Video Transcript:
Hello, sharks. My name is Robson Calegon. I am the owner of the company Alfa Look's.
And I am here today willing to earn R$5 in exchange of a 30% stake in my business. But before I tell you about this great business, I'd like to tell you a little about my background. When I was 13, my mother passed away.
And I had no other choice but to live on the streets. As time passed by, I started selling candies and flowers on the streets. And I've met a person who made car products.
And this person involved me in some of his businesses related to car products. Eventually, he stopped working with these products, and he taught me how to make them. And one day I went to buy the base materials in one of the places that I was used to go to.
I met someone there who taught me how to make hair gel. After a while, I started to sell it in hair salons. I'm in this business for 16 years now.
And I am very passionate for what I do. Today we have the factory "Ação Beleza". We have "New Barber", which is one of our brands.
We have "Hard Hair", another brand of ours. And we have the big brand, "Alfa Look's" that has many types of products. And I'd like to make you a surprise and present our products to you.
-Thanks, man. -Thank you. -Thank you.
-Thanks. -Thanks. -Thank you very much.
-Let me see. -Thank you. -Thank you.
-Thank you. -Thank you. -Wow.
Thanks. Turn, turn. How much did he ask for?
I didn't get it. My mate. My mate, Robson.
-Did I hear R$5? -I didn't hear you. What is your offer, Robson?
That's it. Believe it. It's R$5 to take 30% stake.
I understand that you have a factory and within this factory, you have many brands, right? The offer is to partner up with the whole factory or only Alfa Look's? Not only in the factory, but also in the brands.
What is the 2016 turnover? How much was it? R$9.
8 million. -It's only getting weirder. -This is weird.
-Exactly. -What is it like? What's its size?
Is it a factory? Does it have all the licenses? What is it like?
-How many employees? -All licenses. -CETESB, Anvisa.
-What is its size? Today it has 700 meters square. -Where is it located?
-Guarulhos. -Our own building. -How many employees?
A total of 56. Who are your competitors? Other brands that make almost the same products.
-The difference is. . .
-Factories? Yes. The difference is on the work we do.
And about the quality, is there any plus on any of your products? Our product is top quality on the market today for sure, for the price we sell it and for its texture, the ingredients we use. And do you make brands of other barbershops in your factory, or not?
I can't make it due to my. . .
I can't meet the demand I have today. Do you need to expand your factory? -Exactly.
-Robson, what's your main channel? Our main channel today, that gives us more profits, is the barbershop. Its a lot of barbershops, right?
Right. Today we have, on average, with no exaggeration, we have around 7 thousand affiliated barbershops. Within this turnover of R$9,8 million, how much does it come from the barbershops?
-Seventy percent. -Seventy percent. How much was your profit in 2016?
Around R$2,5 million. For a 10 million turnover, you've got 20%? Yes, a net profit.
Why do you want to sell 30% of your company? Actually, I need an investment to the company, because today we have a R$950,000 debt. But the most interesting part is having you on my business, because it's very beneficial for me to have you as partners than to keep trying to do this alone.
How did you get this debt? This debt comes from taxes. Did you stop paying taxes?
I didn't pay taxes, but it's not a debt that is still. . .
-It's not an active debt. -Active debt. It's being paid.
-Did you ask for installment? -Exactly. Robinson, I've got a question.
Wait, how much are the installments per month? Around R$15,000. For instance, this week we had.
. . the ICMS debt charged by a registry office, we had to pay R$300,000 only this week.
-Do you have partners? -It's only me and my wife. -Only you and your wife?
-Robson, I think you didn't come to get R$5, but so far it's R$1 million to take you out of this hole, right? Exactly. This R$700,000 to R$900,000 debt sums up all interests, fines and so on, or is it the amount of what you didn't pay?
Yes, this is the amount I didn't pay, the amount I didn't pay is smaller. So this amount includes everything. Because there is this difference.
If you didn't pay R$300,000, today it is R$900,000. I wanted to clarify that, to know the amount. When you offer 30%, you're offering 30% of the debt as well, right?
So we are also buying that debt. Exactly. If it's a million, I'm taking R$300,000 of debts.
It's the R$5 you're asking plus 300. And do you have any debts of suppliers? -I do.
-How much? Around R$200,000. Do you have labor debts or anything like this?
-No. -Only taxes? For us, to make it clear, this is a priority.
Whatever we have do in order not to harm anyone who works for us, we do it. So your debt today is 700 of taxes and 200 to suppliers on a short term. -Exactly.
