hey everybody welcome back to diesel Creek my name is Matt in a previous video you guys saw me go to the auction and buy up a bunch of equipment that I intend to flip and turn a profit on so one of those items was the genie 1056 I think is the model now it was not a very cheap unit to pick up I had to give $223,000 for it but the same exact unit with just a little bit less hours went in the sale for 40 Grand and I was able to pick up our unit
in the timed auction not running for 23 So when you say it like that I actually think I got a pretty good deal on it problem is it doesn't run so in today's video hopefully we're going to be able to tackle that issue and get that thing running and operating and get it ready for resale I'm hoping I should be able to almost double my money on this unit on the open market so let's get into it oh [Music] [Music] well that's interesting I just started cranking it over just so I could turn the wheels
a little bit to steer it and it fired up and it seems like it cleared up too it's getting better kind of smells like oil or something maybe very interesting I was not expecting that let's check all of our vitals here 64 PSI we got oil pressure coolant temps coming up or charging it's not super super happy but man it's running I'm not sure what to say about that at this point yeah something's not right it's not liking the throttle yeah I got it floored right now something is not right here H do we have
hydraulic function at least oh yeah oh yeah that part's good well we basically have a check engine light on there's a Code up on that screen there so we're going to figure all that out there's a lot to figure out I guess but we know the engine's not blown up now so that's that's a bonus all right it's been running for like 10 minutes now and I just re-engaged the drive line basically to get it up onto the trailer and get it here we had to manually disengage it since the machine was dead so with
it re-engaged we're going to see if this thing will drive and if it does I'm going to try to drive it up onto the back porch of the shop here so I can uh go through it a little better and try to figure out what's going on cuz something's definitely wrong still all right here we go going to see if this thing's going to move now boys we lucked out again four-wheel steering appears to be working let's switch it over to two so I don't crash oh oh there we go we got some brakes brakes
took a second to kick in there engine still not running right I got floored right now you can see we're like 11 1200 RPM but this short beat's trying to push it up there with a loader yeah we should be we should be going a lot better than we are meatball is not impressed what it's a genie don't you like the genie come on guy what do you think Buddy everybody's been asking about the meatball he's still around so there's old Rosco get a little gray in the face though huh as you guys saw there
I started to try to push this machine around and I was going to use the loader to shove it all the way back up here and get it someplace where we could start diving into this thing and try to work on it and I have cranked and cranked on this thing in the auction yard when we brought it home from the auction and I don't know probably 10 other times between then and now and for some reason today it chose to be its Miracle Day it sat over there in the healing weeds long enough I
guess and it decided to up so we know it runs now we know it drives and the boom goes up but we're definitely not out of the woods yet as you guys could probably hear engine's not running so hot I don't think there's anything critically wrong with the engine but it's definitely got something going on with it so we need to dive into that what do you think mebo he's a good boy huh well it's been a half hour or so since I shut it off let's see if it's going to restart fired right back
up up it's not spitting and sputtering this time like it was the first time either look at that it's it's even revving up now like it's supposed to it wouldn't do that before it's going all the way to the red line that's kind of strange that it wouldn't do it before but it is now I mean I've literally done nothing to this thing I don't understand but I'm not going to complain about it I wish I had some forks and we could actually run this thing around and test it says there's a intermittent key switch
issue we're going to have to get the manual to to figure all these out I don't know I don't see anything critical it's running really good now let's see how far we can push our luck does the air conditioning work the blower comes on we're going to have to go back and look and see if the AC compressor is engaging the clutch doesn't look like the compressor's kicking in probably just need to recharge it well while this thing's running good we're going to have to give it a little quick run up the road here see
what it'll do cuz when I pulled it under the porch here it would not rev up it barely made it onto the porch now it seems to be running fine pretty steady RPM it revs up seems like it does everything it's supposed to second gear works there we go we're cutting out for power again [Music] it'll still rev up in neutral which I think is odd [Music] I don't know we're going to have to do some investigating here I don't know if you guys can hear it either when you shut it down ites makes a
pretty good clanking sound I'm not sure what that is clanking but we're going to have to figure that out okay well we're back on the Genie Lift today this thing has been sitting here for way too long and I need to get it fixed up and sold so I grabbed a couple fuel filters for it um since we are having a low fuel pressure issue that's pretty much the easiest place to start they don't look like they're terrible to get to we go ahead and spin these off of here and thread on some new ones
