president-elect Donald Trump has named his campaign manager Susie WS as his white house chief of staff it's the first key appointment in his new Administration Global Affairs editor John Lions joins us now from Washington DC John G the first many people would have seen of Susie Wilds was probably on Election night when Donald Trump was making his victory speech and he was calling people forward and uh he called out Susie W it took a fair while for her to emerge it looked like it was the last place she wanted to be with kind of up
up front um and she kind of called for her offsite it was no no I'm not going to talk he's my offsider he can come forward and say a few words and she kind of quickly went back into the into the crowd there uh so what can you tell us about Susie Wilds well Joe I think that very anecdote you've just mentioned um says a lot about Susie WS is she does not like to be uh in front of the camera she does not like the spotlight on her she's very much a backro person um
he did call her out and she really didn't want the glare um she rarely speaks publicly she's your classic political operative um she's feared um in Republican and other circles um she's a really apparently a very hard um political operative she's credited with having helped see off the Ronda santis threat to Donald Trump um and um that's the first big appointment she will be the chief of staff as you say she'll be the gatekeeper and so for the thousands of people trying to get through to get access to Donald Trump uh Susie wild will decide
who gets through and who doesn't she's seen as intensely loyal to Donald Trump and after his first term where obviously he fell out with so many people um ideologically they were similar but in the end a lot of them just couldn't work with him in terms of his temperament he's had those four years in the wilderness people like Susie Wilds have seen as having stuck with him so he's putting loyalty now he can choose obviously from a wide range of people he's putting loyalty as his number one Criterion and so enter Susie Wilds yeah John
I read a piece in the Atlantic about the management of the Trump campaign it just came out in the last week or so and say it was kind of that they had this piece at least was saying that Susie Wen John laser I think his name is her offsider had been able to manage him quite well relatively in terms of what he was saying he wasn't being uh too outlandish in what he was saying but then a couple of other people were able to get into the campaign and on the plane with him and he
started going off past a bit uh but she was able to bring him manage him back uh in the uh toward towards the end there so uh yeah yeah have you heard about her relationship with General C because there was some uh consternation between Donald Trump and him through the the uh the campaign as well but they were were able to keep it together well that's right uh Joe um part of the challenge of Donald Trump like with any leader any president or prime minister is managing them those sort of jobs you're on a roller
coaster anyway um because of the you know the disappointments the ups and the Downs clearly Susie WS has both a good political brain and an ability to know how to manage Donald Trump who I suspect is not the easiest person to manage um and she's obviously done that and given the campaign given the comprehensive shellacking that the Republicans have given the Democrats you'd have to and then there'll be phds and books written about this campaign about how successful it was how clinical how brutal and although he did sometimes go off script he kept hammering the
key messages economy cost of living border security um and certainly he he um you know put very florid terms on a lot of these things particularly the the migrant Invasion the enemies within but the same themes of economy and border security kept coming over and over again something like climate change vers virtually didn't exist as an issue and in this Trump presidency climate change will have virtually no no importance and you know for four years the the the powerful United States will if if we can judge Donald Trump on his record have virtually no nothing
to do with trying to mitigate the effects of climate change
