you watch a video about study tips try them and still get a bad grade there must be something wrong with me great news it's not you the wrong tips are wasting your precious time so today you're going to learn the overrated study tips and their better Alternatives hey team it's Amy I was valoren and earned the highest GPA ever in my District's history all while sleeping an average of 8 hours per night even though my migraines would make school really hard that's because I use the highest return techniques and habits basically I had a low
tolerance for things that were wasting my time so today I'm sharing the common study tips that I didn't use in what I did instead remember that this is all my experience used for inspiration only if it works for you it works for you learning is personal so as much as you would like me to debunk study myths the truth is even the best scientific papers cannot prove your study tip wrong if it works for you lock in because at the end I'll be sharing with you my top strategy for performing well on tests it's crazy
how so many people including yourself are probably not doing this let's go studying in the morning never in my high school career did I wake up earlier before school to study and in college if I had the option to push through and study just a little more before bed versus waking up early to do that work I would always pick doing it before falling asleep so if we slash that overrated study tip the alternative is let your learning marinate this means put your studying before bed instead of after you wake up why is this alternative
so fancy like you're marinating meat in the fridge overnight well that's exactly it when you marinate meat with flavorings and seasonings for a longer time those will sink in deeper making the end result when you cook the meat even juicier and an overall better result the same thing happens when you learn new information and you let that marinate in your brain overnight I kind of understood this on an intuitive level because I was just used to doing this also because doing work before falling asleep stresses me out less because I'm certain I have that thing
done before school starts the next day but there is actually scientific evidence woo wow when you study before bed your mind starts to train itself like a muscle in your body however instead of repairing proteins while you sleep your brain instructs neurons within the hippo campus to collaborate and convert information to memory so even if you don't take my word for it you can listen to pocket prep and low burrow University and other research papers out there that say the same thing our favorite tomato the popular Pomodoro method for those who don't know the Pomodoro
method is essentially setting a timer for 25 minutes and then after those 25 minutes the timer goes off and then you get a 5 minute break which is another timer so you continually do 25 and then 5 minute increments I was so surprised at how many people swear by the pomodora method that a few years ago I actually downloaded a Pomodoro Timer on my laptop but I actually never opened it a single time that's because I feel like there's a certain resistance to structuring your work too tightly like it just seems too restrictive and because
it actually takes me about 15 to 20 minutes of focused work before I get into a flow State Flow State means that instead of forcing yourself to concentrate on that task your focus and your productivity just automatically starts flowing out of you all of that attention being directed to that particular task or activity we definitely want to achieve Flow State to be more efficient and to make working hard feel easier so that's why I think it's crazy that the moment scientifically you get into Flow State 5 minutes later ding ding the Pomodoro Timer goes off
and you're forced to take a break thus the replacement for this overrated study hack is breaks after gains I'm in my poetry era I'm a poet basically time is arbitrary but what we should value is actually making concrete progress thus take a break only after you really truly honestly feel accomplished you can take a pause pause after you've made a gain whatever that means to you that's why it's so important to think of the real effective study tips this way it must be customized for each person breaks after gains teaches you to use completed problems
absorbed information and actual wins as an indicator of progress rather than time past because we all know that 15 minutes doesn't always mean 15 minutes of real focused work stationary sorry this no hate to those aesthetic study tubers out there I understand why you exist your stuff is very pretty but I do not think all those pretty little colors are necessary she's just jealous cuz she's bad at making things pretty whatever colors and tools and school supplies you used should be practical and serve you so when I do color coding it serves my organization when
I pick a pencil or a pen I'm just going to pick the one that is most robust and gets the job done if we focus too much on aesthe I and romanticizing our lives or Tik Tok trends like how to look like that girl that's just performative productivity not actual productivity so the replacement is to stick to the basics or use an iPad huh just an iPad no not just any iPad but an iPad that feels paper like did you know that you can write on an iPad where the screen feels like it's paper wow
I didn't know that either but it's really amazing so thanks paperlike for sponsoring this portion I originally heard Ali abdal talk about paperlike and he wasn't even being incentivized to so I thought hm I've got to try this I was never a big fan of screen protectors because they were so shiny so I've been trying paperlike and I've been using it ever since because it's the coolest cream protector I've ever used basically it uses a technology to make your screen feel as close to paper as possible by adding resistance so you'll have to feel it
to believe it but it just does not feel like that slippery iPad screen anymore which has several benefits including less muscle fatigue when writing and better precision and control if you like drawing or writing on your iPad like sometimes I like using free form with all the little fun tools like watercolor and crayon to doodle it's very therapeutic paperlike makes it a more enjoyable experience I think it's a super cool invention because I really hated how much paper I would go through when in school and have to dig through things in my notes so I
always wanted to change completely to an iPad but I just couldn't get used to feeling like how slippery things were when I write I felt like I did get tired and I didn't know why I get more tired but it's because of less resistance so so paper like solves that problem and can help save more trees so what could be better than that something special about this screen protector in particular is that it's matte so it will also reduce the reflections I got the notetaker collection which comes with two little grippies and also the cleaning
