when you walk every day a change happens to you it's unexpected it's often subtle but it's profound if you're new to this channel hi I'm Dave I'm not a doctor it's important for you to know that I'm not a licensed personal trainer I'm a guy who's walked 19,000 steps a day since 2013 that's my daily average and I love walking so much that for almost the past three years I've been doing a daily podast walking is Fitness it's a 10-minute episode a new one every day that I record while I'm out walking like I am
now and the idea behind walking as Fitness is to encourage you to provide a little added motivation to take a fitness walk a walk for exercise and to stick with it so what kind of walking are we talking about it's important to Define our terms we're not talking about the walking that we do when we're in the grocery store pushing the cart stopping pulling something off the shelf putting it in the cart and then moving on to the next item while that's beneficial movement is beneficial that's not the kind of walking we're talking about we're
not talking about the walking you do from your car into work or from your car into the house or moving from room to room as you're doing chores again that kind of walking is beneficial but that's not the kind of walking that we're talking about we're talk talking about walking that is intentional we're talking about walking that has some intensity the experts say that if we're moving at about 3 to four miles an hour then we are actually doing exercise cardio exercise and so that's the kind of walking that we're talking about walking that is
intentional and really is for Fitness purposes and for exercise purposes taking a walk like that every day is going to produce a change that is unexpected that is subtle and yet is very profound and you might be wondering well why would I want to walk for exercise what's the point of that what's the benefit of walking for exercise well the benefits of walking as a fitness activity are significant you can lower the risk of an early death by almost half there's research that says those those who walk 7500 steps a day cut the risk of
an early death in half 7500 steps a day by the way the average person gets about 4,000 steps that's the walking we do without even thinking about it that's the walking from room to room from the house to the car from the car into work when you add about a 30 minute intentional walk every day if you're walking about 4,000 steps you're boosting that that step count to 7500 and you're lowering the risk of an early death by half you're also lowering the risk of some bad diseases heart disease certain types of cancer type 2
diabetes and dementia but in addition to the long-term potential health benefits you're also lowering Stress and Anxiety when you take a walk you're thinking better you can even be more creative there's research that indicates if you have a specific problem you're trying to solve a specific solution you're going for and you take a walk you're going to be 66% more creative than if you were sitting I mean that right there is a pretty great reason to take a walk but exercise is hard Fitness is hard even when it's walking and I think I think that's
one of the things that people get wrong about walking as a fitness activity they think oh this will be easy because walking is easy what you're doing what I'm doing right now this doesn't look hard well it's not hard this walk physically is not hard the difficulty is when we do it every day when we make a commitment sticking with it every day that's the hard part of Fitness that's the hard part of exercise because often what happens we get excited we think you know what I'm going to make this change I'm going to start
exercising I'm going to lose some weight it's a common reason for exercise and you're excited about the potential transformation and that excitement fuels the motivation in those early days but that kind of excitement can't last it never lasts and after a week or two you're no longer excited finding time for this easy walk becomes more of a challenge and then you step on the scale and that number hasn't moved much and now you're starting to ask the question why am I doing this what's the point of this why do I keep carving time in my
schedule to take a walk exercise is hard even when you're walking for exercise again that's one of the reasons why I started the podcast walking Fitness it's to provide a little added encouragement a little added motivation to get out the door essentially we're taking a walk together here's the change that happens and again it's unexpected although now that you've seen this video maybe it'll be expected it's subtle at some point down the road after you have a fitness habit maybe even some momentum maybe even you're starting to see progress on the goal to lose weight
or whatever to make some changes in how you feel and how you look and then you realize hey I'm doing this thing I stuck with Fitness I stuck with exercise because if like me you've tried this in the past you've tried pursuing Fitness you've tried pursuing exercise and you gave up I can't tell you how many actually I could tell you how many times I've started and stop but I think you would find that boring it's quite a few but this time this fitness journey I'm on now this started let me do the math 16
years ago and I've stuck with it and yes I've walked every day and here's the change that has happened to me in the will happen to you when you stick with Fitness when you stick with exercise every day you start to think differently about yourself that internal tape that is scrolling that is rolling the way you think about yourself it goes from I can't to I can to I am it improves your self-confidence because you chose to do a hard thing and you're sticking with it that's a significant change that's profound I've got if you
could see that one of the one of the things about walking through the woods is you've got mosquitoes and there was a mosquito oh well it's gone so when you walk every day when you stick with it when you do a hard thing it's going to change the way you think about yourself you're doing a hard thing you're capable of doing a hard thing that's a significant change and that's a profound change again the name of the podcast walking is Fitness would love to take a walk with you every day each episode brand new 10
minutes and it's recorded while I'm out walking just like I am now thanks for watching this video and until next week have a great week