bleed the system and see what we got I'm pretty skeptical that these fuel filters are actually our issue but it's a cheap easy place to start well that fuel isn't quite as clean as I thought it was going to be so maybe there is something going on here doesn't look terrible but it's it's not colored like I would think usually off-road fuel has this reddish tint to it but it's a lot brighter tint than that this kind of looks like it's almost darker than it should be looking in the fuel tank with a flashlight I
can't see anything down in the fuel tank but we'll spin off the water separator down there and uh see what it's like yeah that is not very good looking fuel very interesting we'll throw some filters on here and see what happens man that would be awesome if that's all it takes to fix this thing uh-huh so I'm already thinking ahead if this filters aren't the issue which like I said I I kind of doubt that they are I guess the next logical place to look would be either the fuel transfer section of our injection pump
or we could have a fuel pressure sensor issue but I don't think that would cause our actual running stumbling issues I feel like that would only just make the computer unhappy and it would still run fine but I could be wrong about about that this has way more electronical than I'm used to working on all right now I just got to sit here and push this primer button until it gets hard to push could be a while that wasn't too bad actually it's pretty hard now that's all there is to it let's fire this thing
up see what happens man fingers crossed this would be such a nice easy fix can I get a contact let's go Prime that a bit more no leaks that's good all right moment of truth I guess that really might have fixed it that seems pretty good that's a lot better than before I couldn't get it to rev up we're not throwing any codes down here on our little computer screen it's not angry at us could that have really been all it needed was fuel filters guess we're going to take it for a drive and find
[Music] out no no still not not happy [Applause] better it wouldn't do second gear at all before we're doing it now but like I say not not happy that's disappointing it had me go in there for a minute [Applause] bummer I wonder if there's that much in the fuel tank because it's already not able to rev up like it [Applause] was well here we are with the genie in the shop uh it would not surprise a lot of you like 10 months later maybe more I don't remember when I bought this thing but it's been
around here way too long and I wanted to flip this machine and sell it and it's just been getting pushed off and pushed off but uh finally started poking around in her guts here trying to figure out what the issues are the codes on the computer system are for a low fuel pressure I don't know if that's at the rail or if that's coming into the pump or where it's reading low pressure at but this here this fuel connection right here is a return line that just goes back to tank so there shouldn't be any
pressure on it but it also still can't get a in there cuz it puts an air pocket in the system if it sucks air and when I wiggled this line earlier just ever so slightly you could hear it sucking air so it's also you know got some fuel leaking around it you can tell it's just kind of wet that's why I was playing with it we can investigate that maybe it just needs an o-ring in that connector um that could definitely be part of an issue but the other thing I was looking at this controller
board thing here I don't know what it is but we had kind of stabbed these wires back into their connectors up at the sale before I even bought it trying to get this thing to run at the sale I don't remember if I noticed this one on the right here was also messed up but they both are messed up for sure currently and the wire pulled back out of this one sometime over the course of the year um so let's go ahead and put some new eyelets on this thing and see maybe that's going to
help us I don't know I don't think so I don't really know what that board does it kind of looks aftermarket doesn't really look like something Perkins would put on the side of the engine AKA caterpillar maybe it's something that Genie does as an afterthought for this engine but at any rate I'm sure those wires aren't supposed to be just hanging there in the [Music] air I didn't have any of the smaller diameter rings for the terminals unfortunately this one will have to do I had smaller Rings just none that would fit this wire gauge
I guess I should say no matter how supplied up and stocked up you think you are you'll always run across something that'll prove you wrong [Music] [Music] well at least we can say we fixed something on here today I don't know about you guys but when I stare at the side of an engine like this and you see nothing but hoses and harnesses and wires and looms going everywhere makes me kind of sick I don't really I don't like it I'm not a fan but I did poke around here long enough I think and this
is a big think but I think I might have found our Smoking Gun so this right here this tube is the breather tube what runs down for the case breather it is rubbing up against this line back here now that fuel line that is rubbing against is the return line right here that I was saying I could hear leaking whenever I would slightly wiggle it it's rubbed up here on this fuel line so much that it's like paper thin right there I think we probably have just rubbed through and it's causing yeah it I can
