online therapy I've been doing it for years I have an amazing therapist and I do not want to leave that behind like that is a massive positive benefit so if you want to try a online therapy better help is an amazing resource and they're kindly sponsoring this video I know and really understand how scary it can be to start therapy especially for the first time so better help makes the whole experience a lot easier
and more comfortable it's online therapy so it's totally up to you if you do it through a phone call a video chat or even through messages and you can schedule therapy sessions at a time that's convenient for you and of course from the comfort of your own home better help basically connects you with a licensed therapist who's trained to listen and give you helpful unbiased advice you can click the link in the description box or visit betterhelp.com Nika if you want to try it out for yourself but it's really easy to get started you basically
fill out a question questionaire to assess your specific needs and then you'll get matched with your therapist in most cases within 48 hours or less if you've ever tried therapy in person then you know that getting that first initial appointment can be really hard or there might not be amazing therapists in your area that fit your specific needs so better help is great because they have such a large range of expertise there's over 30,000 therapists in their Network and if the therapist you're first matched with doesn't really feel like the right fit you can easily
switch to a new therapist at no additional cost over 4 million people have these better help to start living a healthier happier more intentional life I've seen such a huge Improvement in my life so I really hope you find the right fit and get the same benefits as I have you can click the link in the description box or visit betterhelp.com Nika so that will give you 10% off your first month of betterhelp so you can connect with a therapist and see if it helps you a pretty big part for me of why I wanted
to do this also is I wanted to know like what would my brain be like if I'm not like constantly filling it with so much information that that it's not designed to process like would I feel more at peace would I be bored out of my mind how does it even feel to be bored I honestly don't know anymore because as soon as I feel bored I just open social media and I can just be entertained for hours on end you know I wanted to see like how would I spend my free time what would
I do if I felt bored like would I go out on a walk would I read would I find a new passion a new hobby new interest like I don't know and also like what would I genuinely like you know like I feel like so much of how we dress for example is like based on the trends that we see online how you do your makeup and like these are trivial small things but it like trickles everywhere like who would I be without this part two the detox so in a perfect world ideally you would
do this for 30 days and you would get rid of everything so you can really see what you actually value like this will help you to reset your mindset reset these habits because most of us are really addicted to social media especially it's design designed to be addictive that's how they make money it's a huge business so our Judgment of what we actually need and really value is very clouded so these 30 days off of it will help you to clearly see that obviously we live in a world where being completely offline not on a
screen is not very realistic whether it's you want to call someone to make plans use Google Maps to get places go on your bank app to make a transaction so you can obviously keep these things on your phone and only use those so you're going to get rid of everything that you do not need so that is first and foremost going to be social media and any kind of games things like that even like news apps it's okay if you're not informed for 30 days okay the world will not stop spinning you can talk to
your friends and family about it ask them to keep you informed whatever you need to do but those things you do not need to use so as many things as you can get rid of do that for 30 days I also highly suggest to turn off most notifications that you don't need limit phone use in the morning so if that is the first hour of the day the first 20 minutes whatever is realistic for you that will really help you because I've really noticed for me if I spend time in the morning on my phone
even if it's looking at my bank app and then I'll use it a lot more throughout the day it will obviously be easier not to use it in the morning if you have a detox and you have nothing to do on your phone but still it's good to have these kinds of rules and then set a realistic screen time goal for you so if you need your phone for work then keep that in mind obviously you're going to have to keep working in these 30 days so just make it realistic and then also write ideas
of what you can do with all the free time that's opened up to you so what can you do in your free time instead of watching shows being on YouTube scrolling on Tik Tok Instagram whatever what do you genuinely want to do like what do you want to try out do you want to go to a market to get some veggies do you want to try out a new workout class do you want to start painting like whatever it is write as many ideas as possible so that you then have something to fall back on
and also that you're excited about it like this time can be really really amazing for you to reconnect with yourself figure out what you like what you don't like who you are without all of these distractions and really easy escapism methods this part is optional but I think it's really amazing and it's to spend as many days as you can without your screens at all so that's probably going to be like one day in the weekend let's say if you don't have any plans or you don't have any work to do like you can just
spend the full day off all your screen it really really is so good for your mind like I can't even explain it I did this for a whole week once which is obviously not very realistic and it honestly changed my life so even if you can just do this once in a whole month that's good enough if you can do it once a week amazing whatever is realistic for you again we want to make this detox work for you if you want to do a detox and your job is on social media then you need
to find more creative ways to do this okay so for example I deleted all the social media apps off of my phone and I used them online because then I wouldn't like open them and just start scrolling um so if you can do that that would be amazing I know Instagram is really bad online so what you can do if you want to keep your Instagram app if a part of your job is to post on it all the time then just mute everyone unfollow as many people as possible and give yourself a rule that
you're only allowed to post not scroll or look at anyone else so just find creative ways to do this it will obviously make it harder because you'll want to scroll because that's how these things are designed but you need to have some self-control so if you can delete these things as many as possible you should do that it will honestly be much easier and this detox is an amazing time for you to figure out what you really value and what you kind of genuinely miss about social media all these apps so for me like when
I would read a book and I thought something was really interested I would want to research it or I love good reads for example I find so many books on there those are the things that I really really value about social media and so those would be the things I would want to reintroduce in a healthy way you just kind of keep Taps of what's going on obviously this detox might be a little bit hard especially like the first week when you're still so used to using this all the time whenever you feel a little
