breaking news over consumption is taking over social media from Sephora splurges to Stanley Cup collections Tik Tok and Instagram are full of videos that show buying habits that leave many of us questioning how much is too much hi everyone it's been a bit of a rough start you know what I mean but today we're diving into Super relevant super important topic the culture of overc consumption so let's buckle up so what exactly is overc consumption is the endless cycle of just literally buying things whether it's makeup clothing or stationer because it's trendy aesthetic or because
everyone else is doing the same thing you know the interesting thing is that overc consumption isn't just about like having too much it's about the pressure to buy own and show off and social media has Amplified this to the max and I want to show you how so let's look at some of the Tik Tok videos that I found online that have liter blown my mind [Music] $250 Wally World hygiene haul first of all look what I found I found a Sal de Janeiro boom boom cream D all been telling me there was a that's
enough of that okay like okay I understand it's okay when people purchase some trees for themselves like once in a while something expensive something fancy you can see that oh my God there's so many things they're like all unpacking it's so aesthetic like there's so many like makeup stuff and like stationary and everything I love watching these types of videos who doesn't especially girls I think a lot of them were watching like the tons and tons of makeup related beauty related videos people unpacking their makeup products from Brands you know Chanel Dior in some other
rare Collections and I understand but what I don't really understand is when people buy this cheap products from like Teemu and Shane and then end up throwing them out after just one use some people just buy those things and then forget about them the moment they turn off their cameras like literally like I don't know why do they buy those things like really girl okay you buy the thing and are you really going to use all that stuff that you're buying a lot of the stuff that they buy out there they just throw it out
the next day it's like what wow like look at all this products like lipsticks in every shade imaginable 20 different eyeshadow palettes and don't get me started on the skincare shelves like I don't really know what's going on there and here's the thing do you actually need all of this and more importantly why are we watching this type of content those are the interesting questions that I really would love to ask while watching these types of videos and kind of kind of think about it asame of Benny reset all right just like cute like look
at all these products like look at these like wow right like it's so engaging colorful aesthetic when you're watching this video like literally what all do you think about is just I want that I want the same amount of like well organized makeup look at the jewer wow it's huge she opens it it's it's ginormous I would say people watching it are like wow I won the same thing like really another one organize and stock the Jun drawer with me there are these wooden drawers what is this I stationary or something yeah those some pans
like stationary things wow look at the model products that she has like she has some kind of lights and you know different oh my god look a bunch of things that she has she has some kind of simple mint cookies or whatever she has oh my gosh something for the teeth like like junk drawer like are you calling it a junk drawer I wouldn't say so let's look at the comments like what people write about it this is like the opposite of junk drawer fear yeah the same thing here a junk drawer is meant to
be chaotic all right I found a slice of bread with three bites taken out of it in my junk drawer oh my God okay I'm afraid if you don't get her digging through your junk drawer it's not a junk drawer obviously like they have bragging showing these drawers showing this organization videos like how they're organizing everything calling it some kind of junk drawer uh those just like my leftover from my makeup or whatever and there are the products like from Chanel and some Dior product makeup like what and they're calling it like um it's just
you know just a Jung do work what look at the amount of perfume that she has I don't want to guess started on that one I think that's huge like I think that's really huge look at the model wow and again organiz like why do you need all this plastic obviously like if you have so many Dam products like in your home of course you want to organize them and this by definition requires you to buy some new products like some kind of setup you know shelves and new like drawers whatever like the amount of
like perfume that she has of course she does need those damn organizers you know but it's plastic like you're going to throw that away it's not like a wood stuff that you maybe got to re use you know I got a new look at wow did not fit any wow that's huge that's huge I dumped everything on the floor and this is my brand new V oh and this video has literally blown my mind like I've really cringed with that one because the woman watching the video like she's kind of reacting to the video was
like really reacting dude so funnily like I was laughing out loud when I was watching it and it was so crazy to see like oh my God the am out of the same stuff that the person crams into their closets I don't know hoodies and you know towels and look at the closets like that they use like some Snickers and the video is endless like you're watching it you're watching it and it's like so Speedy oh my God look at the makeup oh my gosh okay so quick so fast many products I can keep up
on this one now at this point look at the woman reacting to the video like and let's look at the comments like under this because I'm just really the worri it that the clothes are so basic like they're no brand clothing whatever I would actually get so pissed if the person was showing some kind of you know Chanel products or some kind of Brandy products you know and how they're organizing them and C it just like oh you know it's just my you know trash trash clothing or something I would not I just I would
get pissed my closet ask if we were poor if I had that many clothes I would probably have a panic attack trying to choose each morning sure me too like I have just several pieces out there like have like a closet behind me right there have several pieces and they all like stored in like on one shelf in my closet and that's all I have and here watching this video makes you feel like okay maybe I have to get some more and some more and some more and some more and that's not going to be
enough either like the person showing so many things of the same type what really let her live it's her money her decision partially right partially not because when I realize the amount of things that they're being thrown away after like she doesn't even use that like was the problem is that she doesn't even come to use that shows it in the video throws it away the moment that she turns off her camera or something it just ends up being in trash and not just like in trash okay but it ends up being in nature you
