have you ever noticed that sometimes your brain is just quietly nudging you to try doing things a little bit differently but because we're so conditioned to follow social norms we often ignore those signals and just end up doing what everyone else around us is doing and I know why that is when you go through life making mistakes and blunders and saying too much or doing too little or not following through on things you lack self-trust so when these natural urges come up to try things a little bit differently you ignore them because you think that
can't be right that's going to lead me down a road to failure again so I'm just going to follow what the herd is doing unfortunately what works for the herd rarely works for us in the end so for those of us who do think and live differently there is a real benefit to pause and just listen to what that urge or nudge is telling you to do cuz sometimes there is gold and then there mountains and that's what I'm going to get into in today's video this has been really top of mind for me lately
because I feel like this whole year I've been trying to follow rhythms and patterns of the herd mentality especially when it relates to my business I'm looking at what everyone else is doing and granted I'm experimenting and I'm letting it be messy I'm not getting overly attached to any outcome and if things don't work out the way I expect them to I'm not making it like a personal failure so I am listening to all all of my own great advice when it comes to trying things but the one thing that I think I've forgotten in
all of this is that the way other people do things doesn't mean that is right for me so I want to talk you through some of those this is relating specifically to business but I think this applies to any area of life and the takeaway here is that we've got to learn to listen to those quiet urges to do things a little bit differently based on what we know about ourselves and when we actually do that we sometimes end up creating amazing things like a beautiful life or a great business or we show up in
our job like the superstars that we are because we are creative Divergent thinkers but when we don't even give ourselves the self-trust to explore those urges we just follow the herd mentality and we're usually at the end of the pack and that is the unfortunate part so stick around that's what we're going to get into now but if you're new here welcome my name is car M Gill I'm an adsd coach and Creator and I'm here for the busy ambitious brains who need to do things differently but they don't trust themselves until today so let's
get into it here's a great example as someone who has their own business I am always trying to upskill and uplevel and there's people out there that do things in a way that I really admire and respect they've got a lot of Integrity a lot of experience and they're not bro marketers so I love following them I buy their courses I listen to everything they put out I follow their road maps and I'm not saying that I don't get anything from it obviously I've learned and applied a ton but here's the thing sometimes what I
admire most about these people is that they are so diligent and consistent and disciplined and they're able to just keep up with the the flow of things in a business which let me tell you can be an awful lot especially if you're a solopreneur like me so I follow their models and use their templates and try to do things exactly as they do them and typically that is an absolute recipe for failure because the truth is I can't be consistent on social media I can't wake up and always be camera ready or have the energy
to record things I can't plan out like months of content or business plans or anything like that because all of those things really overwhelm me I almost have to do things ass backwards and for the longest time I would ber rate myself for this I'll give you a perfect example the proper YouTube protocol call is that you do your thumbnail and your title first before you ever film the video because you want to make sure that you have something that's going to get a high click-through rate that people are going to want to see and
you got to do all this analysis my brain doesn't work that way I have to start with the message and the creativity first and if I'm not feeling it then I can't record it so this is something for example this topic has been on my mind for a long time and therefore I feel ready to record it and this is how it comes across authentically for me so if I started with the thumbnail and title first I have a feeling that the creative would either be lackluster or let's be honest it just wouldn't get done
so that's just one example where if I follow the herd it makes things more difficult for me to get things done in my business like you've got to manage it in a way that works for you and I think that ultimately is why I am so pro- entrepreneurship for adhders now caveat there a lot of adhders want to get into entrepreneurship because a they're afraid of getting fired from their jobs again B they can't stand their jobs or being told what to do see they can't follow a regular schedule or routine which listen I get
it I I get all of that which is why I do what I do I mean some days this is hard some days it really sucks but I would take this flavor of suckiness and hardness over my corporate career any day of the week and it's not about money it has to do with time freedom and autonomy the ability to wear what I want to wear when I come to work and be in the space that I want to be in and not have to work with people I can't stand being around and just having
the environment that I know works for me so that's why I'm very Pro on entrepreneurship and I feel like there's a lot of adhders that would agree with that sentiment and they would love to have their own business but they lack the self- trust or let's say executive function skills to actually get started because again we struggle with execution so if we are not listening to that voice inside of our head that saying if you want to execute you need to do it this way rather than this way if we're not listening to that voice
in our head then we're just never going to execute right so if you have ever tried to start a business or if you have tried a business and failed then I want you to know that first of all I've been there too and the majority of businesses fail right like 90% of first business attempts fail I think that's the stat don't quote me on it but no matter whether you're neurod divergent or not there's a high likelihood that you will fail in business but if you don't listen to how your brain wants to do things