bit bad you just go on it or you're a tiny bit bored or you're waiting in a line and you just it's so natural and it's so ingrained in us it's such like an intense habit that's really hard to break like for me I've been using these things for like a decade so obviously it's going to be hard to break but the beautiful part about it is you're going to find so many new ways to live your life and be with yourself and you feel so much more at peace you find like Beauty in like
tiny things you can find beauty and waiting in a line and having nothing to do or you can strike a conversation with someone like there's so many ways that life kind of opens up to you honestly when you're not distracted by this all the time and it's really beautiful so it's worth the hard Parts it's worth the beginning part that's that's tough you know okay we've made it to the last part part three where we're going to reintroduce certain apps and things that you really value and want to add back into your life and this
for the most part is going to be pretty self-explanatory if you've kind of kept tabs throughout the month so which apps do you want to reintroduce I have three questions that you can ask yourself this is from the book digital declutter I'll link it down below with the rest of my like books that have changed my life on Amazon so we can find that in the description box but the three questions are does it directly support a value that's important to you does it offer the best way to support that value and then how will
you use it so you only use the feature that supports that value and then you're going to set the rules so you're going to go app by app ask these questions and then lay out the rules so when are you going to use it how often are you going to use it how will you use it and then how you're going to minimize distractions so because I really value information right I chatted about this before that during my detox that was really something I missed the fact that I could research something listen to podcast about
it learn something new like that is very important to me so I would ask myself those three questions to get a good idea of how I want to use it and then I would lay out the rules so for example I do not want to have the app on my phone because I know that if I do I'll go on it and just binge if I have like a bad day and I want to distract myself like realistically that's probably going to happen so I want to avoid that so I will only use it online
on my computer because that feels like more work and like more intention went into it to me for some reason and I am only allowed to let's say watch two YouTube videos a day and then three podcasts in a week and for you you might not be as strict with these rules that's okay you want to do this so it works for you and that works for me so when it comes to when I want to use it let's say I want it to be like at around 5 or 6 when I'm already done with
my work and I've kind of reset already and had some peace and quiet and then I can watch a video or two when it comes to a podcast I want to listen while while I get ready to film because it takes me usually an hour so I have enough time to listen so you kind of like give yourself an allowance so you still get the benefits of what you need and what you value but you don't slip into those negative habits and this will be very individual so you need to like kind of figure it
out yourself I wrote a few like little rules that really really helped me when I kind of introduced these apps so the first one is to set rules and limits as I already mentioned so I will only only watch two YouTube videos a day that is my allowance so that's a rule and then to set limits let's say I can only spend 10 minutes on Instagram a day so you can set like a limit on your phone so it reminds you when you've already spent 10 minutes on it so that way if you really miss
seeing like Instagram stories from three people you can make sure that you only do that and then you get off the app unfollow unsubscribe mute people like that is really really helpful also if you want to reintroduce YouTube It's it's very helpful to delete your history because then the algorithm doesn't really know what you enjoy that much so if you do that consistently the algorithm won't really understand what you enjoy watching it will only decide based on the people you're subscribed to I personally found that really helpful because I do want to still watch YouTube
but I want to limit myself once again another thing that's really helpful is instead of using apps use it online because most of social media especially is designed to be used on the app so it doesn't work that well online and then you don't want to use it that much cuz it's not that fun again set a screen time rule that's really really helpful and it kind of becomes like a game with yourself like can I keep it lower than last week it's just a good little trick especially if you're competitive with yourself or if
you want to do this with a friend it's great also like set rules of when you do not want to use your phone so for example I don't want to use my phone when I'm with people like I want to be present with them I don't want to use it in the morning when I'm just getting ready for the day and when my brain is so like raw and fresh I don't want to bombard it with so much information um I don't want to use it before bed so let's say an hour before bed I
put it away also I don't want to use it when I'm eating so just set rules like that two little iPhone tweaks I don't know how it is on Android but I'm sure there's ways to do this so let's say you do want the Instagram app on your phone because certain things are really important to you but you obviously want to limit your use so you can just remove it from your home screen so that it doesn't doesn't like show up on your home screen and then you can shut off Siri suggestions so when you
go down usually Siri would suggest the apps that you use the most and for me it was always social media so I would just have to do this and click and it was so easy and simple and now I've shut that off so if I do want to get into Instagram I need to physically write Instagram I mean it's a it's a small thing obviously it's probably not going to keep you off of it if you really want to go on it but it does make the step of getting on it a little bit harder
so it's worth a try and then also start leaving your phone behind Okay like this will kind of become a habit when you're doing a detox because you realize that you don't need it anymore for a lot of things so I would just leave it in my bedroom for a long time and I wouldn't even realize it so you'll probably form this as you go through the detox but if not start leaving it behind so if you're reading for example or you're studying put it in a different room and just leave it behind forget about
it the last thing that I haven't done yet but I will is I'm going to get an alarm clock and then I'm going to leave my phone out of my room so before I go to bed I'll leave it in a different room and then my alarm clock can wake me up and I don't have that easy way to get on my phone the first thing in the morning um so that is also something you can try out I really really hope this was helpful I tried to give you guys as many like little ideas
and tips and tricks as possible but of course this is going to be different for everyone especially this last part of what you want to reintroduce so let me know if you're going to try this out and how your DET talk is going to look like if you enjoyed this video I would love for you to subscribe and stick around and check out my social media if you want to see more of my personal life and it's kind of weird to promote that when I've just gone on and on about not using social media maybe
ignore my social media all righty guys thank you so much for watching and I will see you in my next video [Music] bye
