BLTV breaks down the incredible skills and career of the modern day boxing icon, Canelo Alvarez
Video Transcript:
it's crazy to think that 2025 marks Canelo Alvarez's 20th year as a professional prize fighter he just was this legend coming out of Mexico everybody talking about him Mexican with red hair and who is beating everybody not a TKO a knockout he started out as a 15year-old kid just trying to put food on the table and is now one of the most successful athletes across all sports canelo Alvarez is obsessed with the sport of boxing he's obsessed with meaning he's obsessed with legacy creating history without a doubt a talent from the word go but his
dedication to improving his skills and achieving heights that so few ever have and ever will is a credit to not just his team and his nation of Mexico but the main man himself he climbed out of the shadows of the pound-for-pound legends that he fought alongside during his youth to now unquestionably being able to dine alongside them at the top table an incredible fighter with crushing power slick defensive skills and an uncrackable chin here now BLTV presents Canelo Alvarez's greatest hits april 18th 2008 after 18 fights unbeaten the then 17-year-old Canelo took on his biggest
challenge to date matching up with fellow undefeated Mexican prospect Gabriel El Rey Martinez [Applause] while admittedly a game challenger Martinez would eventually succumb to the overall class of Canelo with the lightning fast combinations only battered by the spiteful individual power shots leading to a TKO in the 11th furthering Canelo's unbeaten streak to 19 with 16 inside the distance december 5th 2009 Canelo stepped up to face the cockshore American boxing veteran Leonardo Tiner the Mayweather affiliated fighter who did everything he could to gain a mental edge before the fight [Applause] customer from the outset not only
being one of the first fighters to really stick it on Canelo but also showing the mental fortitude and toughness to showboat his way through the inevitable Alvarez onslaught [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a competitive fight but after 12 rounds Canelo was the clear winner retaining his North American boxing championship september 18th 2010 now campaigning at the 154-lb division Canelo ventured over to America challenging the former welterweight champion Carlos Balddeir who was about as tough and durable as any aging fighter in the sport part of the narrative of the fight because Balir hasn't been knocked out in
decades hard right hand for Alvarezing himself hard right hand by Alvarez that one shook Baldin it was a very disciplined performance on Canelo's behalf slowly picking Vdemir apart waiting for the veteran to tire during the mid rounds before he moved in for the finish alvarez 20 of 37 i think when you think of the speed of the top fighters in the welterweight division and the possibility that fighters from the 140 lb class has taken tremendous punishment this is Zazzler down goes Belair on a rocket left hook and the count is finished and he knocked Belir
out not a TKO a knockout a spectacular way for Canelo to announce himself to a broader spectrum of boxing fans knocking out a man who had been competing at the top level and hadn't been KO'ed for over 20 years march 5th 2011 after 36 professional fights Canelo was finally ready to challenge for his first world title taking on the younger brother of Ricky the Hit Manhattan Matthew an always strong in game competitor currently in the best form of his career if he doesn't get a left hand does Alvarez left hand to the chin right hand
to the nose and some blood from Hatch's nose as Hatch digs in with a couple of hooks counter right by Alvarez matthew elected to try and outbox Canelo on the back foot but the younger man was quite easily capable of closing the distance and putting together vicious combinations landing his power shots at an alarmingly high rate leaving his brother scared for what was to come from his ringside seat feel the will of Alvarez just wearing and wearing and wearing and what a combination by Alvarez hatton's only been stopped once in his career fights back and
eats a right hand canelo's assault to the body was key in allowing him to dominate the action down the line matthew made it to the final bell but only just as Canelo became the youngest champion in the history of the light middleweight division at just 20 years of age may 5th 2012 Canelo was attempting to make a fourth defense of his WBC light middleweight title matching up against the former pound-for-pound star and future first ballot hall of famer Sugar Shane Mosley and part of you wonders if Canelo is showing a little bit too much respect
for this version of Mosley or now Shane comes back to the body himself this is the intensity which has made him a star in Mexico mosley was able to hold his own and use some experienced rough house tactics to open up a cut on Canelo's eye early on however the younger fresher Alvarez eventually found his rhythm and range consistently snapping the head back of Sugar Shane who is clearly becoming overwhelmed by not just the speed but Alvarez's pinpoint accuracy respond to activities but when Canelo lands he's knocking Shane's head back mosley showed great heart to
make it to the final bell notwithstanding Canelo had few issues throughout reflected by the whitewash 119 109 scorecards april 20th 2013 Alvarez stepped up another level by challenging the undefeated WBA 154 title holder Austin Trout just couldn't land touch him on the chest there but this is the distance Canelo needs to start landing and there there's a right hand that connects for Canelo flashes the jab doubles up the jab to the round oh a nice jab from Canelo that stinks right hand so what that Oh and a nice right hook there and as is often
