Jude Law on Being in the Star Wars, Harry Potter & Marvel Universes and New Show Skeleton Crew

our first guest tonight is about to make a the jump to hyperspace he chaperon a handful of Galactic Goonies in the new series Star Wars Skeleton Crew new episodes premiered Tuesdays on Disney plus say hello to Jude [Applause] Law well how are you I'm very it's very good to see you I haven't seen you in quite some time too long you still are handsome very handsome you too do you um do you uh do you c as an Englishman do you celebrate Thanksgiving or yeah aded Thanksgiving I love it you do love it I've been

I've been here in the states for the last few years at this time of year and invited to join uh families for Thanksgiving friends of mine and uh I love it I love the food you know it is there's a lot of pressure on Christmas in the UK because we don't have Thanksgiving and uh We've adopted Halloween now we love Halloween that wasn't the case when I was a kid right um but there's a big gap between CHR Halloween and Christmas and so you feel like Thanksgiving lets a little of the steam out of the

like just out of the pressure cooker interesting I never thought about it that way and you know there's there's no gift giving so it's just about being together and eating and I I I like both those things yeah that's what are what are your top Thanksgiving items to eat turkey you like turkey I do like turkey if it's prepared well it's delicious I like uh I like sweet potato okay and I this year I even tried sweet potato with uh uh marshmallow on top oh yeah yeah that's very American sweet potato right and uh I

like a bit of the cranberry on the on the turkey oh all right so you're really I mean I just Gorge I like that you're embracing it many don't many don't even though it's kind of the easiest holiday to understand truly you sit and eat and and and give thanks sit and eat and give thanks and it's kind of rehearsal for Christmas because it's the same meal you're more American than a lot of Americans in a way true are you excited that the MC rib is back I I heard this rumor I'm I'm delighted have

you ever had a m i what you're talking mCP is at McDonald's they have this thing called a MC rib and it's like it's you know it's like a rib meat and they you they still have the MC oh of course we have the McMuffin we when you when the McMuffin is gone we're all gone okay if you hear there's no more McMuffin that means America has ceased to exist yes worse than closed we've actually just fallen into the Earth do you have Black Friday back home yeah oh you do oh yeah so you got

the bad stuff I mean everything yeah everything you want to give the UK T is that right yeah cuz I know Halloween is yeah is one of those I remember seeing e when I was a kid and there's that whole section and I was like what are they doing really what are they all dress up there's like what's that yeah and then and then attempting it a couple of years later and being told to get lost by most of the people walking around going trick or treat right trick or treat you're talking about get out

of that's very interesting black fiding seems like you wouldn't want that though do people fight each other in the stores like we do here uh I'll have to check out that I'm not sure I may start that that would be a fun thing to get going yeah you know as far as I know's responsible culturally for for fighting on Black Friday fighting on Black Friday fighting for especially it's fun when you're fighting over a toy like for your child like like Cabbage Patch Kids were something like something like 75 people were murdered over Cabbage Patch

Kids in the 80s yeah like that was like a thing they make a movie about a a dad who was it a was it a there lot of movies about no no no about a dad on Black Friday trying to get a tour anyway probably yes and if not they should and if they did they should remake it immediately right or now it would just be the dad on the toilet with his phone ordering it on Amazon now I I want to say this and you correct me if I have this wrong because I've done

almost no research to um I think you're the only actor who's in the Marvel Universe the Harry Potter universe and now the Star Wars universe is that that seem true I mean I'll take it but I don't know if that's true pretty sure it's true I've thought I get a badge or something I hope I do you should get something you should get like free admission to every theme park in the world yes is what you should get we were we were uh uh launching Skeleton Crew last night at Disneyland and I hadn't been in

about 20 years oh wow it's a lot of fun that place is going to do well of those three I had a ball of those franchises which were your kids most excited about uh geez that's that's tricky yeah uh because I I read them all Harry Potter so they kind of they the idea that I stepped into the the cloak The Dumbledore uh was a thrill I mean I mean har the Star Wars world has a very particular Affinity with me and my eldest son and I have a friend in London and my dear friend

Johnny Silman who who almost shed a tear he was so moved that I was going to in Star Wars really yeah he still hasn't text me was he the first guy you called and he sure he's he's so overwhelmed he's passed out somewhere did he ask you for um information on what's Happ everyone does oh yeah my the the the the best way forward is just say nothing to anybody nobody no not even your family no no they know nothing oh really because because if it you know it's like a dam if it you get

a if it leaks it PS it's like I I I just better that I just said nothing does somebody sit you down is there like a person who's in charge of telling you the rules of Star Wars and how to there are several folks yeah are they the same as the Marvel people no no no no no uh they are they are Gatekeepers for the world of Star Wars the law the rules uh and they oversee costumes and fittings and and and suggestions that I may have on a prop they're like that doesn't work like

for for example with the costumes no buttons you never see any buttons is that true Star Wars everything is either tied or velcroed and buckled but no buttons and no Pap notic that why no buttons it's just a rule and no paper no if you think about it you've never seen paper hold on a minute this is crazy yeah it's true it's true and here's another thing a lot of the shots a lot of the shots that they use are still not limited but inspired by and they don't want to break these rules uh how

