I think something about YouTube is being overlooked here let me show you something I think it's important to understand that for the most part the algorithm for Discovery is focused more on individual videos than like trying to come up with some comprehensive average performance of a channel comprehensive average performance of a channel you're putting out the best version of this video that you can and then the algorithm says yeah bro this is not the one and the fact that that carries over and it sets the momentum for for the next one oh wow I feel
this so much but there's no need to stress about one bad video hurting your Channel or next video YouTube recommendations really don't focus on performance at a channel level YouTube recommendations really don't focus on performance at a channel level while what is being shared there is one of the biggest strengths of the YouTube algorithm I also think one key vital thing is being overlooked howdy howdy everyone Nate here I wanted to ask you a couple of questions have you ever published a video that's sh Ian knew that should have gone bigger but then it didn't
and then another Channel publishes essentially the same video and their video explodes even though you did it first or if you ever had a period of time where it felt like your videos were Unstoppable like you could publish almost anything and it would still work or if you haven't experienced that yourself yet have you ever observed another channel that was larger or even smaller than you that seem to have that going you see the point I'm making with this video is that I think something is going on behind the scenes I'm calling a quote unquote
secret metric that isn't being talked about very much here is what I think is happening and I'm certain it is much more advanced than this with the AI testing of audiences Etc but for Simplicity sake this is what I've observed with the algorithm and how they decide to spread videos I see the algorithm testing batches of audiences which again for Simplicity we're going to break into three a core audience a key Fringe audience and an outer Fringe audience the audience are the people that will watch just about any video that you publish because they like
you this audience knows your channel by name and there's a good chance it's become a habit for them to watch pretty much everything you publish the key Fringe audience are the ones that don't watch everything you publish but they are aware of you and your channel and they'll watch a video of yours if it seems extra interesting to them the outer Fringe audience are the people that have shown on the YouTube platform that they're interested in the niche that your channel is in but they don't necessarily know about you or your channel yet they're often
only shown videos when a video you publish is especially standout but here is where it gets interesting because from my observation if you as a channel creator don't have a solid core and key Fringe audience with a lot of recent viewership data the algorithm appears to be much less likely to show your content to Outer Fringe audiences with showing their content meaning giving Impressions more frequently and more often to more outer Fringe audiences and this alone is one of the the main reasons why I think so many small YouTube channels struggle to gain momentum because
of that now I need to clarify here I do believe that the same testing occurs by the YouTube algorithm on each individual piece of content which is what I think that YouTube is referring to when they make those statements I shared at the beginning of this video and I think that is a very good thing and I encourage YouTube to keep doing that what I am saying here however is that if test batch one and test batch 2 don't have a very large data set that the YouTube algor seems much less likely to test the
outer fringes as quickly as they do with other channels now here is the point I'm making and then we got to talk about what that even means here in a moment what I have observed is that Channels with larger core and key Fringe audience viewership recent satisfying viewership data have what I'm going to call Channel Authority and this is the secret metric that has to be talked about more and I think this is a good point to invite you to Boop the like button on this video so that it can spread to more people and
and hopefully we can get this in front of the YouTube Representatives themselves because I would love to hear their perspective on this all righty with the introduction of this channel Authority secret YouTube metric I have observed some things one it seems to me with the batch testing that the algorithm does there is an authority cap a degree to which the YouTube algorithm seems to be willing to test a piece of content and to the best of my observation this is Loosely related to this channel Authority all righty you may say Nate well where does this
Authority cap concept come into play well I happen to have worked directly with many many YouTube creators having access to analytics and I've observed an interesting phenomenon a smaller YouTube channel will often have Impressions that go in a spike and then a flat and then sometimes another Spike and then another flat and being in the situation of observing larger channels not necessarily having that Stark of a spike and then flat and Spike and then flat I had to ask myself what the heck is going on here and that my friend is where the batch testing
concept came from because have you ever had a video you published that seems to be performing exceptionally well for your channel and maybe it even outperforms the previous videos on your channel have you had that happen only to have it suddenly stop for no apparent reason I know you know what I'm talking about here the best way I've come up with to describe why that happens is this batch testing concept they have less Channel Authority now I need to add a thing observation here I don't necessarily think this is a broken aspect of the YouTube