the case when you have a conventional fighter and there is Canelo dropping Trump with a straight right canelo was the much sharper fighter early on and was rewarded with a knockdown in the seventh that had Austin on queer street the WBA champ responded well however droning forward but a lot of his best work was either blocked or negated entirely by Canelo's slick upper body movements good head movement good head movement by Canelo avoiding the front of that attack by Trout trout left it all in the ring but the story of the fight was simply Canelo
landing the better welltimed counters that clinched the closer rounds whenever Austin landed well Saul responded 5 seconds later with something better a close contest but an albeit well-deserved unanimous decision victory september 14th 2013 in a fight build as the one Canelo put his 43 fight unbeaten streak on the line facing up with the pay-per-view king and pound-for-pound best fighter in the sport Floyd Mayweather Jr try not to and Alvarez is trying very hard not to nice counter left hook though by Alvarez boy being respectful of Canelo's power too he knows this is a strong kid
canelo came out as the aggressor and had some relative success early on however his attacking style was quickly figured out by Floyd who started picking Stall apart with counter punches leaving the Mexican visibly frustrated getting him in a hold and then he's going to have to be desperate one two combination there by Mayweather connects to the right hand and Canelo beginning to converse with Mayweather as he comes forward canelo sticks the jab and the right hand although he ate that right uppercut from long distance it wasn't quite the whitewash some people make out today i'd
class it as more of a competitive schooling as Floyd used his superior skills and notable fighting experience to win a fairly comfortable majority decision dishing out Canelo's one and only loss in what would become a 17-year period as a professional boxer march 8th 2014 Canelo was back after the Mayweather defeat and was about pure business matching up with the tough and rugged contender Alfredo Angulo in an anticipated all Mexican class one two combination mental beating than a physical one as we go down the stretch here round two you know it makes you wonder if he
can keep it up and it ends on expensive punch combination by Canelo but now comes Angula with the multiple punch combination of its own he's finally got Canelo backing up but he's still ineffective just pass the midpoint around five and Canelo rocking the head with the right hand 11% landed that is not good double left hand land it's like he is now healed this is now the toe we've been looking for there's a lead left uppercut and referee canelo stopped Angulo on his feet in the 10th displaying incredible skills not just offensively with his thuing
combinations but also defensively with highlight reel worthy slips and counters a gutsy performance from Angulo a complete masterclass from Canelo july 12th 2014 Canelo jumped straight back into the deep end less than a year on from the Mayweather defeat taking on the dangerous slick and hard-hitting boogeyman Eris Landry lara said that you know Lara's defense is basically his movement that's really true it's off balance though lara using just enough movement canelo unloads with a couple of right hands there's a nice combination that culminated with a left hook to the body canelo came out as the
clear aggressor but that largely played into Lara's hands as the Cuban was able to pick Saul apart with powerful counters on the back foot albeit at a rate that was low enough to make each passing round a pick them for the judges as the bout headed into the second half fin left hook to the body there's the body work by Camilo as we are coming up on the final 60 seconds [Applause] there's a combination that scored for love will be partisan for you but he's doing some great work beautiful combination canelo works the body but
again there is Landy Lara able to pivot away lara boxed a great fight very disciplined and tactical but in the end the judges favored Canelo's aggression and combination punches resulting in a fairly contested split decision victory may 9th 2015 after the controversy surrounding the Lara fight Canelo needed a big performance to silence critics and regain momentum among the fans although the hard punching top contender James Kirkland is a dangerous man to underestimate right hand by Canelo kirkland firing away lands a left lands another left canelo's getting hit by Kirkland and he's stuck in the corner
well Canelo taking his time and landing the big shot low right hand down goes Kirkland kirkland came out applying pressure but was clipped hard barely a minute into the opening round and while he did make it back to his feet his legs were all over the place as Canelo up and started treating him like a punching bag and Kirkland's going to make it out of the round just barely 10 to the body just like that left hook to the body there and another big left hook knocks Kirkland into the ropes alvarez landing everything straight right
straight right straight right left to the body kirkland's going to get stopped if he doesn't throw some shots things went from bad to worse in the second the writing was on the wall for a brutal night those body shots those body shots will wear anybody down what a savage this is target practice for Canelo Alvarez yes it is right uppercut continues to land there's a perfect straight right hand and surely going to stop the fight what a performance by Canelo Alvarez maybe all things considered the most electrifying of Canelo Alvarez's career november 21st 2015 one