Lucas shot the original um so for example you know some some sci-fi films you know they'll pass through glass or they'll whiz around the space they don't do that because they they still want the language of the cinematography to be similar to the rest of the cannon I'm still on the paper right now I'm still like I'm now like is there toilet paper in Star Wars world or is Luke using like his robe or I mean like the belt around I think they have I think they have Japanese toilets they have Japanese toilets it is

funny because yeah everything's still made of metal and it's kind of a little bit Rusty everything's always on a on a monitor right or yeah yeah hologram your friend knew about that what is his name Johnny Johnny he knew there was no paper Les Johnny he's going to beside himself that he's getting such a mention um no I don't I don't know that Johnny knew that Laura dur told me that and I have to think about this make sure I have it right that when she was shooting the Blaster yeah that um she was making

the PE Pew sound of course and they had to tell her to stop making the sound yeah did you do that I think I might have done it and here's another thing so so blasters don't have kick cuz obviously I've I've used weapons in films before and sometimes you have to add a little bit of a kick pretend and so I was doing that with the Blaster then first of all no pew pew okay sorry no kick just point and squeeze and oh sorry I wasn't mean so someone someone corrected you on that oh yeah

I think no pew pew and no kick you kind of know what show you're on when someone gives you that direction yeah yeah no pew pew no pew pew right no pew pew and yet and no toilet paper it doesn't seem to really they don't go hand in hand that way together all right well let's take a break Jude Law is with us Star Wars Skeleton Crew is his show and he has a movie called The Order we'll be right back let me know when we're ready to jump [Music] okay ooh almost there I can't

Canon goes back to you know late 70s and I was eight seven eight years old and I just thought it was such a genius idea to make the protagonists of this children yeah and you suddenly get to see the universe through their eyes the Jeopardy's real the awe the Wonder the innoc but um it's also a great opportunity to watch it with your children should children be flying uh spacecraft that is a very good question that my character asks himself over and over and over again and you will see there are a couple of Great

Moments you see that's the other thing that they I my character doesn't really have uh uh parental abilities he's and and you get a sense that he's had not had much of a childhood so he just treats them like adults and and he doesn't understand why they're crying for their mom and they're hungry I'm like fly the spaceship like you know take the plaster we got these bag you know so there there's there's a lovely friction in their relationship he's just like come on get on with it your character's name is j j o d

d uh j o d oh j o d okay all right cuz I think it was just like Todd and they just added a little curve to it and you know which is my dog's name which is kind of like Todd I mean J jod is more like oh yeah it's kind of a play of God than or Zod yeah j z okay all right I think an extra D makes all the difference there cuz yeah you got Luke and you got Lando and then you got J it's not quite it doesn't have the punch

I'll give you a little secret he goes by he goes by many names he so so you you'll learn as he different people know him from different I would go by many names too of my name was J for sure is he a is j a Jedi I can't tell you that you can't he is they said what he is force sensitive was the ter he's sensitive which sounds he has force force sensitive is like lactose intolerant it's like you know Force sensitive means he has the it means he has the the the potential to

use the force potential to use the force when you tell me you can't tell me um does that mean you means I can't you know tell is it possible that you don't don't know no no I know oh you do know yeah I did the show okay okay all right well sometimes that's for the next season oh I see oh no for you to find out most of what we're discussing will be revealed see over the eight I do want to talk to you about your movie The Order which is really really good this is

and it's based on a true situation terrifying true story that occurred yeah 40 years ago in uh uh the Pacific Northwest up in the Pacific Northwest um in the 80s the what happened exactly there um the FBI uncovered a series of uh bank robberies and uh uh Brink Matt uh uh heists that were basically financing a white supremacist movement um and they had a seven-step program based on a book called The Turner diaries that they aimed to take over the country um and this this book The Turner diary is turned up um actually as an

inspiration of Timothy MCV and was indeed found in Janu on January 6th with the insurrectionists wow so we they're a little sensitive they're a little Force sensitive right now show the a picture of uh Jude in in the movie there you are you got a you got a beautiful 80s mustache there is that your idea or something they ask for um well you know the the the agents that my character was based on all have mustaches oh and and all the research I did all the agents I spoke to who worked for the bureau in

that period all have mustaches and the photographs of all the agents that I did through my research all have mustaches so it just seemed a given I think you get a badge a gun and you have to grow a mustache is it a glue on mustache or is it you grew it that's a nice mustache you can't be using glue on ones because every time you smile it pings off so it it's it's easier to to grow it did your wife my PO wonderful wife put up with it yeah did she like it or no

well I i' I'd just done a film in which I played Henry VII so I had this huge beard uhuh uh and then I shaved that off and kept the Tash and then the summer that I'd finished I'd shaved it off and we we're we're on holiday and I I catch her looking at me this one afternoon she's like and I I I I'm like what she says I just remembered you're really attractive and it's like poor love she put up with me for nearly a year with all this I oh listen imagine if she