then it's almost a recipe for failure or worse it's not a recipe for failure and you're successful in a business that you hate so instead of building a palace where you get to where what you want and show up when you want you've built yourself a prison and I know a lot of entrepreneurs that have done that you don't want to do it because building a business you hate is a lot harder to extract yourself from than having a job that you hate so now I've hopefully convinced you that there is some Merit to doing
things your own way and I'm going to give you a couple of specific examples especially as it relates to being a business owner with ADHD and the first one that comes to mind is consistency we all hear the business Guru say especially if you're doing an online business that you have to be consistent and that's how you build an audience and how they get to know like can trust you and then they buy from you if you can't show up every day at yada yada time and do your thing then you're going to fail and
while I don't necessarily disagree with being consistent I try very hard even though it's not in my blood I disagree that that is the number one business strategy especially online because I feel like people get to know like and trust you when you're authentic and when you show up and be yourself it has nothing to do with did you show up on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday at the same time and place in my view and the problem with prioritizing consistency over authenticity or value is that whatever it is you're producing it falls flat like
nobody cares it's boring you end up being one of those people on Instagram that dances to trending songs and poking up word bubbles so maybe it's just me but when it comes to people online that I connect with it has more to do with who they are showing up authentically than it ever has to do with how consistent they are the other thing that I think is really important to embrace is doing things messy which again comes back to this idea of authenticity I think that more and more especially with the onset of AI and
just everybody trying to be perfect on social media when you can show up and add value and be yourself even if it's not perfect as clearly I am not right now I can't begin to tell you the drama I've been having recording this video people appreciate that and they connect with it so so I know that a lot of my ADHD entrepreneurs have a tendency to struggle with perfectionism that the way that the vision they have in their mind for how they want to communicate and offer our product is not coming across because they lack
the skill or the professionalism to really articulate and communicate the value of what they want to offer and that can be very frustrating but here's the thing done is always better than perfect and sometimes doing things in a way that is not perfect is endearing and it's the reason that people show up for you time and time again because they can relate to you as a human being and when somebody feels overol or unreal it's hard to trust them or at least maybe it's just me it feels that way and of course when you do
things differently I.E your own way because your brain is wired differently you are going to find your people so much faster the people that think the same way you do value the same things you do and can connect with your authenticity and the way you see the world which is why it's so important to double down on owning your weird that's actually the title of a book that one of my business mentors wrote years ago but I just read it in the last couple of months and it was just such a refreshing reminder to do
things your own way especially in a world where everybody is trying to copy everybody else I think it's great to take inspiration and ideas from other people but you have to put your own weirdo spin on it show your freak flag and do it in a way that works for you and while I do think that success leaves some Clues I think I think this idea of finding people you admire and then reverse engineering everything they did and then following that plan step by step it doesn't work to get you to the place that they
are because you're never starting from the same starting point and you never end up where they end up so I think it's a better idea to look at someone you admire and get curious about what you admire about them what is it about their success that really stands out for you and is something that you would want to emulate and then from there ask yourself how can I do this in a way that works for me so rather than writing a business plan maybe you're audio recording your business plan on a walk which is very
much the way I do things or instead of using somebody's step-by-step content management plan maybe you do mind maps or use sticky notes or something else that works for your brain and allows you to articulate yourself in the most authentic way possible and is easy enough that you can repeat it and be as close to consistency as possible and when it comes to building an audience or connecting with your ideal customer again authenticity is going to beat out consistency every day of the week so maybe you show up like crazy on the days where you
have energy and on the days that you don't you bring whatever you can and make that good enough the beauty of being a business owner in this day and age is that there is a million ways to go about doing anything and consistency does not need to be your number one strategy trust me on that so here's my challenge for you right now whether you are a seasoned entrepreneur or you're just getting started you're feeling stuck look at whatever it is that's holding you up in your business right now and ask yourself is there another
way of going about this is there a way that I can do this that aligns with my strengths or circumvents my weaknesses so that I can actually show up and get this thing done in a way that works for my personality my energy and the way I want to show up for my customers asking yourself a question like that is going to bring you much better results than ruminating on why you can't follow somebody else's advice and get the same results that they do that is a no win question that will get you nowhere fast
now if you're resonating with everything I'm saying today and you are truly trying to build a business that aligns to who you are and how you want to show up I do have something that can help you do that this is a framework for building a business that is aligned to who you are who is authentic to who you are and leverages your strengths as the entrepreneur it is called the ad entrepreneur roadmap and I will pin it right here if you want to go check it out but I hope that what I've given you
today is enough food for thought that you can start taking a more authentic approach to your business so that you can show up and be the entrepreneur I know you can be so on that note guys thanks for watching I'll see you in the next video bye for now
