[Music] hey guys it's lexi welcome back to my channel welcome here if you are new this is episode 5 in my homemade dog food and treats playlists i have a total of three homemade dog food recipes on my youtube channel i also have a homemade dog treat video as well so i have all those linked down below for you guys but in today's video i have another homemade dog food recipe for you guys my dogs have been on this recipe for about a month and they absolutely love it it uses chicken tons of fresh vegetables
they seriously love this recipe so we're going to go ahead and get it cooked up and we're going to get this started [Music] the first thing we're going to do is go ahead and get our chicken boiling this takes about 30 minutes i will be explaining to you guys why i am boiling the chicken breast so stay tuned to that but then we're gonna go ahead and chop up all of our vegetables so i wanted to do some celery some carrots some green beans and i've talked about this in other homemade dog food videos but
you can also buy your vegetables already chopped up that saves a lot of time you can also buy them frozen i do that all the time but i have these fresh in the fridge so we're going to go ahead and utilize them and get them all chopped up i am doing three pounds of meat and three cups of each vegetable [Music] [Music] i also wanted to encourage you guys to check online see some foods that dogs can have i love downloading free resources my veterinarian provide me with a ton but i also love downloading some
i love looking up what dogs can eat so there's a whole list of vegetables they can eat meats they can eat and you can really get creative with these recipes once you know what dogs are allowed to eat [Music] okay guys we have all the veggies chopped up i'm also cooking the chicken in the back so i know what you guys are probably wondering why don't i just cook the chicken in the instant pot so i really wanted to do a homemade dog food recipe that utilizes chicken and a way you can do that is
you can also use ground chicken as well but i was finding ground chicken so hard to find you guys and when i would find it it would be like six dollars a pound which is crazy so that's why i decided to use chicken breasts i did plan to make the chicken breasts in the instant pot but i couldn't get it right where the veggies and the rice cooked perfectly so what i do is i cook my chicken i boil it for about 30 minutes i shred it and then when this mixture is all done i
will add the chicken but if you want to avoid the extra step you can definitely add ground turkey you can add ground chicken and if you're going to add ground beef do a very lean one so that way it's not greasy when you cook everything and then you can just add everything in like i usually do my homemade dog food videos but we're gonna do things a little different my dogs seriously love the chicken you guys i think this is their favorite recipe yet i know i say that about everyone but they love the chicken
so i'm going to keep boiling the chicken shredding it and adding it in you guys will see how i add it in once we get this going so the first thing you're going to do is we're going to be adding about three tablespoons of coconut oil coconut oil has amazing benefits for your dog it's going to give them that healthy coat okay so i have three tablespoons of coconut oil added in my instant pot i'm gonna go ahead and add the veggie so the number one question you guys ask me all the time is can
you scale down the recipe absolutely i did three cups of each vegetable and three pounds of meat so if you wanted to just make one of the like one batch of this you could do one pound of meat and one cup of the veggies i like doing a large batch this batch that i'm making today will last my dogs about a week so i love essentially tripling it i do have a 10 quart instant pot i will have it linked down below they sell out like crazy you guys they always have the six and eight
cord available but the tin court is really hard to come by so if you see it buy it because it always sells out all right so i'm gonna add three cups of celery in here i'm going to add three cups of carrots and i'm also going to add three cups of some fresh green beans you can do fresh veggies you can do frozen veggies whatever is best for you this is all fresh but sometimes if i need to save some time i'll just buy a bag of like frozen carrots frozen green beans and that saves
a lot of time i also have some organ meat right here and this has amazing benefits for your dog definitely look it up it's worth adding you can get this from i get mine from walmart publix like really any grocery store so i did about one third a cup of some beef organs so i'm just going to dump that right in the next thing i'm going to be adding is pumpkin puree i love adding pumpkin puree or apple apple's a great source of fiber as well the pumpkin puree provides an amazing source of fiber for
your dog and it makes their stool perfect you guys whenever i give my dog's pumpkin puree their stool is like perfect it really helps digest it's just amazing if you want a solid stool so i always make sure to add in some pumpkin puree this is a half a can of some pumpkin puree next thing we're gonna add is our brown rice now you can add sweet potatoes you can add brown rice you can add quinoa one thing i recommend doing is doing your own research online and finding carbs that your dog can have and
also vegetables and proteins they can have that way if your dog doesn't like carrots you can sub it out for another vegetable or if your dog doesn't like brown rice you can sub it out for another carb one of my other favorite carbs is you can do white rice you can do quinoa you can do like a whole wheat pasta is great as well so i'm going to go ahead and wash this brown rice it just really helps with your digestion when you give them washed rice so i'm going to go ahead and wash it
and we'll be right back so for this recipe you want about six cups of cooked brown rice so if you are doing this separately you want to make sure you have about six cups cooked i have found that two and a half of uncooked rice makes six cups cooked um so that's what i am going to be doing so i have two and a half of uncooked rice i'm gonna go ahead and rinse it now that i have it rinsed i'm gonna go ahead and add it straight into the instant pot something else that i've