just stick my fingernail right through that hard plastic line now so that's not good that's that's an issue I don't have the stuff to fix this maybe the correct way oh look it's rubbed up here too at the T looks like it might be leaking there too and that could also cause some fuel pressure issues pulled that up now we got some slack so it's not rubbing on those I'm going to try to clean up these line surfaces good and throw on some sort of like epoxy coating on those just to proof of concept and
see if uh I can eliminate any leaks in those is that going to fix our problem of course you going squeeze both sides so while I was probing around the machine here I saw some oily residue running down the air-to-air cooler and I stuck my light in up here and had a little look around and what I found was this guy vibration must be a serious issue on this machine because as you can see before this blew out it had vibrated and rubbed this boot very very thin and then the charge air pressure caused it
to split open like that there's even another spot where is it at right there where it was rubbed very thin as well so that air boot no bueno and that air boot came out of this hole up here well the reason there's oil running everywhere is because that boot was ripped open and apparently the turbo is dumping oil into the charge air which is no bueno either when I took this boot off up there it literally just dumped oil out of it this little boot here is the one that came off the compressor side of
the turbo and same story it is just coated in oil if you stick your fingers up in the compressor housing there again coated in oil that means our turbo seals are shot I've already talked to our friends over there at area Diesel Service so I'm pretty sure I'm going to remove this thing box it up and ship it out to them in the morning hopefully we get it back pretty quick they're usually a really quick turn around it's one of the reasons I like them but then we'll have a rebuilt Turbo with hopefully good seals
in it that aren't putting ton of oil into our intake all right go ahead and start spraying down these bolts so we maybe have a shot at getting them off of there we're going to get the turbo off the last thing I want to do before I send this thing off is verify that the turbo drain is uh not obstructed for any reason it's a short little hose so it's not like pinched or anything I highly doubt you could get any debris in there to block it but worth checking out I've also noticed there's a
teeny little bit of axial play in the turbo which is normal like that's within spec probably it's very minimal there's no endplay uh at least none that I can detect with my fingers but it is like kind of stiff to turn like it should spin like a top you should be able to and it's not it's kind of if that makes any sense to you we could have some other lingering turbo issues so it's definitely starting to seem like the best option is to send it out and get it gone through [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
okay I think I think this thing's ready to come off oh yeah success well there she is I knocked off the exhaust elbow so you can see up inside there to the uh exhaust side the wheels look good best I can tell anyway to my untrained eye she's just loaded up with oil though also like I talked about earlier like it does not free Spin at all like you can turn it without a lot of effort but it doesn't free Spin as soon as you stop it stops I'm confident that area Diesel Service will get
her licked up though so I'm going to toss it in a box and ship it off to them and I'll rejoin you when it's back boy we got our turbocharger back big thanks to those guys over at area Diesel Service they always have a very quick turnaround time I I sent this off last week I got it back this week and unfortunately they didn't seem to find any Smoking Gun uh if you are interested in the turbo tear down diagnosis and repair you can head on over to their Channel I'll leave a link down below
there in the pin comment or the description and uh have a gander they make some really good in-depth videos about tearing down the stuff that I send them and uh how they fix it because that's beyond my capabilities it's uh it's much better to let professionals handle this kind of stuff in the box we have some new manifold gaskets and then under here should be the piece that resistance oh yeah here it is must have been a few drops on moisture or something get trapped in the bag with this turbo it's actually sat here for
like a week waiting for me to get time to reinstall it and in that one week a couple drops of water can really stain up a nice bare metal housing like that but that won't matter not for very long anyway once this thing's installed it's going to oxidize just the way every turbo does no sense in worrying about that so from what I understand our compressor and turbine housings were both fine so basically all they ended up doing was putting a new cartridge in it so like a center section with the new wheels and rotating
assembly it definitely spins easier than when I sent it off so one of the notes that they had told me about this unit was that it looked like it was probably sucking unfiltered air so let's have a gander at our intake plumbing and see what we can see there so this should be our intake tubing and from what I can see it looks pretty darn clean and that's a very short tube all it does is run up and over it hits a 90° rubber boot up there that rubber boot ties into this piece of tubing
up here which just runs right in the back of our air filter and our air filter is still nice and white the pleats are all very clean now that's not to say that there wasn't a horribly filthy packed dirty nasty filter in there right before they sent this thing to the auction and we bought it but uh from what I can see the intake Plumbing doesn't show signs of dirt you'll have to forgive my fingers are probably already kind of dirty but I'm not really pulling out any kind of crusty nastiness out of there it
