have you ever thought about how King David could be so undisciplined how he could go from killing lions and killing Giants to sleeping with his best friend's wife and cheating on his own wife what happened he's this huge successful decorated Warrior and then all of a sudden he's cheating he loves God and then all of a sudden all that gets thrown out the window with BBA well the answer is in 2 Samuel 11 the first verse this is the chapter where he cheats in the first verse it says in the spring of the following year
at the time when Wars began another translation says in the spring when kings go to war what is David a king what time is it spring what do they do in the spring they go to war where is David at home he became undisciplined because he had too much time on his hands he should have been at War young man you need to be at War if you have too much time on your hands you will become undisciplined the reason why we don't have discipline is because we have too much time on our hands we
need to pursue things that are going to take away our time but Alex you always talk about how we need to live a simple life and and have more time for the things that are important in life yes but true freedom is being able to do the right thing true freedom is not being able to do whatever you want true Freedom isn't being able to say I can do that I can do this I can go there I can I can play this I can partake in this that's not true Freedom true freedom is being
able to do the right thing at the right time left to our own devices left to our own flesh we will not decide to do the right thing we'll decide to do the thing that feels good and that's not Freedom that's slavery so how do we pursue the things that are going to take away our time I'm glad you ask we're going to talk about what things we need to pursue in order to become more disciplined and how to have the power to do it what's going on my name is Alex thanks for being here
if you want to learn how to grow closer to God grab a Bible subscribe and leave a like let's get into it amen the first thing we need to pursue man marriage Proverbs 18:22 the man who finds a wife finds a good thing she is a blessing to him from the Lord if you are struggling with lust 1 Corinthians 7:9 tells us pursue marriage it'll help you not give into sin now if you're living a life of sin it's impossible to be disciplined because you're going to fall into shame you're going to fall into this
guilt pattern and then you're just going to want to numb yourself or forget about the things that you've done so the answer to lust is what Paul tells us that is marriage and in Proverbs 18:22 it says marriage is a good thing that a wife is a gift from the Lord should we not pursue things that are good that God calls good things that are going to help us grow disciplined and not give in to our flesh of course men for most of you marriage needs to be at the top of your list and I'll
get into you know what it looks like to pursue a Godly woman in a different video but this seems to be your number one prayer every day God send me a wife you say that they are you say that marriage is good you say that a a good Godly wife is a gift from the Lord Lord give me that pursue marriage being married to lokani for 10 years I've learned so much about what it means to be a man I mean I've learned you know how to wash dishes I've learned how to you know do
the laundry or or sweep up after myself you know I I lived in a house with all boys and so it was easy just to let let our mom do that but lokani has taught me hey I need you I need you to be on your game I need you to be a man I need you uh to think about me before you make decisions these are all things that have helped me grow in my discipline just by having another person in my life that I am uh responsible to that I am um uh living
life with it's allowed me to put away the childish mentality and to walk in obedience to God through discipline marriage takes your time away all of a sudden you have to spend a lot of your life a lot of your time with another person and then this this from Marriage comes kids and you know I love what Tim Keller says Tim Keller says you know your life really doesn't change until you start having kids because when you're married you're just like on a really long date but when you start bringing other little humans into your
life you'll see your time slowly being taken away and through that you have to be more disciplined cuz all of a sudden you had 10 hours to do whatever you want now you have eight oh here's another kid now you have six oh here's another kid now you have one and so the more uh people you invite into your life the more commitments and Covenants that you enter into like marriage and children the more disciplined you have to become I've heard this quote about men they will not change unless their back is up against a
wall unless they've been cornered most of us have never been cornered most of us has have never been backed into a corner and said okay now I got to fight my way out marriage does that kids do that another thing that does that is work Colossians 3:23 and 24 says work hard and cheerfully at all you do just as though you were working for the Lord and not merely for your Masters remembering that it is the Lord Christ who is going to pay you giving you your full portion of all he owns now why do
we work because we're not working just for our boss we're not working for a paycheck we're working for the Lord and this tells us the promises he's going to repay you and how rich is Jesus how wealthy is Jesus everything is his he is going to pay you look at what he's done for us he's laid down his life he's given us his life should we not give our lives back to him through the work that we do when you are checking in at Starbucks when you are you know you know I don't know if
you're a mechanic or if you're in school or whatever whatever you're doing you're not doing it for a master on Earth you're doing it for your heavenly Master when you work there is there's payment there's reward from it if you're not married if you don't have kids now is the time to work there's going to come a time where you're going to need to be around your kids you're going to want to be around your kids they're going to need your presence your wife is is going to have a baby and you're going to need
to be around the house to carry the newborn to give her a break so she can get some shut eye I have a friend of mine who uh you know met his beautiful wife here on Mission here in Hawaii and during that time of him you know courting her dating her and even just the first couple years of marriage he learned woodworking he he learned the skill he acquired a skill now they have three kids almost four and he is Uber successful I mean he's he's doing great why during that time when he had no