know and polluting our environment like that's what's so concerning like we have to ask ourselves is that normal for the environment if we think of the global scale and how it affects the community like it's not good it's not normal and we don't have to normalize it and say like okay that just a her decision if you were selfless if you were to care about the environment of the people around you you would not think that you would really kind of send up and like really start talking about it now I'm not saying organizing his
b or something like it's amazing but when you're buying extra things just to like create some kind of aesthetic Vibe isn't that defeating the purpose itself it's not aesthetic to buy that many clothing and then just throw it out like the next day you know is what kind of aesthetic I you're talking about is that really aesthetic oh and this one has literally blown my mind this woman here Monday Wednesday th Frid sat okay she has has got his Stanley C for every day of the week I mean I barely remember to drink from like
one water bottle let alone keep track of like seven of them but here's the crazy part thousands of people are watching this and thinking wow I should get more of those because there must be a reason why she buy seven of those for every part of the week like there must be like Point here but the truth is that there's no [ __ ] point people are doing this because it just seems to be cool like it's aesthetic to show things off and they're just like getting money off of it that's it that's their job
and I get scared how many of people are being affected by the video and I'm just watching it and there's this funny video that I found where the woman just like literally reacting into this video because don't understand why do you need like seven damn Stanley Cubs and I've seen many of the videos that like they're just wow look at the the amount of Stanley Cubs they have why do they need to have that I have about 15 Stanley that are all different shades of pink I have a red one an orange one a beige
one I recently decluttered all of my Starbucks tumblers now it's time to declutter all of my Stanley type tumblers we don't need this many Stanley let's get rid of them look at this glass type Stanley consumerism final boss my husband has like are you going to buy any other Stanley sir I wash it I only need one and you know after watching these videos I get to ask myself why do they need all of this like what's more interesting is why do they show it on camera like as the average person it might seem like
bragging or showing off you know what I mean look at these staning this one matches my outfit so we're going to buy it look they have all these colors I love them into the carts time to check out can you this you're buying something extra you're showing a camera you throw it out like isn't that crazy and on the one hand it's obvious why people make these types of videos just to know influence other people or promote certain products and of course there are certain like trends like over consumption core or consumerism and just people
try to keep up with it they try to keep up with the trend but is this normal can these behaviors cause serious problems and not only like to our own psychologies and like our own sense of self and selfworth oh I don't have that thing I feel bad about myself I'm talking about global problems like you know climate change problems you know sustainability ideals have you ever heard of them before and overc consumption kind of goes against that as as the time goes by and here's what it gets tricky overc consumption isn't just about buying
things it's about the emotions tied to it I've seen the video of this influencer online and her words resonated so much with me so I'm really enjoying this whole de influencing thing partially because I personally have a really bad spending problem which is like embarrassing to admit but it's true um I like bu new things I like feeling like my life is aesthetic and on Trend and I like adding novelty to My Life um which is fine like it's fine to buy new things and it's fine to treat yourself every once in a while but
when overc consumption is like your coping mechanism like it is mine not only is that so bad for like your mental health and the planet and whatever it's going to make you so broke and I know that from personal experience starting off with the worst offender expensive body wash in my opinion there truly is like not a bigger waste of money why do you need this it's body wash go to the drugstore get like an aino body wash you'll be happy your skin will be happy you do not have the money to be buying this
if you're like a regular person like me it's body wash and she has it right like I agree with her 100% there are some of us who experience those feelings and she shares this with her audience who can understand but learning how to control it and not get influenced by the influencers whose job is to influence you 20 per 7 is like a hard thing but it's worth it there also things like fear missing out the fomo feeling you see people flaunting their beauty halls and closets filled with clothing and suddenly you feel like you're
missing out you're not good enough you know something is going on and you're not the part of it there's also this comparison culture you watch in videos of someone else's normal skin care routine completed with luxury items that cost more than most people's monthly Rend and makes it makes you wonder if your routine is good enough let's see how much my whole makeup routine actually cost I'm slightly scared for this I start off with my glow recipe toner which is $35 then I use my tatcha dewy serum which is $89 oh my gosh after that
I use my tatcha deoy skin cream which is $72 next are the glow recipe do drops which are $35 then the milk hydrog grip primer which is $38 then my absolute favorite The Hourglass skin scent which is $49 and total is $760 which is absolutely crazy I just cringe with those videos a lot because people are showing something that only the privileged ones I would say get to experience and they leave us feeling like okay like is that no maybe that's the normal maybe that's the boundary or like the standard that we have nowadays maybe
have to live up to it when the reality is that it's just like the part of normalizing it like we have normalized the idea of over consumption just by people talking and voicing the problems with over consumption and but we still we still get stuck in this like normalization stage where we're like maybe it's fine you know it's my normal skincare routine that's what I buy them every day but it's not normal look at this like really is it normal like for whom and let's be real part of this is marketing like influencers try to