algorithm in fact I think it happens because of this let me give you a scenario have you ever as a consumer of YouTube videos gone really deep into a particular subject it seems to be that the further you as a viewer go into a subject the more willing the algorithm is to show smaller channels videos to you in fact I want you to test this try deep diving into a subject on YouTube watch a lot of videos from a lot of different channels about this and then go back to your YouTube homepage and refresh the
page and see if a video from a small Channel isn't recommended to you the video being one that is somewhat related or directly related to that top topic that you just went on a deep dive into in fact I'd go so far as to say there seems to be a somewhat inverse relationship here meaning the more an audience is into a topic the less Channel Authority your channel needs in order for your video to be shown to them all right so that's next level what does that mean now think about it this way let's say
here's your channel for the sake of this pretend experiment we're doing here your channel is much smaller than this channel over here and then let's say you both publish the exact same video I know that wouldn't actually happen in real life but just play with me here if you both published the exact same video what would you expect to have happen in terms of results I think we all know based on experience and just intuiting it you would get different results your smaller Channel versus a larger Channel or your Channel with less Channel Authority and
another Channel with more Channel Authority oh oh and I do need to add a clarification here when I say larger Channel smaller Channel I'm not referring to subscriber count because subscriber count does not equal Channel Authority and I did a whole video about subscriber count you can watch after this but going back to our pretend scenario here let's pretend like you are the algorithm if you had the same situation where two channels published essentially the exact same video which one would you be more likely to trust more what if you as the algorithm every time
you tried a video or you showed a video to certain Fringe audiences it didn't perform as well you'd probably pull back and this is why even larger YouTube channels can go stagnant and also Al why you can gain it back by getting Channel Authority back on your channel and this is one of the big things I help people with including businesses and individuals so that's that layer what is next we need to talk about what the heck you or I even do about this what the heck what do we even do about this as much
as possible the YouTube algorithm is attempting to predict and measure viewer satisfaction and we can't talk about that without talking about humans let's talk about humans for a moment humans tend to be creatures of familiarity and habit they tend to focus on things that they're familiar with and that are enjoyable to them and humans are also creatures that tend to pick the path of least resistance which in YouTube terms means the path of the easiest and most enjoyable to consume content in fact to be on the quote unquote inside of a person's habitual viewing is
one of the best places that you can be on YouTube so really what you or I are looking at here is answering the question how do I or how do you gain Channel Authority or increase the channel Authority that you already have let me show you exactly what I would tell you if we're working together about building Channel Authority it is this number one whatever you can do to make your content as easy to consume and enjoyable as possible is almost always worth it in fact a client of mine made that into a sticky note
and stuck it wherever he was recording whenever he was recording if the question ever comes to mind as you're producing a video should I do this thing to make my video more enjoyable or easy to consume the answer is almost always yes it's almost always worth it with the caveat if it has to fit within your capability and the resources you have access to right now number two make it a focus for every video that you publish on your channel to be either useful or valuable to your audience in fact why not just go ahead
and say I'm going to make each video useful and valuable to my audience and this is a scale the more you do this the more satisfying your video is to your audience number three produce these above videos in a predictive way this is something I've been observing especially more recently with the constant debate of whether publishing consistently is even a valuable thing or not when it comes to channel Authority I have observed the algorithm taking into account recent data therefore if you have a consistent and predictable publishing routine for your audience sake and it becomes
a habit for them you are more likely to gain momentum so once you've done these three and you do it in a consistent repeated pattern what will happen is as your Authority goes up you'll start having those outcropping videos the videos that outperform the other videos the videos that many refer to as the viral videos or mini viral videos the ones that pop off that then draw up the rest of your channel Authority and your channel viewership now the next thing to mention here is what if there was a way to make this more predictable
after observing a large variety of channels publishing these types of videos I started to see you can actually turn them into predictable formulas Yes you heard that right you can actually customize the videos that you publish on your channel to be published at certain times to get certain audience behavior and so much so that I actually created an entire free template to make it simple for you to accomplish this so you know what you know what I'm going to say all of that is in this video I think it's a dang good video so go
ahead and watch it next