it seems to be pretty clean so if it was sucking dirty air from somewhere I'm really not sure where so aside from a clogged air filter or damaged intake Plumbing Kurt said some of the other things that could cause issues that we had with the turbo would be things like the the drain line here so you have your oil coming into the Turbo from this Top Line it rides in the bearing in the cartridge and then it gravity drains out through this line which just goes right back into the side of the block if that
becomes obstructed somehow um basically the oil getting pumped in Under Pressure up here has no place to go and it'll Force its way into the intake while we did find a fair bit of oil in the charge air side of things uh I don't think that that was ever our issue because if that was the case you know this oil being under pressure we would have been pumping a lot more of it uh that would have been really really oily on that side and the engine oil would probably be low I did just for Giggles
though uh put my mouth on that tube and verify that it is clear I can blow air straight through that tube so there's definitely no restrictions on the return side of things the last thing that he said in this one may be our issue is blowby if the engine has some blowby you can basically create case pressure like the actual engine block will become pressurized and instead of the oil just gravity draining out of here now there's actually pressure from combustion getting into the engine case and forcing this oil basically to stay in the tube
or back up into the turbo I could see that a little bit in our scenario here there is a little bit of blow by on this engine not a lot but a little I don't think it's enough to cause our issue but uh I guess we're just going to have to to try it and see they did find one little score on the ceiling surface of that turbo when they disassembled it maybe that score was all it really took to uh put that oil in there like we saw at any rate I'm going to get
set and start reinstalling that turbo now that it's repaired we can rule that out as an issue and then hopefully our fuel line repair that we did on the other side is going to uh prove that that was air getting into our fuel system causing our under power issue anyways I'm going to get started cramming this back in that hole I'm going to set you guys up to watch and uh yeah I'm excited I can't wait to fire this thing up and see if we can actually make some boost pressure with a repaired turbo and
a charge air boot that's in one piece I'm thinking we might actually have some boost oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well got that oil draining so that we don't put any uh dirty old contaminated possibly contaminated oil into our rebuilt turbo there so uh we're going to let that drain I'm going to slap a new filter on it some fresh oil and we're ready to fire this thing back up this thing is not the most fun to pour oil into I'll tell you that yeah it just keeps wanting to go everywhere can't get a good
angle on the funnel I'm going to get to a point where I have a barrel on Wheels with a pump on it and that's how we're going to fill up everything making a mess everywhere all right we got the oil topped off now we are ready to finally try to fire this thing up and see hopefully it runs better those fuel lines that we found that had the rub through areas I put an epoxy over those just as a proof of concept to see if those were in fact or Smoking Gun for why we have
a lack of fuel pressure hopefully after it runs a second kind of P sures any air out of the system I did run the primer a few times make sure that we had good fuel pressure so hopefully it starts good runs good but it may take a second to also kind of work any air remaining out of the lines aside from that we have to keep an eye on this Turbo too once it starts need to make sure that we don't have any leaks going on over there so uh fingers crossed let's fire this thing
up contact [Applause] [Applause] no leaks so that part's good at least [Applause] [Applause] [Music] still doesn't seem very happy we'll let it warm up a little bit we'll open up the door take it outside and see if it'll do anything [Applause] [Music] well I can't say I'm very surprised but I am disappointed fixing those fuel lines while I'm sure it was some sort of problem and it does seem to run a little bit better now it was not our Smoking Gun that was not our big major issue for the lack of fuel pressure well here
we are about a month later just as inexplicably as this thing had started to run it has ceased to run you guys saw me fire this thing up after we installed the turbo drove it out of the shop I parked it back here and was fully intending on working on it again in the near future and I don't know a couple weeks ago I went to do just that and I cranked it it's been starting reliably I will say since the first time I got it running and now it just cranks and cranks and cranks
and no start no smoke no nothing so we're finally going to go ahead and install an inline fuel pump like I've been wanting to do since we started this project and for some reason I just cannot bring myself to work on this thing I just get disgusted with it I think it's mainly cuz it's so digital and not manual too new basically I don't like working on this stuff you know I've talked about from the beginning we bought this thing to kind of flip it and well I've been sitting on it for a year now
