it's not really a secret but I am preparing for my first triathlon it's an entrylevel Triathlon meaning that I will swim for 300 M I'll ride my bike for 9 miles and I'll run a 3.5 mile run like 5K basically so I'm preparing for this Triathlon and part of the preparation involves me riding my bike almost every day right so I have a a bike that I can ride outside now road bike um but I had an indoor trainer during the winter so as I'm riding my bike these days I I I've started to reminisce
on the times when I was in college and right after college when I first started getting seriously into cycling right you know as a kid you ride with your friends but right around my senior year in college University I started getting more serious into cycling so I bought a bike and I invested money into it and I remember this is maybe a year after I graduated from University my friend called me one day one morning and he said hey Tiff you want to go riding today and I said yeah let's do it we rode a
lot on the weekends he said all right Tiff um but this time we're going to do a more serious ride up a mountain I said oh okay I was always down for a challenge he said now this mountain Tiff um coming down is going to be a little bit tricky so I got off and said okay yeah I'll meet you there no worries so we get to our location and it was Mount SEO in Huntsville Alabama and so we ride up the mountain and again you know when you're riding it requires a lot of um
leg work right your hamstrings your your um your thighs everything is burning right so we get to the top and you're like yes okay the hardest part of the workout is done and he looked at me and said Tiff here's the thing we're going to go down this mountain I said yeah smooth sailing he said the only thing is we are going to hit speeds that we've never hit before and I was like explain he said we're probably going to hit 40 m an hour on our bikes now 40 m an hour seems slow when
you're driving a car but when you're on a bike with wheels tires that are this thin I want you to think about it it's to road bike the tires are this thin and you're going 40 miles an hour passing cars there were moments when we were coming down the hill where we were passing cars that's how fast we were going he said Just remember avoid all the Rocks you know just stay focused so even though coming up the going up the mountain the hard part was our legs were burning going down the mountain was harder
because we had to mentally Focus even more we had to be aware of our surroundings even more we had to make sure we knew when to break when to release the brakes when to lean in when to lean out so I remember as I was going down the mountain was it exhilarating woo yes indeed it was but was it also a bit nerve-wracking yes indeed it was when you're passing cars going down this mountain on a bike with tires this small this thin you're thinking to yourself Lord please don't let there be any rocks Lord
please be with me as I'm maneuvering through these cars and going down this mountain and I got to the end of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain we both stopped and we looked at each other and said Woo we made it and we laughed this is the message I have for you you're on this journey right you're on this journey as you're learning English right and in the beginning it is extremely tough right you're working different muscles you're trying to memorize all these grammar rules memorize all of these words and expressions and then
you get to what feels like the peak where you're able to exp express yourself right intermediate level and you think ah okay it's smooth sailing now you're going downhill intermediate Advance because you can still you know how to ride you know how to speak right but you're learning new things and you actually have to focus more it's not requiring the same physical energy as it did when you were a beginner or a beginner intermediate but now it's requiring different skills you have to focus in a different way so for you my friend Upper Intermediate advance
level English learner I want you to remember that as you're on this journey there might be moments where you feel like things are happening fast or you feel like you don't know what's going on hang in there stay focused and realize you will get to your destination and I'll be there with you I'll talk to you next time