kit I think this is perfect for students who like to take notes on their iPad during class or writing down notes doodling right now I use my iPad to tutor my students thanks so much to paper life for reaching out to me and honestly helping me discover a cool new product that I'm going to use myself and thank you to you for giving me this opportunity to discover new products really check it out especially if you want to level up your iPad game rewriting notes active reading people love to talk about rewriting notes but this
is one of the most passive forms of studying you can have right after reading your textbook over and over again I don't usually like to share prescriptive strategies with acronyms but I actually really like this one the sq3r active reading strategy is actually very similar to what I did but put into a nice fancy acronym basically when you're reading you want to survey question read recite and then recall this way you can first get an overview of the information with s then you question to actively engage with what you've learned finally with the three Rs
it's almost like parallel recall that I talked about in my efficient studying video and I think this is a faster more effective way to retain the information the five minute rule is a common tip for procrastination but again like we've said in the beginning time is arbitrary working on a task for 5 minutes does not guarantee that you already feel like you're on a roll so instead follow the one accomplishment rule when you want to procrastinate on a task take the smallest piece of that task the lowest hanging fruit if you will and just aim
to finish that this way you feel like you made concrete progress and you will feel a real sense of accomplishment which likely will drive you to continue completing that task all right good job if you made it this far you a real one the best tip of course also has to do with your mindset and that is you can feel confident about anything given that you put in enough preparation I've seen so many students go into test feeling unprepared well funny enough it's simply because they didn't prepare enough when I ask the students do you
feel like you prepared as much as you could though they usually say no so it's no wonder that they don't feel confident the best test prep strategy is this treat your test like a presentation when you have a big important presentation you're going to practice that as many times as you can to get it as close to perfect as you can right you want to replicate the actual circumstances and the stressful environment of that presentation before you have to do the real thing thus use that way of thinking for test prep to you have to
replicate that high stake situation when you're timed and after you've done all the studying you think you can do that way you can really see as closely as you can how you would actually perform on the real test many people myself included fall into the Trap of not being honest with how much preparation we really need and therefore under preparing that's why I love these Alex horos quotes I'll put them up I recommend you read each of them but especially to manage anxiety I prepare thoroughly this ensures I perform well without stress since my tips
are holistic this mindset applies for each thing you're doing you have to be your own coach training yourself for that next game that next presentation that next test if you wanted your player to perform absolute best they could then of course you would try to replicate that higher stake situation right now when it doesn't matter as much great job this was a shorter and sweeter version as sweet as these nice smelling flowers that fun fact I got from my mom on behalf of my dad for a Chinese Valentine's Day you know what if you got
here comment below remember to smell the roses I think that's a reminder all of us need let me know if you like this kind of video give me a big thumbs up that would help me out so much thank you thank you for all your support remember to check out paper like to level up your iPad game Link in description and I'll see you next time once there was a person with no arms they ran into a swarm of bees then frantically he ran and fell into a pond unfortunately he drowned so the town's people
were very sad for he was a very loved guy they built not one but two tombstones all around him around these tombstones they built or they added some patches of grass oh no no no that was flowers then around the flowers they added a big field of grass then to make it even prettier they surrounded the grass with two flowing streams oo taada what do you see hi a team if you're going through something tough whether it's School college applications or want to know how I implement the advice that I share in my videos well
congrats on getting to this last part of the video thanks so much for sticking with me here this is an update about my mini Vlogs so for the past few months I've been documenting at the end of my videos my application process when applying to Harvard Business School and MBA program at Harvard I've already gotten rejected from HBS back when I was a senior at Caltech but I am trying again this process I really hope to show my raw emotions process and tips for getting through college applications and giving yourself the best chance possible today
is actually September 5th and we submitted my application yesterday last night woo so I have a ton of footage about my process reviewing the application and essays so many times the lessons I had the mistakes I made that I caught along the way and some really valuable advice for anyone going through something similar you might be surprised at how long we spent and the changes made in just the last Sprint before submitting the application I felt a bit restricted to keep putting these at the end of my videos number one because they're late compared to
when they actually happened and number two because I don't want the entire video to be that long so for those who are interested in my application journey I have compiled all the rest of my Vlogs into a format showing everything all the struggles all the little wins that led up to me actually submitting my HBS application last night I am quite scared about getting rejected as I shared in some sad moments in my vlog but overall it was a very fruitful journey of applying that I know will be inspiring to you so really please check
it out with the link in my description it is special to you whoever is interested because it is an unlisted video link only available to those who know what's up I will keep you updated with my results on if I get the interview how the interview goes and ultimately whether I get accepted hope hopefully oh my gosh I'm nervous but you know I did what I could I think it will just be super interesting for you to see how I like I said execute my advice in my real life and a Pursuit that I'm struggling
with myself thanks so much a team and I will see you in my application vlogs
