on a historic day for the United States with the inauguration of Donald Trump let's take you live to Washington DC where in the coming hours Donald Trump will be sworn into office as the 47th president of the United States with JD Vance taking the oath of office as his vice president well Mr Trump has already reaffirmed his commitment to carry out the largest deportation program in American history and that he's going to enact a series of executive orders within hours of taking office ahead of his inauguration during a wide ranging speech at a rally in
Washington he told supporters the United States was about to begin a new era of prosperity whilst restoring patriotism and Law and Order Our North America correspondent Nami ikbal reports God bless the [Music] US Donald Trump is back where he wants to be reclaiming power at noon the curtain closes on four long years of American Decline and we begin a brand new day of American strength and prosperity dignity and pride his bombastic style remains a crowd pleasa I think someone like Trump comes around once in a lifetime I mean uh when you look at the man
who everything was thrown at him not only about the peach impeachment one and two and all the law fair and he's still standing so that says a lot about a man I think with the 2016 election when he got elected in through 2020 he did a good job was faced with a very hard challenge with Co um how does anyone deal with that having never experienced it before but I think he did the best that he could how to get some real leadership back in this country start bending over backwards for everybody else let's bend
over back for Americans thousands of Donald Trump's supporters are here to celebrate his return to power this is a happy crowd unlike four years ago a mob loyal to Trump broke into the US capital in support of his false claims the 2020 election was stolen he's promised to Pardon those convicted other big promises include carrying out mass deportations and ending Global Wars the weather has forced Donald Trump's inauguration inside the capital the first time in 2015 5 years he won't get the crowds he loves to see so he plans to hold another rally and we
are going to make America great again this year marks 10 years since Donald Trump first announced his Run for the White House and his return underlines what once seemed impossible Trump has dominated American politics and will continue to for the next 4 years Nami Rick Bal BBC News Washington let's speak to Dr Leslie vinam Mori who's the director of the US and America's program at the chattam house policy Institute Leslie it's good to see you thank you for joining us here on BBC News what do you think Donald Trump's reelection means for the world generally
I don't just mean economically but more diplomatically well we are going to have a you know very vocal uh very determined um quite uh powerful at home that matters for foreign you know American presidents have inordinate power when it comes to foreign policy but when you've also got Congress uh behind you that makes your power even stronger he's won the popular vote so I think for the rest of the world they're going to see a president who has a very specific view of America of its interests um a determination to play pretty tough with the
rest of the world to really address the big problem problems of of War and Peace in uh in Ukraine in the Middle East uh it potentially to take a very tough stand on China that's what we've anticipated and yet you know clearly president Trump has a um a certain kind of affection for talking with uh strong leaders he's already spoken with President XI we've seen what looks like a a form of reversal on The Tick Tock ban U still to be negoti of course but you know it is a a moment of transition which really
puts um the us into a very clear box of saying to the rest of the world that there will be demands it will be um a very tough ask that you know America's interests have always come first for US presidents but I think the way of asking for that communicating that and trying to achieve that is going to be one that is you know Lac with demands um and and lacking to a degree in the kind of diplomacy that perhaps um people might desire he has talked of course about introducing tariffs how might other countries
react to that if he does it yeah well there has been an ongoing flurry of debate about what to do uh whether to retaliate um or whether to charm I think most countries you know the the first on the list Canada Mexico and China Canada and Mexico are America's two most important trade Partners um so it's you know it's tariffs against uh friends and partners not just against adversaries which is the really tricky part of of Donald Trump's economic agenda and the response that we are you know likely to see certainly from Canada is one
of you know targeted retaliation uh where Canada hits back hard with its own tariffs and they're looking to Target um parts of America that where Republicans are in charge so that Donald Trump's you know friends across the United States suffer and the theory is that they'll put pressure on the president to roll back some of those tariffs but you know what we know I think what people are debating is what are the conditions that come with those tariffs are they just there to change uh the the trade balance between the United States and the recipient
or are they there to get more um if it's just about changing the trade balance I think many in Europe are thinking about what can they buy from America can they buy more gas can they buy more arms um or is you know is there a broader demand and I we have seen um it said and I think it's likely to be true that the the US president is also going to use those tariffs when it comes to Europe to say you've got to um spend on the security side it's going to be linked across
that domain from economics into security it's going to come right to the heart of the question of what happens in the support for Ukraine what happens in the broader picture for Europe's security for um spending in order to contribute to uh to the broader agenda of NATO um that linkage politics is is really very Central and I think Europeans um are aware of that they've certainly been planning and thinking for it but we all know that there are very significant domestic constraints across Europe certainly here in the UK on spending more we've got you know
elections ahead uh in Germany so that the domestic constraints are serious but people have been preparing Dr Leslie vinam Mori from uh chassam house good to talk to you thank you very much