promote products to make them seem essential like you're going to die without that product you know unless you buy that you're going to die you know they know these videos are visually appealing and they tap into the dopamin headit that we all get from seeing something you know shiny new aesthetic and let's ask ourselves eventually is that healthy is that normal and these H Collections and Trends are making people feel inadequate making them spend money they don't have on things that they don't need and here's the big truth bomb most of what you see online
out there isn't real like some giveaways are fake if you think that those influencers are actually doing some giveaways and stuff most of us are fake some influencers only show their highlights not the clouded rooms behind their cameras like and that's the truth I've seen numerous videos from like really popular con creators I can guarantee you you're being lied to by the majority of beauty influences you follow because here I am doing my skin care routine you're probably thinking wow my skin looks so glowy it looks great I wonder what product she's using when in
reality this is all caused by a filter and that's everything you had to know it's not real and that's hard to accept and that's really hard to accept on I've always said is like you shouldn't meet your Idols a lot of my favorite influencers ended up being the rudest people I've ever met in my entire life even the ones that you think like nah they can't be rude like they're so nice the ones that I had the worst experience with were the ones that I was like oh there's no way they're rude in Parson cuz
they're just they just seem so authentic and nice nope I don't want to generalize so I'm not talking about everybody but a lot of the rudest influencers I've met were like influencers who were like part of like the beauty Community like the tutorial teaching how to do make like I don't know what it is they're just a lot of them are really rude I thought it was was just me but then I talked to like my other influencer friends and there was like certain influencers that we both met that we thought would be really nice
and they're like Beauty influencers and they weren't they were not nice I also noticed that they're kind of like weirdly gatekeeping like whenever I meet Beauty influencers if I have like makeup questions like that's like I'm like this is my moment shy I got to ask them now this is the best person to ask and they'll like give me super vague answers or just make me feel like I'm stupid for even asking and it's like girl I could scroll through your Tik Tok right now and find the answer to my question like and when it
comes to beauty related content there's so much in the skin care stuff like I just see these Trends every single week they're all new they're all new and have you ever seen this morning shed trend on Tik Tok I think it's been popular like in last year in 2024 the most interesting thing is that these people in Tik Tok just pretend to do this morning shed routine what's so annoying is that a lot of them are just like pretending to go sleep and then wake up in the morning or like you know I've slept so
well morning shot just like takes off her bundles or I don't know wow take something off her forehead all right good morning everyone I slept little last night um stop when she says I've slept well last night I'm like did she even sleep at all I don't really believe that she even sleeps like that like what obviously the constant need to buy stuff is totally real like for some it's almost like an addiction and social media makes it all downn worse like it's bombarding us with the ads with you know influencer accommodations with the trends
that change literally wickly but fortunately there are some people who are like against the trend of like over consumption core consumption whatever and I just respect those people so much like not everyone is caught up in this like cycle some people are in fact actively promoting underc consumption which is like a new trend I think and movement that your focuses on living simply appreciating what you have and consuming responsibly I don't need the latest headphones because my wired ones let me listen to the same songs I don't need the next it girl sneaker as long
as the ones I have still protect my feet there's no rush to decorate my home with dust collecting Decor when I could slowly curate secondhand over time I'm not rushing to buy the new Macbook when I've been able to repair and keep using my 2015 I'm not buying new containers when I have upcycled ones that can do the same thing and I'm not trying to make things like luggage look cute when it doesn't change anything about my trip reminder you don't need it K love you bye under consumption cor I do not like variety when
it comes to makeup I basically do the same makeup look like every day so here's my daily makeup let me show you what I do [Music] I watched a lot of these videos and they're just so inspiring when you hear that someone can consume this amount and they don't need thousands and hundreds of you know products like these people have right there like we've seen like these people can use and they show you exactly how to do that some people have been showing ways on how you can reuse your products reuse your skincare routine reuse
your damn shampoo you know a lot of us are throwing out there some shoo bottles I I used to actually do some handmade DIY stuff with these shampoo bottles after I've used them so even if we Ed the plastic from the skincare stuff and products I buy and it's incredible how some people are showing it to the audience what's so amazing about these people is that they stop normalizing over consumption they go against the idea that it's normal to consume everything you [ __ ] see on social media every single week on Tik Tok somewhere
someone talks about a new makeup product someone talks about a new cream or skincare product you have to buy and you have to buy it the go against the kind of Grail and really show people that it's not normal he this just needs to be said but if you were in your 20s it is not normal to own tons of designer things I don't own a single designer thing is not normal to go spend $200 at Sephora Ulta once a week it is not even normal to go out to fancy restaurants and drink multiple times
a week there's nothing wrong with those things but I just need to remind you that that is not normal as normal people do not do that okay you're not alone and social media is lying to you like my respect to those people so much rather than promoting the horrific consumption culture so many people do right now some are prevailing and giv the actionable advice on how to under consume and these are the real bosses I should say they show us how to declutter how to show up mindfully and how to make use of what we
already have so overc conception is a product of our times I think it's really per saturated by social media a lot by marketing you know by the comparison culture but it doesn't have to Define us eventually you have to remember that it's not all about having more it's about finding joy in less so that's what I want you to remember really um my phone fell yes I'm here bye