of boxing's greatest nation rivalries was front and center for the boxing world to enjoy with a Puerto Rican Hall of Fame great Miguel Cotto offering Canelo a first shot of glory at the 160 lb middleweight division lateral movement clearly a part of the Cotto plan early on good right hand by Canelo and the left hook after the jab sometimes sometimes just throw a straight right canelo just looks so much bigger physically than Cotto right hand by Canelo for Canelo Alvarez hard left uppercut canelo is really doing some great training to cause Cotto some issues right
now cotto as expected made the fight competitive early on in the close quarter exchanges but the younger more astute Canelo was able to absorb whatever Miguel threw and land the much more eye-catching power shots that left Cotto's trainer Freddy Roach no choice but to re-evaluate the game plan and revert to a more box and move approach a style Miguel had excelled at particularly toward the tail end of his career oh good action good real tough exchanges from both guys good body shot by Cotto one of his best of the fight alvarez answers the body and
go tremendous uppercut for Alvarez freddy Roach is the greatest trainer in the sport and the one most capable of making an adjustment that can change a fight throws a right uppercut then slips the left hook cotto was able to implement some positive changes but Canelo's timing with his power punches was ultimately the deciding factor giving the Mexican vital experience and route to a unanimous decision victory two extremely classy fighters that's a good prize [Applause] fight on May 7th 2016 Canelo made his first defense of his WBC middleweight title against a surprise challenger in Amamir Khan
hard right hand by Khan they have to let the bigger guy know that they're in there with a real fighter this is when air's movement has to be purposed he seems to have quicker hands than feet amir had Canelo's family in tears at ringside as he was able to stun Saul with his striking speed and precision alvarez remained the calmst person in the building however and was able to land the odd counter in the first three rounds that appeared to take Khan's legs away momentarily because he won't beat this good right to the body from
taking away his energy in every right hand by Canelo and Kenny Bis is stopping the fight canelo flatlined Khan in the sixth making his patient tentative approach count by pouncing when the time was right the 2016 Ring Magazine KO of the [Applause] year may 6th 2017 Canelo attempted to make it a memorable Cinco deayo weekend by giving the fans an all Mexican showdown squaring off with the son of a legend Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by being told by the referee to keep his punches up he's in the rhythm he's in the nice bloody little move
here from Canelo it's all Canalo he's got to do something to disrupt his confidence and not allow him to throw punches like that punch of the fight so far great right hand for Alvarez alvarez was dominant in complete control during the opening half of the fight which was reflected by his reluctance to even rest on his stool during the interval periods a stark comparison to the battered and bruised Chavez whose father looked on with concern at ringside chavez he's there for one reason i love you i wouldn't go as far as to say a sparring
session because at least Chavez showed some courage to survive the distance but the much hyped up event pretty much boiled down to watching Canelo hit the heavyweight bag on pay-per-view disappointing overall but that's not to downplay a stellar all-around impressive boxing performance on Canelo's behalf september 16th 2017 after years of torment and goating from fans Canelo finally stepped up and faced the first true middleweight of his dubious 160lb run so far but he didn't challenge any old 160 pounder instead matching up with the pound-for-pound middleweight wrecking machine Gennady Triple Glo this is the first round
you got it he acts like he's in the middle of the ring with very big and that's what Canelo wanted to do he's been waiting the fight didn't explode into the Haggler Hearn type of madness fans were hoping for more so a display of elite technical skills where both fighters found home for some of the hailmary shots that in all honesty highlighted the uncrackable chins both fighters possessed as opposed to the offensive fight IQs it took to set up such intricate shots he's not landing after late rounds play out but I have Triple G coming
on i've scored rounds five and six with I think those rounds are close i think that's [Music] looking right from Canelo both fighters opened up more during the championship rounds but even while they were taking more risks neither could capitalize and take control these were two equally matched fighters regardless of the pace they fought at which was reflected by the judges scoring the fight a draw an outcome both fighters felt hard by despite the majority of boxing fans feeling Triple G had done enough to win september 15th 2018 a year on from their epic first
encounter Canelo again matched up with who had now become his archboxing rival Triple G in order to once and for all settle the claim for not just 160 supremacy but the assertion for the pound-for-pound number one good shot yes he does oh good canelo body shot by Canelo he continues to lead in that category he's not really used to that heaven to him yeah there's blood on his beard from that cut i mean but he lands his jab continuously and it's all a matter of what do the judges want to look at his triple team