-What is the offer? You want a partnership with someone who has intellectual asset, and this person will have to give money eventually. Camila, it has money.
Let me just say it, if you have R$200,000 of expenses and you make R$800,000, What's your COGS? Around 45%? -Yeah.
-So, if his COGS is 50%, he needs 400 of working capital to manufacture per month, plus 200 to pay his suppliers debts. -He needs more. -This is the minimum, right?
He needs more, that's right. He needs more R$200,000, 400, 600, 800,000. He needs R$800,000 of working capital and he needs to parcel this 800,000 debt.
You're the one saying that. -Let me hear it from Robson. -I did the math.
What are you offering? Today we need a working capital. How much?
Around R$800,000 to a million. So the proposal is 800,000 to 1 million, plus the debts, -for 30%. -Exactly.
So it is not R$5. The point of R$5 or a million isn't important today. Robson, it is important, because you're not in a situation where you have no debts.
We've got to a conclusion that you have taxes debts and you need the same amount in working capital to go on. So I think the R$5 was cool, because it got our attention. But actually, when we start digging, we understand that your business today needs around R$2 million to go to the market.
-And to keep rolling. -Exactly. So, my initial proposal really was R$2 million.
For the same 30%. I'm giving my position. Robson, congratulations, man.
You have a remarkable philosophy of work and of business attitude. Now, you need someone to give you some know-how about manufacturing and industry. I'd enter with a small amount on a future business, which would be franchising your business model.
So, that's why I am out. I think you're the portrait of how in Brazil, the taxes are complex many times, especially for businessmen to perpetuate their business. I wish your business were healthy enough, without its debts.
That's why I'm out. Robson, let me say something about what she said. Be careful with your focus, man.
You've got a lot of things and ideas, but the excess of ideas isn't helpful. Especially now with your cash flow. And this thing bothered me.
That's why I'm out. Thank you. I think I've seen around 90 pitches on this show.
And I was rarely touched by anything like your project. What you've done is remarkable. Unfortunately, I am not into the male market or barbershops.
So that's why I am out. I just wanted. .
. to know something, sorry, but I am curious about something, man. .
. How did you manage to do what you've done, getting out of the streets? Seriously, you said.
. . -I can't.
. . -You have to be proud, man.
Actually, I can give you an answer, he works hard. You look like someone who has always worked hard. And that's what you're showing us, -at least to me.
-And work with love. I will give you my position. I really like your business, I'm already a partner of a barbershop, Corleone, I am there with them.
But besides money, much more than money, you need help even on an organizational level. You need help implementing some working tools. I think that, with a team, I could help you a lot.
I'm not so sure about what you really need. I'm in with your offer of R$5 for 30%. And the only thing I say is that I really need to get in and understand it all.
Because I don't know if it is actually R$2 million that was calculated here. Or if it's only a million, if it's R$800,000. -It's hard.
-No problem. So my offer goes with that. I just really need to get more data so I don't be surprised by something different from what we're talking.
João, I accept your offer. Thank you very much. There are only two people.
. . I talked about it before.
. . There are only two people in Brazil that.
. . That I'd like to take a picture with, you and Silvio Santos.
Thank you. Thank you. Let's do this.
I'd like to, if I could, explain to you that. . .
in the past, we could take the work permit when we were 14. It was the only document I had. This document was the only thing I had.
And. . .
I had one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, two T-shirts. Slippers of different colors. Look at where you are.
And I had. . .
I had a friend who owned a diner and he used to borrow. . .
He used to borrow his shoes so I could look for a job. I used to take showers at public fountains. I've tried to do this business nine times.
People have always said I couldn't make it. They've always said it. You deserve applauses from everyone, right?
-Thank you. -Congratulations. -Congratulations.
-I want a hug. If you need me, count on me, okay? Right?
I want to meet your wife. -I want to hug you, too. -She is downstairs.
-Congratulations. -Thank you. -I'm your fan, man.
-Thank you, Shiba. -I'm your fan. -Thank you.
-Go get them now, man. -Good luck. -That's it.
-Thanks. You know that, from now on, your business will change, your lives will change. You already earned a lot, R$10 million a year.
But now you'll have the expertise of one of the best experts in market of Brazil. Why are you a big fan of João Apolinário? Because of his history.
He invested in a dream, he believed his dream. And I am also like him. I believe in my business, I believe in my dream.
I have no words. Well, you've found the guy, right, João? -Thank God you got in.
. . -Thank God.
-You're lucky. -Yeah.
