When is the best time to take Ozempic, Trulicity, Monjero, or Bydureon? Hey everybody, it is your friend here talking about a question I get asked a lot in my clinic. When is the best time to take my once a week GLP-1 medication, which includes Ozempic, Trulicity, Monjero, Bydureon, you name it.
While your doctor is always the best person to ask for specific advice on when to take each type of medication, but I'm your doctor too, right? I can give you some general advice. Not a personal one, but I can give you some general advice.
There are some consistent rules of thumb that you can follow. Taking a medication that has a long half-life might give you some freedom when it comes to what time of the day you take it. For example, if you take the medication once a week and it has a long half-life, just like those once a week medications, typically after the fourth dose you will have pretty consistent medicine levels in your system.
So it won't matter whether you take your doses at 8 am on Monday or 6 pm on Sunday, you are still getting the same thing because you have consistent levels in your system. However, starting a new GLP-1 medication on Monday when you are heading to work may seem like a great idea, but you may be in for a nasty surprise. Why?
Because it can take up to 48 hours for the powerful side effects of, for example, Trulicity to kick in. So, if you don't want some explosive diarrhea disrupting your 9 to 5 the very next day, it is best to start your medication on a day without plans or obligations. Don't let your workload get in the way of an effective and comfortable work week schedule.
So, your new GLP-1 routine should be starting at a time when you have some free time in the next few days. If you accidentally miss a day, that happens a lot, right? Don't fret.
Just make sure to jump back into your routine as soon as you can remember. As long as the next dose isn't less than 48 hours away, you should be able to get back on track without a hitch. Skipping one day won't set you back too much, but it is important not to make it a pattern.
Just do your best and keep moving forward. So listen up. While it can be really tempting to take those meds no matter what, if the side effects include vomiting, don't do it.
Because some people just keep vomiting and they say, "Oh, you know, I lose weight on this medication, I'll keep vomiting. " Not a good idea. The warning about kidney failure due to dehydration is some serious stuff.
Okay, so medication can diminish your appetite, which is great, and also make you puke like nobody's business. And if your blood sugar is already high, that is a surefire recipe for dehydration. So just say no to vomiting meds.
So if you're vomiting, don't take it. If you take any of these meds and your back is aching, don't panic. That's also a side effect.
It's not your kidneys. Don't worry. The kidneys don't hurt in kidney failure.
So it is typically a side effect of a medicine which has no rhyme or reason, but it's typically like a muscle pain in your flank area in the back. It's like the universe went, "Oh, let's make this experience just a little bit less enjoyable. " And added an extra helping of back pain to the mix.
Not very fun, huh? But hey, at least it isn't anything serious, right? So I guess it is time for me to go.
I think I talked too much. You guys keep telling me, "Keep it short, keep it short, keep it short. " Well, don't worry.
I'm leaving you with plenty of mystery. We have only scratched the surface in this conversation. And although we have come to a timely conclusion here, there is still so much more left to be explored with these medications.
I know a lot of you are on them, so you hide it or not. I know you. You love those medications.
Most of you do. And most of you also have trouble affording them. Most of you also have side effects.
But anyways, knowing is the power. Knowing what you're doing is the most important thing. And until next time, stay healthy, stay happy.
