you are looking at new images of the man wanted for shooting and killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson yesterday morning in New York City these surveillance images were taken at a hostle where the shooter was staying as cbs's Jared Hill reports there are also some new clues about a potential motive and we want to warn you video of the crime is disturbing a sign advertising a $10,000 reward for information leading to the shooter of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson is taped to a light pole outside a hostel on New York City's Upper West Side died
police also released these images from the Hostile showing the suspect's face it's the clearest look so far of the man the NYPD has been hunting since Wednesday morning we will not rest until we identify and apprehend the shooter in this case police are using a trail of digital breadcrumbs to track Thompson's Brazen killer found at the crime scene words written on the shell casings deny defend and depose similar to the 3DS of insurance a phrase used by opponents of the industry based on the evidence we have so far it does appear that the victim was
specifically targeted but at this point we do not know why cameras at a Starbucks captured enough of the suspect before the shooting to run facial recognition police say he paid in cash CBS News law enforcement contributor Rodney Harrison says the suspect is experienced with a gun just take a look at his stance and how he had the gun pointed out he knew what he was doing uh the gun jams he's able to deal with the malfunction so it looks like he's very proficient with uh how to use a fire Harrison says the NYPD solves about
87% of the cases in this part of the city so it may only be a matter of time for this one Jared Hill CBS News New York we want to show you some new video now coming in just within the last 15 minutes look outside the doors there you can see what's believed to be the gunman walking out of a subway station we're told that this video was taken about 30 minutes before the shooting joining us now former CBD first Deputy superintendent and Rio it's been nearly 36 hours since the shooting we'd love to get
your take on this case do you believe the shooter could still be in New York City I believe he probably is yeah and you know there's a network of cameras in in New York City that's probably better than any in the world and they're able to track him pretty pretty closely with those cameras we have clear images of his face do you think how are police going to use facial recognition so facial recognition is a big help but a couple things have to happen in order for facial recogition to work and first of all you
have to have a very clear image of the person that you're trying to identify uh the images that I've seen are pretty good but secondly he has to be in a database he has to have a previous criminal history and be in that database in order for facial recognition to work is it the same situation then also with DNA because we're hearing reports that there's a smudged fingerprint right so but if he doesn't have a criminal record or his DNA is not in the system right does that help or is it just another clue that
you don't have a connection to right and and DNA helps in in one of two instances is first that can help in this situation if his DNA is recovered from something they set a Starbucks cup a water bottle if his DNA is in the database they can compare the DNA that they recovered from the scene to the DNA in the database and come up with a name if he's not in the database they can also get him once he's in custody they can compare the DNA on that water bottle to his DNA and confirm in
fact that that is the same person absolutely and there's one more thing about DNA these um ancestry type databases that people pay uh Polie law enforcement has been able to use those and access those in the past and so he may have just submitted a DNA sample into Like An ancestry database that could help identify him as well okay we have about a minute left deny defend oppose was written on in Sharpie on the shell casings what does that tell you it kind of makes you think that the motive might be something related to an
insurance claim that was denied maybe for him maybe for a loved one and his family for our offender um it it certainly kind of seems that that may be the motive we won't know the motive for certain until he's in custody but it certainly kind of points in that direction right Anthony Rio former CPD first Deputy thank you for your expertise in these matters as we follow this case pleasure thank you
