Video Transcript:
you've set your SES on a score of 140 or higher on the dualingo English test but the read and complete questions are leaving you with trouble and now your dream University or perfect job could be at risk hello I'm Francis from last minute English today we're looking at the read and complete questions in the dualingo English test so we're going to do four things in this video I'll introduce those questions to you so you know exactly what what's coming I'll show you some of my most effective strategies for getting a high score we'll see how
this section can affect your final score and at the end we'll do some practice together so let's start by looking at this read and complete section what do you have to do so for this section you have to complete multiple words in one passage so it's similar to fill in the blanks but in that there's only one sentence and one word missing in this there's lots of sentences together in a passage and lots of words missing and how well you do in read and complete will affect your reading literacy and comprehension subscores so let's go
step by step through everything that you have to do in this question first of all you'll get a prompt on screen it will say type the missing letters to complete the text below then the system will show you the passage there'll be lots of words missing now for each word you'll have a few letters at the start and then there will be several letters that you have to complete so they do give you a little bit of help they give you the first few letters of each word and you'll have 3 minutes to complete this
whole section and in the full test there will be between three and six read and complete sets of questions so it's a pretty important pretty big part of the test and remember like everything in DET this is adaptive that means that if you're answering the questions correctly the system will make the questions harder and harder and harder but don't worry if they are getting harder that means you're doing well so that's what you have to do but let's take a look at some strategies to make sure you get the best score possible the first strategy
is context clues so context means the words around the missing word and clu means it gives you some help so what I want you to do is don't start to answer the questions at first instead read the whole passage first and then you'll understand the big idea of the passage and that will help you to more accurately find the missing words strategy two is pay attention to grammar so grammar is really important for these questions you have to think about things like the tense is it past present future subject verb agreement I go you go
he or she goes and all of the other important grammar points because even if you guess kind of the right word but you get the grammar wrong it still counts as a wrong answer and that's also true for tip three which is spelling make sure you spell the word correctly so when you have finished filling in all of the different missing words proofread go back and read all of the passage again and try to notice if you've got any of those spellings wrong because again if you guess the right word but you get one letter
wrong it's a wrong answer and tip four is an obvious one but an important one practice practice makes perfect so if you want to get more practice material we have a lot of them available on our website the link is just down here and of course you can also go to the D official website and take the full practice tests there as well so those are strategies and now let's talk about why this section is important so it's really important because it's counting towards your reading literacy and comprehension subscores and universities and jobs look at
those scores when they deciding whether to accept your application so even if for example you've got really good production you're able to speak very well for a long time and write very well for a long time if your comprehension or your reading or your literacy scores are very low that's going to be a bad sign for that University because it means if you go to the university you'll be sitting in lectures listening to the professor but you might not understand and then you wouldn't be a very good student so universities watch out for problems like
that so it's really important for us to pay attention to these questions and get as high a score as possible so let's do some practice now now this is a good opportunity for you to take part so I want you to pause the video I want you to get a pen piece of paper or you can type if you prefer but I really want you to take advantage of this and take part and while you're pausing you can also click the like And subscribe button if you want to keep enjoying our videos and improving your
DET score so we're going to do three sets of questions one question from kind of level one of difficulty so pretty easy not too easy but pretty easy the next set will be a level two a bit more difficult and then the last one will be a level three and if you can get high score on the level three we'll know that you're ready to take the det and for each set of questions I will give you 3 minutes you'll see the timer on the screen okay so your job is to read the whole passage
find those missing words write them on your paper we'll go through all three sets of questions and at the end I'll give you the answers and we'll talk about them as well all right good luck here comes the first questions your time starts now [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay welcome back so how was that I hope you enjoyed it we're going to go on to level two now so again you'll see the passage the missing words and your job is to complete them 3 minutes your time starts now [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay
so that was level two a bit more difficult I think you'll agree but you haven't seen anything yet because the next set of questions is level three the most difficult again 3 minutes you know what to do your time starts now [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay welcome back so if you've stayed this long then very good you're doing good practice already for this section of the det let's take a look at the first set of answers level one so let's read through it together the ocean is a large body so a body of
water means a big area the Sea Ocean Lakes these are bodies of water so a large body of salt water so not fresh water like a river or a lake this is salt water that covers most of the earth and you can notice that there are common repeated areas of language that we can see here that make answering this easier so most of the those words often go together so the more reading you do by yourself and the more you pay attention to the language the better you'll be able to recognize these patterns when we
repeat these words again and again then the next sentence it is home to many animals and plants whales sharks and dolphins there we could think about which one is missing so it's whale big animal in the sea dolphin also big animal in the C and then sh which is the other big a sharks okay and then R there's the grammar think about the grammar so it's something something and something so it's not is or am it must be they are okay just a few examples of the animals that live in the ocean so that was
level one pretty easy not totally easy but pretty easy I think let's take a look at a much more difficult one level two all about the Eiffel Tower so the Eiffel Tower located so that's the place where it is in Paris France I hope you got that one I think that's easy France is one of the most recognized landmarks in the world and again we can see the patterns look one of the most so very similar to what we saw in the last answer and then in the world so these things come again and again
in English the more you read the more you'll recognize them and that word recognized means everybody knows it if you see a picture you ah yeah the Eiffel Tower Paris France it was built in 1889 think about the tense so not it is built or it has been built it was built in 1889 and was originally designed so it's first the the first reason for its design as a temporary structure for the World's Fair and something to note here that word recognized notice that it has a z so in this part of the D you
have to use American English spelling all right if you've learned British English growing up then good I support you because I'm British but it's better for us to use American English for this test so that means things like you using Z instead of s in words like recognized and also deleting the letter U from words like color and honor so in British English those are o Ur in American English they're just o r then finally let's look at level three the most difficult so quantum mechanics and already if you see quantum mechanics you know oh
my God this is going to be difficult quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that explains the behavior of particles on the atomic scale it predicts many counterintuitive phenomena such as superposition and entanglement despite its complex nature quantum mechanics is essential to the development of modern technology now some of those are very difficult like entanglement even I don't think I would would have got that one but other words and groups of words there are a bit easier to guess I think particularly if you do lots of reading in English as I keep saying for
example modern technology and the development of modern technology those are common words that will usually go together so those ones I think it's realistic for us to get those correct so that's the end of our third and most difficult answer and I I want to know how easy or difficult you found these three levels so let me know in the comments below if for example number one was easy two very difficult and three impossible or maybe you think all three were very easy if you do then I think you're better at read and complete than
I am but either way don't be shy let me know how you feel about them under here in the comments remember as well to like And subscribe this video if you found it useful and if you want to get other DET videos about improving your score in the future because we release them every week make sure as well to check out all of the free resources on our website really good resources to help you prepare for the det the links are down here as well I'm Francis from last minute English thank you so much for
watching good luck in your DET and I'll see you next time