kids when he had less responsibility when he was about to get married or the first couple years of marriage he was putting away the time putting in the work working double the amount of time so that now in the future he could slow down still work but slow down now is the time to work don't give all your time to video games don't give your time to you know because what's going to happen if you fondle the controller long enough you're going to end up fondling yourself it's just the way it is if you have
too much time on yourself too much time with yourself you're going to end up filling it like David did with ungod Godly UNG glorifying things undisciplined Behavior but if you say I'm not playing video games until I can barely open my eyes at night after getting off a double shift why not you don't have the responsibilities of maraging kids yet so Now's the Time to work two jobs Now's the Time to put in that extra work again we're looking for things that God says is good to take away our time so we can grow more
disciplined if you're married and you don't have kids or you're going to get married and you're already like I'm going to wait five years 10 years to have a kid don't do that kids are the work that you should be pursuing why kids are a blessing from the Lord God calls kids good God loves kids he provides for kids Alex we don't have have a house we don't make a lot of money so what they're his kids too he promises to provide I'm telling you guys with every kid that I've gotten I made more money
lived in a better situation and worked less I don't know how it happened I have no idea how it happened but I know God tells us to have kids to be fruitful and multiply so I just trusted him in every single kid that we've added I've worked less meaning I've clocked in less hours I've made more money and I've lived in a better situation because he provides they're his children kids will take away your time but in that you and your wife will be more creative more disciplined in how you spend time together how you
prioritize each other you'll be more creative and how you build this life and through that you'll grow closer together you'll grow deeper in love for each other and for the Lord the third thing that we need to pursue is is serving John 15 9-13 I have loved you even as the father has loved me live within my love when you obey me you are living in my love just as I obey the father and live in his love I have told you this so that you may be filled with my joy yes your cup will
overflow I demand that you love each other as much as I love you and here is how you measure it the greatest love is shown when a person lays down his life for his friends Jesus has laid down his life for you and I how can we not lay down our lives for others or for him pursuing serving is one of the greatest things a man can do pursuing laying down your life for others that is how you grow in discipline look at how disciplined Jesus life there is not a more discipline Ed person and
what did he do he laid down his life that is what serving is laying down what you want to help somebody else if we want to grow in the discipline of the lord we got to do what he does where are you serving serve your neighbors even if that just means going over and talking to them or mowing their lawn or helping an old lady across the street Serv in the church serve out outside the church serve in your community it doesn't have to be these big programs that you sign up for it can just
be simple not trying to toot my own horn here but one day I was just walking down the street and I noticed that this one old lady in our neighborhood she walks you know multiple times a day and there's this one like patch of the road that is like overgrown with grass and I thought to myself you know every time she walks past that she has to step out into the road putting herself in danger and instead of being able to walk on this like sidewalk of grass because it's too high and it's too like
crazy and so I thought to myself why don't I just cut it you know that way she can just be safe and I can't cut the whole neighborhood but this is a huge you know 80 yards in front of right across the street from our house and so took the took the lawnmower and just like cut it real quick and then she's able to walk on that that's serving that's laying down I wouldn't have done that 10 years ago I wouldn't have done that 15 years ago I wouldn't have been thinking about anybody else but
myself but when you see Jesus lay down his life for you then you start to rethink how you can lay down your life for others how you can live a life of service and the more you live like that looking to see where you can serve others you're growing in discipline the last thing that we need to pursue is exercise 1 Timothy 4:8 says bodily exercise is all right but spiritual exercise is much more important and is a tonic for all you do so exercise yourself spiritually and practice being a better Christian because that will
help you not only now in this life but in the next life too when you see a person who pursues bodily exercise you're seeing a disciplined person to put in the extra mile to do the extra rep to say I'm not going to eat that I'm going to eat nutrition that person is a person who is putting their putting what they want what their flesh wants aside to pursue what is right to pursue discipline Paul is telling this young Pastor Timothy that there is some value in physical exercise especially if it allows you to think
differently about how spiritual exercise spiritual practice is most important because that will benefit you in this life and the life to come and make it easy don't go out and buy a bunch of equipment get down and do I what I did I did the one punch man workout that's how I got started for the first like three months one punch man is uh this like random anime that I watch like two episodes of and in the first or second episode he just does like 100 squats 100 push-ups and 100 crunches and I think he
run like 10 miles but I didn't run the 10 miles uh I just ran like one and so do that every day every day and you will see um yourself growing more disciplined you'll see um that discipline is something that hurts but it's something that you can learn to love amen I love you thanks for listening let me know what part of this video stuck out to you in the comments let's get some good conversation going and with that said check out amen podcast.com if you want to support me and this Channel or or listen