and I haven't flipped it so I need to get this thing moving coming into spring this is the time time of year to sell something like this so uh yeah let's uh toss this fuel pump in here and hopefully that's going to make an improvement for us hopefully I can at least get the thing running get it boomed down and into the shop to uh further diagnose I isolated our fuel lines here this is the supply line from the tank I'm just going to go ahead and snip that right there and then stab our uh
our little temporary pump in there these things are the best thing ever they line pinching clamps and that just just pinches that line and uh we're not going to have fuel running everywhere that'll be nice ehy just a little bit's going to dribble out of here all right I got to verify our direction of flow going that way all right pumps installed take our clamps off obviously this isn't like plumbed in here nice or anything it's just temporary this is just to test and see if we have actual low fuel pressure or if the gauge
the sensor rather is is wrong so I'm just going to throw some Gator clamp onto these wires to the battery and we're going to try to start it all right we'll just listen to the pump on start up here and see if we hear it make pressure yeah sounds to me like it's pushing quite a bit of air through the system usually these things will kind of bog down and they don't click as loud after they run for a couple seconds so we're flowing fuel through the system let's go ahead and try to start this
thing oh fingers crossed we have something here contact f what we're probably doing here while we're cranking is kind of purging out the fuel lines so all we can do is kind of crank this thing and let it work the air through the system I still hear the fuel pump running over there but it sounds like it might have found a happy idling point so uh I saw just a little teeny tough of smoke there when I let off the key before we might be getting close still not really getting much smoke out of that
not giving me a lot of [Music] confidence so for what it's worth I did finally print out the uh fault code sheet for this engine and all the numbers that we're getting back are related to fuel pressure so without a computer to plug into this thing and be able to see all the live data uh this is the best I can do as far as troubleshooting goes and I'm starting to think that we're looking at an injection pump that needs rebuilt so that's a flop I thought for sure putting that little inline clickety clack pump
on there was going to solve all our fuel pressure problems and get this thing to fire up I was thinking it was just the lift pump side of the injection pump um basically what gets the fuel from the tank to the high pressure side was where we were having our issues now I'm starting to think it might be the high pressure side of the pump or it could still be the computer so I'm like this close to just ripping the injection pump off of there and sending it out to get rebuilt as well but obviously
that represents a significant amount of work and uh you know money to get something like that repaired I don't have the fancy interface and the computer program to be able to plug in to this uh ECM and read all the live data but I think our buddy Sam over at Scrappy Industries might so I'm probably going to hit him up for a favor see if he can plug into this thing and have a gander at the live data see if that can definitively tell us what is going on here I didn't have any filming of
it it might be a little bit in the time lapse but we actually ended up using this machine uh last fall and this actually set some of the walls on my garage on the new house and stuff so like the machine itself does work or did rather until it quit running on us I just could never get it to run right it would just sit there and stammer and stumble like you guys have heard and never really clear up never really have any power you know you could telescope it all the way out it would
just take you 10 years to get there ultimately I think we're going to come out okay on this even if I have to redo the injection pump or the ECM it can't be both of them I don't think anyways I think it could only be one or the other um but even if we have to replace one of those I think we're still going to come out okay on this deal it's going to be profitable but uh I was really hoping for an easy fix though and it would appear that that was very naive of
me I am however confident that once we find The Smoking Gun this is going to be a good machine for somebody and it will be for sale so anyways I guess I'm going to call that a wrap for right now until I can get something to plug into this thing and actually read the live data I think we're kind of dead in the water on this project at least we were able to fix the turbo issue thanks to our friends over at area Diesel Service and like I said if you guys haven't seen that video
on that turbo rebuild you should go check it out they do some fun engaging videos on tearing stuff down like that doing the failure analysis and showing how they go about fixing stuff like that so pretty neat something I never really watched before I uh started talking to those guys but uh yeah kind of neat to see the process behind the curtain if you will so anyways that's going to be a wrap for now if you guys like this video do me a big favor hit that thumbs up button down below the video doesn't cost
you guys a dime and it really helps out the channel if you want to help support the channel in a little more direct fashion you can head on over to diesel creek.com pick yourself up some sweet swag over there at the store that's diesel creek.com link as always down below in the description but until the next time thanks for watching and I'll catch you later [Music] [Applause] [Music]