lands a combination outside of being a competitive closely fought bout the second fight was different in many ways as Golovkin tried to control the tempo in the distance with his crushing jab and Canelo elected to try and break the older man down with a sustained assault to the body g with that stiff jab now lands a right hand again canelo comes back with his counter shots closed the show and knocks his guy out alvarez lands power shots in return it's a pier six brawl down the stretch they come the fight was very much the tale
of two halves as Canelo's early control eventually succumbed to Triple G's incredible ring general ship both guys had their moments and landed some hellacious shots this time around the judges favored Canelo's work which after such a long drawn out buildup clearly meant more to Alvarez than any other win of his career thus far may 5th 2019 with the middleweight lineage on the line Canelo faced the hard punching former twotime middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs in what would go on to be Saul's last ever fight at the 160 lb limit you know I rarely see Sergio good
hook to the head and a right hand from Canelo good clean right hand from Canelo Alvarez and a combination bit of a flurry from Danny Jacobs good answer from Canelo now he mix it up that hook landed by Canelo Alvarez now the exchange jacobs had some success in the championship rounds but it was too little too late as Canelo cruised to a wide unanimous decision victory november 2nd 2019 Canelo stunned the boxing world by moving up not one but two weight divisions to challenge the former pound-for-pound machine and current WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Crusher
Kova decision that was in 2016 and yet he's not opening up any new Aris that fight landed outside the odds slipping counter power shot from Canelo sergey was in cruise control and dominating the fight while still only appearing to be in second gear this led head coach Eddie Reynoso to instruct his man to look for a knockout as by now too many losing rounds have passed final half of round eight here comes Canelo landed that hook it's pretty clearcut easy to see his shots traditional straight up the middle maybe not here tonight perhaps Canelo is
winning these rounds as he comes out firing po's not even committing to the There it is hov's hurt poval's down kovalev's out it's over that fast there's fifth gear canelo is the light heavyweight champion of the world when the chips were down Canelo found it in him to land one of the most important punches of his career keeping Kovalev down for over 10 minutes with a solid left hook straight right combination etching his name into the history books by becoming a four-weight world champion along the way december 19th 2020 after a successful but clearly troubling
debut at 175 Canelo decided to move down to super middleweight to start making his mark at the division many would assume would be his optimal weight class immediately jumping straight into the deep end challenging the undefeated current WBA and lineal 168 champion Callum Smith chev again in a right hand from Canelo shot but Canelo comes back and he is throwing much harder right now gets Counter Smith up on the ropes the first two rounds 90 good right hand by Canelo i think we know who's going to win that battle uppercut from Canelo brings the head
up on Smith it has been mostly Canelo Alvarez a lot of Mexican fighters do that chavez used to do that hard right hand smith is hurt i wouldn't go as far as Chavez Jr but Smith was beaten in a similar vein constantly pressured and pummeled up against the ropes allowing Canelo to land some of the most powerful punches we've seen him throw in a boxing ring a complete shutout a dominant victory marking Canelo's early tenure at one of boxing's most exciting and talent-rich divisions may 8th 2021 it had been a few years since Canelo had
faced a quote unquote slick boxer which led to a highly anticipated clash of styles when he faced the undefeated and brash Billy Joe Saunders out of range he's in the danger zone also in the United Kingdom good morning when he moves in he seems to overwhelm Billy Jesus no right hand best punch of the fight billy Joe says "Come on." These are heavy blows from Canaro then Canelo in the ring definitely crafty and clever i mean he uses pivots he uses angles he's Oh nice hook from Saunders alvarez was certainly controlling the action but Saunders
remained a threat throughout unsettling the rhythm with his awkward style canelo's commitment to big lunging power shots was either going to be a master stroke or contribute to his downfall as Saunders appeared to be growing into things midway through the contest the body had looking for the big shot landed on the chin saunders shook it off sticks his tongue out right now that's a Tyson Fury move 6866 Canelo saunders took an awkward step back and now he's holding on canelo landed a home run uppercut in the eighth slipping a lazy Saunders right hook and hammering
home by far the best punch of the night the shot broke Billy Joe's eye socket leaving him no option but to quit at the end of the round that added another strap to the collection and moved Saul's record to an impressive 56 wins with one loss boxing he's obsessed with winning he's obsessed with legacy creating history his footwork his speed his combination his selection of shots two combination mental and a physical one as we go down the stretch of round two and I don't think I've ever seen a fighter as good as Canelo Alvare up
close he's got to do something to disrupt his confidence and not allow him to throw punches like that punch of the fight so far canelo is the only one out there for the last decade consistently fighting the very best consistently going out there and seeking and taking every big challenge until somebody else does that on the level of Canelo there is no debate whatsoever over who the number one fighter in the world
