[Music] this is me recording vocals in my home studio over the past 10 years I've been through it all from recording vocals for covers for my own original songs or microphone comparisons and I'm grateful many of you enjoy my singing but the truth is my setup for recording vocals plays a huge part in the final result as a beginner you're going to make a few terrible vocal recording mistakes but it's not about how many mistakes you make it's about how quickly you fix them today I'm going to show five of the worst mistakes I made
when I first started recording vocals and if you think you've mastered vocal recording you've probably made one of these mistakes and you don't even know it yet [Music] so the first mistake I believe many vocalists make is positioning themselves the same distance from the microphone every single time I've noticed in many home Studios the vocal microphone is always set up and ready for recording and even though it's a great time saver to do that having your microphone set up the same every single time limits you from using the distance between the mic and the vocalist
for a more creative recording the truth is if you want a specific vocal sound how you position yourself behind the microphone plays a very big part if you want to record loud yelling Rock vocals or imitate a crowd standing further from the mic gets the best results if you want a quieter more intimate vocal get yourself super close to the mic a pop filter does help you keep a good consistent distance from the microphone in general but try not to keep the same distance every time [Music] the next mistake I personally used to make a
lot in the past was rushing the vocal recording process and not prepping enough I know exactly how it feels when you get that vocal idea or lyric in your head and all you want to do is record it and it's fine if it's just a quick demo but for a final vocal take you're wasting your time if you don't prep first make sure you are truly happy with the lyrics you wrote set up your microphone properly check to make sure your audio is not clipping if your room is not well acoustically treated use blankets or
anything you can find to dampen the sound this will only take 10 minutes and the difference it makes is huge if you don't want to set up blankets every single time you can get acoustic panels and I'll make sure to link the ones that I use down in the description below the third mistake I personally used to make that I still see some of you making is blaming your microphone for the sound of your vocals yes microphones can be faulty and they can be legitimate issues with any manufactured recording product but at the end of
the day most microphones from 80 and up sound good enough for Quality sounding vocal recordings many of you that are subscribed to this channel have seen me compare budget versus expensive microphones and most of you can't tell the difference like I said your microphone can be faulty but in most cases it's not so from now on no more blaming the microphone this next vocal recording mistake is one I see many beginners make if you are recording vocals dry without any effect plugins on the track you are limiting your vocal performance being able to hear a
little bit of EQ compression Reverb And Delay makes your vocal takes feel more like a performance rather than a dry boring vocal recording in a booth remember your vocal is still a dry recording because these effects plugins can be removed afterwards so if you want a better Vibe and performance when recording vocals make sure you use effects [Music] and the final mistake all musicians make or have made is not using distrokid to release their music the truth is no matter how good you get your vocals to sound if you're not sharing your music with the
world you're locking up your talent and skill distrokid is the best way to get your music in front of people through Spotify and apple music it literally only costs you 20 a year to upload as many songs as you want and if you want to pay even less my link in the description will get you seven percent off when it comes to music production mixing and even vocal recording we all make mistakes but remember it's not about how many mistakes you make it's about how quickly you can fix them [Music] foreign
