they bought it so about how long would you imagine on average it takes to write a movie and you insult me what the hell is the matter with you anyway I mean it depends it famously took Stallone like 3 days to write Rocky I Got a Friend for you while in glorious bastards took Tarantino a decade for St alone usually take times that they can be worthy of getting a producer's attention or project greenlet if it's not already commissioned or self-produced then they're edited revised thrown out Rewritten revised again often enough not even by the
same person whose script it originally was Cameron this is my ninth sick day if I get caught I won't graduate any of that do you know what my diastolic is totally normal you're out of your mind unless of course you're John Hughes life moves pretty fast who became famous for his speed rights if you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it neither would I Ferris Beer's day off which I'll talk about today took Hughes less than a week to complete and by some accounts just two nights finishing the script
just as the writer Guild was about to go on strike and just 36 hours after pitching the movie to Paramount with nothing but the tagline a high schooler takes a day off from school how could I possibly be expected to handle School in a day like this now what's so interesting about Hugh's process is that his first drafts would routinely be his only drafts and therefore the the version of the movie he'd shoot never had one lesson even if they were way too long or would have probably benefited from a rewrite whatever miles we put
on will take off Ferris Beer's first cut Ran 2 hours and 45 minutes and didn't work at all revisions to the script therefore weren't done on the page they were done on set a nice stretch job with the TV and the bar and in the edit and that's where editor Paul hirs comes in come on love a little Paul hirs is a legend this guy edited Star Wars in the 70s blowout in the 80s Mission Impossible in the '90s but working with John Hughes he had his work C out for him between the length of
ber script and the amount of coverage Hughes likes to get when he shoots her had a lot of material to work with to organize to trim down and especially in this case to rearrange hold your water for a second I got another call which we'll come back to but you thought we wouldn't have any fun for instance this scene in the restaurant originally had this whole extended middle sequence of Cameron ordering and eating pancreas by mistake sweet BRS uhhuh and what might that be pancreas they shot it and removed it in the edit but not
in so simple ways just chopping it out and moving on really bothers him instead hsh intercut this scene of Ferris in the restaurant bathroom with these shots of Cameron making faces at the table those faces are remnants of that that original sequence reactions to the pancreas some before he eats it some after but by removing any specific mention of the context or of them ordering it it becomes just this funny fun interplay power of the edit thank you yes sir the restaurant scene is probably one of the few instances of really tight scene to see
an inner cutting in Ferris buer the best advice Paul hch ever got about editing was you should only ever cut when necessary and as he developed his own style he fine-tuned that into the following make every scene as simple as possible but not simpler the trick is knowing when it's too simple or too complicated and that's the reason we end up with these great very wide multi-compositional unbroken takes in the final film captured on super 35 unusual in that time I can't believe you did that I can't believe you went on a goddamn bra float
the scene where they go back back to pick up the car all one shot super lovely nice job thank you this shot in the police station with Jennifer Gray and Charlie Sheen in the background just great at least today or back in the day in theaters at the time on TV or on home video after paned scan I mean well yeah but anyway trimming fat inner cutting scenes taking scenes out not cutting when you don't need to that's a part of any edit that wasn't Ferris belo's problem the problem was that when they first showed
the film The Test audiences into the studio people didn't like it they didn't get it they didn't connect with it what do you mean nothing good we've seen everything good we've seen the whole city we went to a museum we saw Priceless works of art we ate we ate pancreas the fix well a bit unusual but actually it turned out to be very very simple Hughes and hirs went back to the editing room and realized the vast majority of the movie scenes they were good they were great they were in completely the wrong order now
the funny thing about Ferris Beer's day off structurally speaking is how almost episonic it is how modular it is all taking place in a single day it's book ended at the beginning by Ferris beer waking up deciding to play sick Gathering Cameron and Sloan and picking up the Ferrari not a real Ferrari by the way and then at the end by them returning the car sort of Ferris running back home and slipping back into bed before his parents get back but everything in the middle is just a day of sightseeing of just being doing loving
Chicago this movie for Hughes was designed to be a total love letter to the city oh my God and because of that structure and because Hughes doesn't write in a lot of costume changes that meant scenes could be arranged and rearranged in an unusual usually unhindered [Music] way the original sequence of events went something like this parade scene restaurant scene traffic jam then museum with the ball game and trading room scene and whatnot thrown in somewhere now in early viewings no one liked the museum scene in particular probably the vibiest scene in the movie in
part because it was this really somber sequence to end the day with plus it was originally cut to this a rhythm M classical conversational sounding guitar piece that forced the whole thing to be cut in this very non-metrical and irregular way now it didn't take hsh long to realize what may seem obvious now that the parade scene was the strongest piece they had and simply couldn't be topped it wasn't written to be but in the end it had to be the finale and the traffic jam should precede it because its reasoning can be governed by
the parade and the museum scen that therefore had to come earlier and they even swapped the classical guitar stuff with a Smith song recut the scene and suddenly audiences were responding favorably to the movie and to the museum scene in particular for the first time HH claims because of the reshuffling Hughes because of the music change but in any case it worked and the movie was a hit now I didn't talk about character in this video whether you love Ferris beer is a character Char or you think he's entirely unlikable is up to you but
in Hugh own words this really isn't the movie about ferris ferris beer do you know yeah he's getting me out of summer school ber is a sort of superhuman Mythic Sage figure who's perfect and doesn't have or need an arc of any real sort I'm so disappointed in Cameron 20 bucks say he's sitting in his car debating about whether or not he should go out classically speaking this is Cameron's story he's the one who grows and ultimately confronts the True Villain of the movie his dad a character that we never even meet that's the conflict
that Spurs the whole plot you're not dying you just can't think of anything good to do so anyway if a character analysis script analysis sort of thing is something you'd be curious to see leave me Aline down below there's a lot I could say until then I'm Danny Boyd thanks for watching hey everybody I just want to thank everyone who's shown their support through my patreon these past couple of months as you know I've been facing a lot of copyright issues lately and with your help I'm hoping to reach a point when that stuff just
doesn't matter anymore when the channel can be financially independent of AD revenue and I can make videos completely for you and for me and not at the mercy of a total mindfield of a claim system so if you have the means please do consider going to
