Look at all the buildings here. They are covered with television screens. Where are we?
Oh! This is Times Square and we must be in. .
. New York City. This is a major city in America.
It has the largest population of any city in the United States. Over 8 million people! That's a lot of people.
Over 800 different languages are spoken here. More than any other city or place in the world. New York City has been given many different nicknames over the years.
The most well-known being the 'Big Apple'. The city is split into five different areas. These areas are known as boroughs.
These boroughs are called Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn and. . .
Manhattan. Because New York City has been built across several different islands. Many of the boroughs of the city are separated by water.
Speaking of water. . .
what's out there in the middle of New York Harbor? Oh! That's the Statue of Liberty.
The Statue of Liberty was a present from France. It was given to America to celebrate the end of slavery after the civil war. The statue took four months to build and it's now one of the most iconic sights in New York City.
The island that the statue sits on is called Liberty Island. It's a popular tourist attraction. You can go inside the statue and walk all the way up into the crown.
Did you know that the Statue of Liberty wears a size 879 shoe? Those are some big shoes. Luckily it hasn't needed another pair yet.
The statue is green today. But when it was first built, it was brown. That's because it's made out of copper which when left out in the air for a long time, turns green.
Look over there. There's a boat! Oh!
That's the Staten Island Ferry. This is a free to ride boat. That travels from Manhattan to Staten Island.
Let's get on. Where are we now? Oh!
We're back in Times Square in Manhattan. Look at all these billboards lighting up the night sky. There are lots of people here, all rushing around.
This is a very busy part of New York City. Times Square is known as the center of entertainment in New York City. Visitors can go sightseeing or see a show at the famous theater district of broadway.
The Square has always been a very popular place for tourists all throughout its history. A long time ago, this area was called Longacre Square. The name was later changed to Times Square when the newspaper, the New York Times built its headquarters here.
Let's go somewhere new. Taxi! Let's get a yellow taxi cab.
New York City is well-known for its taxis. They can be found almost anywhere in the city. They are a great way to get around if there's not too much traffic.
The only problem is getting one to stop and give you a lift! Taxi! Wow.
Look at all the trees. Are we still in the city? Yes!
This is Central Park. This is a large urban park in the center of Manhattan. Central Park is the most filmed location in the world.
You've probably seen it in a movie. While most people come to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The park also contains a carousel, Belvedere Castle, The Central Park Zoo, and the Bethesda Terrace.
If you don't want to walk, you can go on a horse and carriage ride. These rides will take you all around the park. Let's get back into a taxi.
Where are we now? We are driving over a big bridge. This is the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. See those cables, holding up the base of the bridge? This design makes it a suspension bridge.
When the bridge was first opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It no longer holds this title. However, as you can see, it's still an impressive bridge and has inspired many artists and photographers over the years.
Let's follow these people. Where are they going? Oh!
They're going on the subway. The New York Subway is the busiest underground train system in the world. Nearly 3 million people use the subway every day.
Let's get on a train and go somewhere new. We are back in Manhattan. Look up!
What's that tall building? That's the Empire State Building. This building is a famous skyscraper on the New York City skyline.
It is built in the style known as Art Deco. The building has 102 floors. Most of the floors contain offices.
But the building is open to tourists too. Visitors can go all the way to the top of the skyscraper. At the top, there is a viewing platform.
From the viewing platform you can see across the Midtown area of Manhattan. Be careful it can get windy at the top! The Empire State Building was made famous worldwide by the classic movie 'King Kong'.
At the end of the movie, King Kong climbs all the way to the top of the building. But I don't want to say any more about the film as I don't want to spoil the ending. There are other famous skyscrapers in New York City, such as, the Flatiron Building known for its unusual triangle shape.
The Woolworth Building, one of the oldest skyscrapers in the city. And the Chrysler Building. Like the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building was also built in the Art Deco style.
At the time, it was a rival to the Empire State Building. What's that? Oh, it's my stomach rumbling.
I must be hungry. Let's stop for something to eat. But what should we have?
I know let's have a pizza. New York City is famous for its pizza. Italian immigrants brought pizza to New York City over a hundred years ago, and it has been a popular dish ever since.
New York style is a large slice of pizza that can be folded with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Hmm. That looks delicious.
Let's take a walk and work off that pizza. Where are we now? This is Wall Street.
Wall Street is in the financial district of Lower Manhattan. Two large stock exchanges are based here and several banking headquarters. There's a statue of a bull here too known as the 'Charging Bull'.
The bull symbolizes healthy market conditions. Let's keep on walking. This building looks brand new.
Oh! It's One World Trade Center. This is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the September 11th attacks.
This is now the tallest building in the United States, taller than the towers that stood there before. The building shows the world that New York will always rebuild itself, even after tragedy. On the site, there is also a museum and a memorial that pays respect to those who lost their lives.
Let's get back on the subway. Where are we now? This is a building in a part of New York City called Greenwich Village.
It doesn't look that special, does it? Hmm. But maybe it does look familiar to you.
That's because it was used in the popular television series, Friends. Even though the series ended many years ago, it's still very popular. People come from all over the world to see this building.
Does anyone want to grab a coffee at Central Perk? Taxi! What's going on here?
There are loads of balloons everywhere. Oh, this is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This is the world's largest parade.
People come out into the streets to see the balloons, floats and marching bands parading through Manhattan. Many well-known characters are turned into balloons, which can be seen high above the crowds. It's very impressive.
Whoa. Look at that balloon, it's huge! The first Macy's Day Parade happened back in 1924.
It was created by the US-based department-store chain, Macy's. Let's head back to the subway. How about we go watch some sports?
Oh! Look at this building! This is the New York Yankees home stadium.
The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team. Baseball is a popular sport in New York and the United States. The Yankees are considered to be one of the greatest and most successful teams in the history of the sport.
Let's get a hot dog and enjoy the game. Give me lots of onion and mustard! I hope you enjoyed your time in New York City.