started adding in their homemade dog food is egg it provides an amazing source of protein my dogs love egg so that is a great way to give them some extra protein i'm going to go ahead and crack it straight in the instant pot you can also save these shells if you have a coffee grinder you can grind them up once you bake them and you can make your own calcium which i've done before i bought my calcium this time around if i want to make it homemade you can make it at home so i'm going
to crack two eggs in here all right so now that we have all the ingredients that we need obviously we're going to be adding the chicken when that is done i'm going to go ahead and add about four cups of water usually i only add about two but since we're not cooking our protein blessing is running around here since i'm not cooking my protein like if i was adding ground turkey i would only add two cups of water because the turkey releases a lot of like natural juices which helps cook the veggies and the rice
mainly the rice needs to be like somewhat covered i'm going to share it with you guys how it looks in a second i'm just mixing everything together because you don't want your dogs to have crunchy vegetables or rice so i'm just giving this a good mix and something that you guys know from my last homemade dog food i love adding turmeric it has amazing benefits for dogs i highly recommend doing some research and seriously looking up some good like super foods you can add into your dog's homemade dog food you can look into some veggies
that are great for dogs some carbs so that way you know you can make this recipe perfect for your dog in case they don't like any of this so i'm going to give it a good mix i added about two teaspoons of some turmeric all right so this is how the homemade dog food's gonna look before we pressure cook it you can see that the rice is completely covered that's what you want so that way you don't have crunchy rice and a lot of this liquid is going to go away you'll see when we pressure
cook it so this is great now i get a lot of questions about can you add bone broth bone broth is amazing for dogs the issue with that is a lot of bone broth contains onion and onion is toxic to dogs so if you can find a bone broth that has clean ingredients no onion or anything that dogs are allergic to you don't want any salt or onion in your bone broth if you can find a good one definitely add it i just love adding water because i don't have to worry about it so we're
going to go ahead and put the lid on the instant pot all right so we have my instant pot here i'm going to go ahead and hit the pressure cook button on my instant pot and then this recipe since we're not cooking any meat into this recipe it only takes 15 minutes if you're going to be adding ground turkey or ground chicken to this you definitely want to set it for probably about 25-30 minutes so it's going to go ahead and set for 15 minutes it's going to fully heat up and then it will start
the countdown on this timer you want to make sure it's on ceiling if you have that option your instant pot mines automatically does it when i hit pressure cook but if you have the little knob that says sealing you definitely want to go ahead and rotate that there [Music] are you ready to make your homemade dog fam it's all done baby girl are you ready tell them you're ready good girl get girl get girls all right so the instant pot has finished cooking i went ahead and let it do a natural release so there's no
steam left in here so i'm gonna go ahead and open it up all right so i'm gonna go ahead and give this a good mix there still is a little liquid in here which is okay because when we add the chicken it will really absorb just mixing it very well the rice looks nice and tender and cooked now i'm gonna go ahead and add this chicken that we shredded this is three pounds of shredded chicken add that in here get all of that chicken for blissy girl right lucy and i'm gonna go ahead and just
mix it all together okay guys i have the recipe here we went ahead and stirred everything i cooked it for 15 minutes i let the pressure the steam naturally release and the rice was still slightly crunchy which it's never been like that for me i always do 15 minutes for this recipe so what i did was i added about a cup of liquid and i cooked it for additional five minutes and let it do another natural release and now it's perfect so i'm gonna go ahead and put in the description box to cook this recipe
for 20 minutes i must have added a little bit more brown rice when i was measuring it um because usually 15 minutes is perfect so i would say about 15 to 20 minutes in the pressure cooker because you want the rice to be nice and soft so that way your dogs can digest it very easily you don't want crunchy rice so you could also if you notice your rice is crunchy you can add about a cup of liquid and you can saute it for about five minutes just until that rice gets soft so that's what
you want to make sure that your veggies are soft and also your rice is soft as well all right so the food is cooling we're going to be adding the calcium in just a second i talked to you guys about supplements in all of my homemade dog food videos and i wanted to talk quickly about it in this video in case you didn't see the other episodes so what i add in addition to my homemade dog food this was recommended by our dog's veterinarian it's my dogs do get a multivitamin i will link this one
down below i do not pre-mix it in the batch because blitzy girl and bentley get different serving sizes it goes based on weight so this was recommended for my veterinarian and just added in their breakfast serving so that's what i've been doing and it works great for them it's like a powder form and you'll know how much to add in their homemade dog food when you read the back of the jar it tells you exactly how much to add so this is something that my veterinarian said you definitely should add if you're going to cook
