Doctor Roberto Yano, Cardiologist. Hello heart friends! How are you?
I am Doctor Roberto Yano, Cardiologist and Pacemaker Specialist. Many people are unaware of the dangers of lung diseases. This is a group of pathologies that have a high impact on quality of life and also from an economic point of view.
A person suffering from severe respiratory disease is often unable to even continue working, for example! The lungs are the organs responsible for bringing oxygen to our tissues and eliminating carbon dioxide through breathing, which is what we call gas exchange. Bronchi are the structures of the respiratory system that ensure that air reaches our lungs, more precisely in the lung alveoli, where gas exchange will actually take place.
When this system has its function affected, symptoms and diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, COPD, pneumonia, the much-feared pulmonary embolism, appear. In addition, they can have several causes such as infection by viruses, bacteria, fungi; exposure to irritating substances such as cigarette smoke or dust. Even genetic lung diseases can happen!
Did you know? But now that you know your lung, let's go to the 7 most common symptoms that may indicate lung disease. Come on!
First symptom: the cough. At first, we know that coughing is good for health! It is a reflex and natural action of the body to rid the respiratory system of any foreign substance, mucus or particles that were absorbed with breathing.
So coughing is a reflection of our body's everyday life! But depending on the type, it can indicate even more serious problems and problems! So it's important to stay tuned!
Cough is one of the most common symptoms among respiratory illnesses and is one of the main reasons why people seek medical attention. Therefore, it often ends up becoming a challenge for the doctor to make a correct diagnosis. It is important to pay attention to duration, for example.
Is it a more acute condition that lasts four weeks? Or did it become something more chronic, lasting more than eight weeks, for example? Another important thing is to notice if the cough is dry, does not contain secretion, or if the secretion is yellowish, greenish.
All of this the doctor, your Pneumologist, will ask you! Cough can arise from an inflammatory, infectious, allergic process; it can indicate diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, flu, even tuberculosis! Smoking is also another serious factor for the occurrence of cough, mainly due to the accumulation of foreign, toxic, irritating substances for our airways.
But let's go! Second symptom. The second symptom is phlegm.
Phlegm sucks, but it's an important part of our immune system. It is composed of water, salts, fats, rest of cells and some other substances. Our airways are coated with a transparent secretion that retains impurities such as dust, bacteria, it has a protective action!
When the pathways are attacked by viruses, for example, the flu, the mucus changes to try to expel this invading agent. The phlegm can have different colors and through them, we can already have an idea of what kind of infection and whether we should be concerned or not. Normally it is transparent and in a virus infection it usually remains that way.
If it turns green and yellowish, we probably have a bacterial infection. There are cases in which the secretion becomes much more mucous, intense, with the appearance of egg whites; this type can be found in asthmatic people for example. There is also that brown phlegm, which is more common in people who are smokers or exposed to large amounts of pollution.
These, of course, are more dangerous conditions where a person is more likely to develop serious lung disease. Sometimes, mucous secretion can even be accompanied by blood, which is what will lead us to the third symptom. But first, are you already subscribed to the channel?
Have you clicked the bell to receive all notifications? Guys, guys! 80% of you are not subscribed to the channel!
So, after watching this video, subscribe to the channel, click the bell to receive all notifications! And if you like the video, of course, at the end don't forget to leave your like too! But let's go to the third symptom: it's phlegm or coughing up blood.
This is also a sign to be alert! It can happen because of a prolonged cough, people who use anticoagulants, even respiratory infections, acute lung edema, bronchitis. But don't get anxious thinking about serious possibilities like these!
Usually, these bleeds occur in young people, usually from a wound in the mouth, nose, throat, for example. These are by far the most common causes of bleeding. Or even, as I said, from prolonged coughing that causes dryness in the airways.
But, in persistent cases, or in which the blood is abundant, that bright red, then we have to consider that it is something more worrying, that something more serious could be happening, like you have tuberculosis or pneumonia; or even, suddenly, a more serious condition, a tumor or lung cancer, for example. In that case, it is logical, always consult a good Pneumologist or a good General Practitioner, when you notice blood, especially if you are experiencing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, fever, tiredness, back pain, weight loss. But let's go!
Fourth symptom: excess nasal secretion. So, changes in temperature, air humidity, presence of dust, pollen, smoke can trigger increased mucus production. But, increased nasal secretion can also be a lung symptom, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, the flu, for example.
In these situations, it is also common for nasal congestion to occur due to inflammation of the blood vessels, increased runny nose, sneezing. Excess nasal secretion will cause discomfort and may even aggravate respiratory illnesses, if you already have any of them. But, did you know that Clínica Yano is now here in Indaiatuba?
So, we are here near Campinas, near São Paulo, so now you can come in person to see me here, in Indaiatuba; we are now in SP. But let's go! Fifth symptom: it's the throat clearing.
Throat throat, that feeling of phlegm in the throat. The throat clearing, which is even neglected because it seems light, deserves attention from the beginning, that bad feeling. Generally, what we call throat clearing is very common to be related to smoking.
So, smoking causes defense cells to concentrate in the respiratory system and this causes inflammation and irritability here in the throat. Clearing your throat is an attempt to combat the accumulation of these particles, these harmful substances. It also appears after flu, colds, due to the greater concentration of defense cells in the airway, decreased functioning of the eyelashes, which are those small hairs that have the function of defense.
Other more serious diseases that can also cause prolonged throat clearing are tumors, chronic lung diseases; so also keep an eye on these symptoms! But let's go! Sixth symptom: is shortness of breath.
In medicine, we call shortness of breath dyspnea, which is a feeling of difficulty breathing. The frequency of breathing increases, causes discomfort, accompanied by a feeling of shortness of breath. People who have frequent lung diseases usually have dyspnea that gets worse during exercise, because during exercise, the body produces more CO2, and consumes more oxygen.
If the lung is not working properly, carbon dioxide cannot be eliminated, giving that feeling of discomfort, that feeling of shortness of breath. And, regarding the causes of shortness of breath related to the lungs, there are several, from pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia, once again; COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; asthma itself. .
. So, in case of shortness of breath, always seek immediate medical attention! Don't be curling up, having a bad time at home!

And finally, shortness of breath is usually accompanied by rapid, wheezing, which is the seventh and final symptom here in our video, also known as hyperventilation. This hyperventilation can also arise due to an anxiety disorder, for example; but it can also occur due to pulmonary diseases, asthmatic bronchitis, pneumonia. If it is accompanied by weakness, dizziness, cough, chest pain, then these are warning signs that you have to be even more aware of!
It is important to consult a pulmonologist whenever wheezing appears, especially if it is frequent, does not improve even by standing still, at rest. So, folks, if any of these symptoms appear, especially if it's linked to a person who has risk factors, like a person who smokes, for example, or a person who has asthma or a person who has bronchitis. Ideally, tests should be carried out to identify the cause and start early treatment and the most appropriate treatment possible!
You saw then that each case is a case! When in doubt, always look for a professional. And if I made you more worried than confident, know that diagnosing the vast majority of lung diseases is a relatively simple procedure.
In the anamnesis, in the physical examination, and sometimes, in a simple x-ray, the doctor is already able to make the diagnosis! But for that, of course, the ideal is that you always look for a good professional, that professional you trust! Remember that some lung diseases are no joke, so you have to take care!
Just as you take care of your heart here with me, you also have to take care of your lungs , which is one of our noblest organs! OK people! So I'm staying here!