for your dogs and then another supplement that she recommended is calcium calcium dogs need so definitely make sure you add the calcium in this goes based off of how many cups of homemade dog food you're making so i'll be sharing with you how much i add for this recipe but you can definitely figure out how much to add and follow directions on the back the next two supplements i add are kind of like additives you don't have to add these although they were recommended to me by my veterinarian this one is a joint health i
need to add some more it comes in like treat form um and i don't give it to the dog to street form because they won't take it i will just kind of crumble it in their food and this tells you on the back of the jar how much to add based on how much weight your dog is my veterinarian pretty much recommended the joint health as a preventative maintenance so that way your dogs don't have joint health as they age but if your dogs already have joint health this is a great way to kind of
help that but i'm giving it to my dogs to prevent any joint problems so that's why i add it i will make sure to link this one below and then the next one she recommended as an additive now this is optional this is a probiotic i don't add this one very often because i do give my dogs greek yogurt i give them no sugar added just plain greek yogurt and that is a great way to give your dogs the probiotics they need to keep their digestive system running great their immune system running great probiotic is
great but if you want to give your dog greek yogurt you can give like a tablespoon on top of their homemade dog food i like to add greek yogurt to their lick pads but whenever i don't give them greek yogurt i will just add this to their food again this tells you exactly how much to add based on how much weight your dog is so all of these will be linked down below for you guys if you get any two definitely get the multivitamin in the calcium and then the other two are just bonuses okay
so the veggies are all soft the rice is nice and tender you can wait for this to fully cool down but you don't have to to add the calcium so this recipe makes about 20 cups of food this is about a week's supply for my two dogs i love cooking this amount you can freeze it so if you just have one dog i still recommend cooking this amount you can pop it in the freezer it lasts in the freezer for three to six months you guys so you can pull it out the freezer the night
before and you have it i only store a three to four day supply in my fridge i wouldn't store this in the fridge longer than four days so keep that in mind i will store four days in the fridge and then freeze the rest so for this recipe it makes about 20 cups i'm going to be adding five teaspoons of calcium and it tells you exactly how much to add on the back of the bottle so if you're making less food obviously you wouldn't need to add five teaspoons so now that i have the calcium
added i am just mixing everything together now if you're just feeding one dog you can go ahead and add their multivitamin and you can figure out how much they need for this batch which is about 20 cups since my dogs need different amounts it wouldn't be beneficial for me to go ahead and pre-mix and since they need different amounts of joint health it just wouldn't make sense to pre-mix in a question i still get asked all the time is do i heat this up for my dogs no my dogs love this recipe straight out the
fridge so they do great but if you want to heat it up you definitely can alright so now that i have the calcium added in i'm gonna go ahead and start storing this in storage containers um i do have like a little heating plate at the bottom so i don't ruin my countertops that's still hot now if you are using plastic containers you definitely want to wait for this fully to come to room temperature before you add the food in since this is glass i'm going to go ahead and add it in i'm not going
to shut the top until it comes to room temperature you see your homemade toffee fleecy girl when it cools down mama will give you some okay when it cools down you get some she is here she's ready for homemade dog food all right so i have their homemade dog food in containers i'm gonna wait to fill this up i did save some in the instant pot so that way they can have a little appetizer it's like not quite dinner time for them to eat dinner around like 6 30 and it's only 4 30 so i'm
just gonna give them a little bit so you guys can see how much they love the recipe but i'm gonna let it completely cool down and then we will let the dogs have a little appetizer look at bentley you look at him he's all ready so this is just their appetizer they're going to be eating dinner in about two hours so i just wanted to give them it's not much but just a little bit you ready girl you ready tell me you're ready sit down stay good boy he doesn't like his on his raised bowl
he likes it now he's in the down position stay eat good boy he loves that homemade dog food you like mama's recipe lucy she loves it you guys good girl you love mama's cooking they love the chicken you guys i think chicken's like their favorite protein so it's worth doing the extra sep they love it good boy she loves it i will also make sure to link the slow bowls down below bentley doesn't really need the slow bowl to be honest he could be perfectly fine in his normal bowl but blissey needs it if she
doesn't have it she'll eat too fast causing herself to have gas and throw up so since she has had the slow ball we haven't had any issues bentley just really has one because she has one um but he eats pretty slow so it hasn't been a problem but if you notice your dog eats super fast definitely recommend this bitly cleaned his bowl of the homemade dog food you guys he ate he goes straight to his bed you have the food kuma look at that belly look at that belly you are nice and full it's almost
dinner time all right lizzy i think it's all gone baby girl you ate everything good job good girl come here tell everyone bye she's going back for more she thinks it's dinner time you'll get your full serving soon okay can you tell everyone bye blissy girl bentley can you tell everyone bye can you guys tell them bye come on bentley you can come on thank you guys so much for watching i'll have the recipe typed out below for you guys so definitely make sure to check out the description box and i'll see you guys very
soon with a brand new video bye [Music]
